What is true of the most informative, insightful, and interesting posts on hacker news, but is also true of the laziest most worthless posts? They're both flagged, to keep you from seeing them.

andrewclunn··on Who Would Choose Socialism?
Is Reason low key admitting that socialism can work, but only if there is ethnic homogeneity and ideological / religious unity? Somewhere between the "Socialism never works!" and the "Real Communism has never been tried!" flame war, the "What about national socialism?" question invariably emerges. Then everyone flees because the right wing doesn't want to be associated with Nazis, and the left wing doesn't want to admit what functioning socialism actually entails.

Is my post bashing Reason and the selective memory of the right, conflating all socialists (and modern Israel) with the Nazis, or advocacy / apologism for national socialism? Well that all depends on your own bias as you read it.

andrewclunn··on Gender inequality is associated with differences in the brains of women and men
Reversing causality to try and turn evidence against pure egalitarianism into a pseudo-scientific argument for oppression narrative based political views IS controversial. It just doesn't appear to be to people mired in neo-marxist culture (see the large swatch of Californian natives that frequent this site).
andrewclunn··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
So when Western companies create "woke" chatbots it's cool. But if other AI are created reflecting different cultural values... Sounds like some people are pissed that their "tools of education" become other groups' "tools of misinformation and oppression." The internet cannot be so easily colonized.

In the open market of ideas ones you do not agree with will be expressed: whether it be by earnest informed individuals, paid spammers, trolls, state media, corporate media, some guy with a webcam in a basement, or now AI chatbots.

There will be a PETA bot soon that goes around trying to "convert" people to veganism, and a slew of "evangalism" bots and the like for various faiths. I look forward to the Zionist AI vs "Hitler-did-nothing-wrong" bot debate of 2032, as well as the Secular-Hivemind vs "God is real, and we should kill him" Satanism A.I. opener. Just let me grab my 3D virtual popcorn simulator first.

andrewclunn··on Searches for VPN Soar in Utah Amidst Pornhub Blockage
Conversely, one could set their VPN to Utah as a quick child protective measure
andrewclunn··on “All Tomorrow’s Parties”: AI Synthesis – The End of Copyright as We Knew It
Well this certainly makes it clear why AI generated content can't be copyrighted: it's basically created using IP theft already.
andrewclunn··on Brain activity of dying people shows signs of near-death experiences
People who die traumatically don't remember the event because their last back-up is a few hours old.
andrewclunn··on Long before trees overtook the land, Earth was covered by prototaxites (2013)
Then the dinosaur king named Bowser conquered this Mushroom kingdom, until a time travelling plumber...
andrewclunn··on Ask HN: Are we becoming more misanthropic?
The cure for bigotry is misanthropy. Once you hate everyone in general, there's little reason to hate any particular sort of person specifically.
andrewclunn··on Elon Musk Creates New Artificial Intelligence Company X.ai
Wait, didn't Elon JUST SAY that we needed to put a halt on AI development?
andrewclunn··on The Dangerous Rise of Front Yard Polticics
I respect the people who actually volunteer. I also can respect when people are honest about the limitations of their own compassion. However, both are costly (the first in terms of time and second in terms of social cost). Claiming to care for others, while doing nothing for them, is the most selfish approach.

It's (frankly) the difference between Democrats from 20 years ago versus today. Policy disagreements aside, I believed the rank and file Democrat legitimately wanted to help and cared about the poor. It's now become a wasteland of grifting and virtue signaling. People are up in arms about Trump and the populous revolution on the right, but damn it if the left doesn't need one and badly.

andrewclunn··on World's largest banknote printer says printing money isn't profitable anymore
It is a way to avoid paying fees on every single transaction, and keeps your purchases from being tracked.
andrewclunn··on Meme group on Discord is focus of uproar over leaked Pentagon documents
Anthropomorphic furry porn is right wing now? I think there are some people for whom "offensive to me," "offensive to others, and "right wing" are equivalent terms. All your post does is prove that you fall into that category. Live Leak death videos and racist jokes are no more "right wing" than pedophilia is "left wing" (which is to say that it isn't).

