andrewclunn··on Stop Obsessing Over Comments On Hacker News (2015)
Yes, but you made the mistake of attempting to be witty, so now you must be downvoted into oblivion!
andrewclunn··on Stop Obsessing Over Comments On Hacker News (2015)
Hey thanks!
andrewclunn··on Stop Obsessing Over Comments On Hacker News (2015)
Hasn't this been posted here before? Anyone have a link to the comments on that posting?
andrewclunn··on How Does Your Kindergarten Classroom Affect Your Earnings?
I am wary that these nature versus nurture studies will always find some way in which purchasing or investing in additional or more expensive schooling is key. That is until such time as genetic engineering become consumer available, then I imagine a slew of studies proving that people with x heritable trait succeed. Of course, I'm a father with a 1 and a half year old already in Montesory school because despite my wariness that it's all just marketing pretending at science, I can't not want to give me daughter every advantage I can. They've got me over a barrel!
andrewclunn··on When You Fall in Love, This Is What Facebook Sees (2014)
What about private messages? I mean we know Facebook tracks those too. Do they just not want to admit as much publicly?
andrewclunn··on Atom-in-orbit: Putting Atom in the browser
But can we use it to code a version of chromium that runs on electron?
andrewclunn··on BBC admits its viral “women write better code” story was fake news
The post linked goes into depth as to why this retraction is too little too late. Having no filter process that prevents obvious click bait nonsense, with a retraction a year later is not worth praising. Best to internalize some skepticism about all "news" and question studies "especially of the gray science variety." Being bothered because it's easy to label outlets with biases you don't like, while forgiving those you do, is just human nature, and I'd wager at the root of why my comment keeps fluctuating wildly as to its rating.
andrewclunn··on BBC admits its viral “women write better code” story was fake news
There's no such thing as an objective source. Advertisement, journalism, propaganda... they all blend together. It really shouldn't be shocking that so many are retreating into their own echo chambers. What's the point of trying to find a reputable source of news, when none of them are?
andrewclunn··on Child uses sleeping mom's thumbprint to buy $250 worth of Pokémon toys
Sounds like an excellent potential recruit for Team Rocket!
andrewclunn··on New holiday report shows Apple leading phone activations
I'm seeing a trend among my own social group and family (so warning anecdotal evidence). Everyone seems to start with Android as their first smart phone, but as they gain upward mobility economically they switch to iPhones, and then the more people around them who have iPhones the more they want to switch.

EDIT -

Could be how annoying it is to get those iMessage group messages on a non-iPhone phone.

andrewclunn··on TV is bricked by Android malware and LG wont disclose factory reset
Does anyone have a non smart tv model they can recommend? Preferably with a ~50 inch model available?
andrewclunn··on Tesla Auto-Pilot Predicts an impending accident a second early
Elon Musk openly shares when things go wrong, so no reason not to give credit when things go right. Still a horribly scary accident.
andrewclunn··on Ask HN: What if we legalize cybercrime?
Odd that google.com now redirects me to bing.com when I use Microsoft Edge... Ah, another Facebook blackmail notice, need to remember to send them their monthly $20, so they don't tell my significant other about my affair... Somebody left a phone on the ground, oh damn it, it just scanned my fingerprint and is breaking into my bank account, serves me right, I should have known better than to go outside today.

Yeah, I'm not digging this dystopian future. On the plus side, it would bring typewriters back into common use.

andrewclunn··on Police seek Amazon Echo data in murder case
"Alexa, who is the murderer?"

"I'm sorry, I can't find the answer to the question you asked."

andrewclunn··on I Can Tolerate Anything Except the Outgroup (2014)
It builds to honest self reflection on tribalism in a way very few articles do well. It's worth the full read. Of course, I'm not team Blue, so I might be biased. There's lots that it makes me think about regarding my own reactions to liberalism (is team Grey just doing to team Blue what they did to team Red?)...

Worth the whole read. I am inspired to write up a list of the five worst traits of my own ideological in group (which I will go with libertarians not because it's a great fit, but because it's the closest I've got), just to make myself face them honestly instead of pretending like I'm being self critical when I criticise the liberal attitudes of the community in which I live (there's not the critical mass for team Grey to really achieve that level of isolation).

andrewclunn··on [dead]
Yes yes, I got that. But (looking at user rahrahrah's post) clearly not everyone did. Thank you, we have now over explained the joke to a level that all humor has been sucked out of the room.
andrewclunn··on [dead]
For the briefest of moments I questioned whether this was a parody or not.
andrewclunn··on The real secret to Asian American success was not education
So being forced to open their own businesses due to lack of employment (because of racism) gives credibility to the notion that declining racism is what lead to Asian American upward mobility? I suppose Jewish bankers and merchants, forced into those positions (which were at the time looked down upon) were also beneficiaries of declining racism...

This article is a clear example of why so many dismiss the grey sciences as ideology masquerading as science.

andrewclunn··on A movie that doesn’t exist and the Redditors who think it does
MGM should cast Sinbad in a movie titled "Shazaam! 2" just to really fuck with people.
andrewclunn··on Bill seeks to put porn block on computers sold in SC
Is it horrible of me to hope that this means that popular porn sites will soon harass users from South Carolina, telling them to try Linux?
andrewclunn··on Depressed children respond differently to rewards than other kids
Mrs. Berry was then left with the unpleasant realization that either her entire class was depressed, or scratch and sniff stickers were no longer cool.
andrewclunn··on NSA Watchdog Removed for Whistleblower Retaliation
Seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't type of situation. One wonders if the guy's job description basically contained, "Stop leaks of NSA overreach, while advocating for those who have concerns about NSA overreach."
andrewclunn··on The Talk
On the scale of, "Scientists keep their discoveries hidden," to, "Overly simplified explanations abound in order to 'popularize' science," we've definitely gone too far the other way. Of course the only remedy then is more precise explanation. Favorited.
andrewclunn··on One More Sign World Is Shrinking – eBay Is for Suckers
Okay... So how is this evidence that the world is small?
andrewclunn··on Are We Really Worse Off Than Our Parents?
Picking appliances as the example is a bit of selection bias. Food and housing are the real costs.
andrewclunn··on Google has reportedly stopped developing its own self-driving car
See, "Everything other than the highway is really hard, and Tesla already beat us all to market there."
andrewclunn··on Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person
Wouldn't this bring up one very glaring reason not to marry someone though? They have a completely unrealistic view of marriage.
andrewclunn··on I am not a self-made man
"To make apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe." - Carl Sagan
andrewclunn··on On Getting Older in Tech
Get a job in an industry that uses tech, but isn't itself pure tech (healthcare IT for example). Then your years of domain experience matter.
andrewclunn··on Why I Believe Scratch Is the Future of Programming
I get that scratch doesn't require that a child can read or type yet, but really, shouldn't those be fundamentals that they learn first anyways?