Now some people break down racism in some weird way where bigotry towards Africans or Hispanics is "right wing" and bigotry toward Caucasians and Asians is "left wing," but those people are laughable in their tribalistic thinking and weird politicization of everything.

andrewclunn··on They’re selling nudes of imaginary women on Reddit
This was the obvious next step to anyone paying attention. I refer to my earlier comment on a recent thread regarding AI:

andrewclunn··on AI Can't Take over Everyone's Jobs Soon (If Ever)
This is when things like 4 day work weeks and expanded vacation time via regulation actually make sense. We've become so much more efficient? Reduce the amount of work allowed to achieve full time employment to force the efficiency into more leisure time. Of course, the conundrum there becomes outsourcing and nations being incentivized not to do so to build their economies. We may be trapped in a tragedy of the commons leading us to slavery.
andrewclunn··on AI Can't Take over Everyone's Jobs Soon (If Ever)
These are all valid criticisms of AI in its current state, but nobody (and I mean NOBODY) thinks AI is done improving.
andrewclunn··on Walmart to add EV charging to thousands of stores by 2030
I have seen the people who get EVs. I have seen the people who shop at Walmart. These people are not the same.
andrewclunn··on The Pornography Paradox
Fair, but I see that as just an evolution of porn, in the same way that daily pills, hormonal inserts, and the morning after pill are separate technologies, but ultimately all means of "birth control."
andrewclunn··on Becky Is Depressed
Everyone is fat. Traditionally male models of success are being pushed on girls. Boys are backlashing against feminism hard. People aren't growing up in stable homes with both parents around and single mothers are WAY more likely to medicate their kids into submission via medical diagnosis.
andrewclunn··on Game Over: Steam won’t Run on Windows 7 and 8 after January 2024
Good thing we have proton. That's doing for PC gaming what emulators did for console preservation.
andrewclunn··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
True, but that's never how they market it.
andrewclunn··on Extinction of Steam Locomotives Derails Assumptions about Biological Evolution
Invasive species have already shown this to be the case. I swear sometimes academics think something can't be "true" or "known" until there's a paper written about it with a new term to signify the phenomena.
andrewclunn··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
So "beating China" is used to justify becoming China... well shit.
andrewclunn··on Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default
In 5 years I predict an arch based SteamOS derivative will be the most common desktop linux for personal users. It will have the backing of solid engineering form a company that couldn't care less about being opinionated regarding the desktop user space.
andrewclunn··on Italy moves to ban lab-grown meat to protect food heritage
A nation that has a huge investment in food production establishes protectionist policies to secure those industries in the name of protecting its culture and its people's livelihood. Whether people on "the left" or "the right" agree or disagree comes down to the industry in question and never has anything to do with principle. Hypocrites all the way down.
andrewclunn··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
Invisibilia was just a rip off of 99% Invisible with female hosts. No real loss there.
andrewclunn··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
Naw. Stupid people are only happy until they face the consequences of their stupidity. I'll take being right and derive my happiness elsewhere because internet validation is a chump's game.
andrewclunn··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
Survivorship bias. All the babies allergic to peanut butter, but fed it early, died.
andrewclunn··on Toxic fumes on airplanes? Airlines may have to do something about it
New warning sign, "Please do not fart on the air censors" inbound in 3... 2...
andrewclunn··on Khan Academy integrates GPT-4 as every student’s customized tutor
It will start with the "areas we can all agree on" and then scope creep will occur. This is the safest prediction I feel I've ever made.
andrewclunn··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
I support this. High density housing destroys property values by enabling poor people to move in, and results in higher crime. NIMBYism works. Keep the immigrants, criminals, and homeless centralized I'm the dystopian cities and the rest of the state can survive. The point is to pretend you care about the poor and the environment while really just using these as covers for your own self interest. Then just demonize those who oppose said policies as bigots or uneducated. Works every time.
