andrewclunn··on The jobs that really smart people avoid
Sneaking suspicion that it's the legacy students (see got in on daddy's money) students who go into finance.
andrewclunn··on Why Is Obama Expanding Surveillance Powers Right Before He Leaves Office?
In other news The Atlantic asks, "Was Obama's mishandling of Syria just a plan to discourage his successor from foreign intervention?"
andrewclunn··on What Romance Really Means After 10 Years of Marriage
Yeah. This is great for those seeking contentment alone. A lot of it struck me as making excuses for letting herself go. I realize that my wife and I have a much more "power couple" style deal. Of course it's going to vary from couple to couple. Perhaps there should be a browser extension that just inserts "to me" or "in my opinion" after declarative sentences.
andrewclunn··on The Case for Ubuntu Phone
PCs have interchangeable components that are built around standards. So if it's easier to write for them in an abstracted way. Vendors control the hardware for their phones. They have no interest in enabling people to remove their Android flavor, with built in crapware. Open source phone OSes will come, but only after we've reduced the smart phone to a commodity and market forces have compelled standardization through economy of scale.
andrewclunn··on Why President Obama Can't Pardon Edward Snowden
Not convincing. Really tried to read with an open mind, but there was literally no new info here, just a narrative spin.
andrewclunn··on We changed our apply page to no longer allow students from windows
Developer, and long time BSD user who has dabbled in linux. I keep trying to get away from Windows, but it keeps being something I have to use for work. So many businesses use C# and Microsoft SQL Server for their back ends, and IE 11 support is the bane of my existence for web development. Maybe it's different in southern California, but everywhere else Windows is still king.

So a game that is alluding to an act is now outrageous? If the women were pressured into it, sure, but seems like more outraged internet citizens of the West snap judgment to me. The shaming of the women for apparently allowing themselves to be shamed is the most hypothetical stance.
andrewclunn··on Hey guys What do you guys think of this website me and my friend made?
So many videos at once made me think it was broken on my tablet at first.
andrewclunn··on Integrating GTA V into Universe
Don't you want your self driving car to be able to get away from the cops?
andrewclunn··on America’s Fastest-Growing Loan Category Has Eerie Echoes of Subprime Crisis
I am incentivized via the tax code to put money into a 401k, which I can take out early only as a down payment to purchase a home, and rent costs more than monthly mortgage payments, especially with the tax breaks for having one. How am I not being pushed to put my money in investment banks or a home?
andrewclunn··on Backpage Shuts Down Adult Ads in the U.S., Citing Government Pressure
The best argument for legalizing prostitution is because then it will allow for a separation of it and child sex trafficing, effectively undercutting the black market while preventing those unscrupulous enough to promote it from hiding behind the purposefully vague adult escort services.
andrewclunn··on Google discontinues support for hangouts API
The Angular 1 / 2 situation is a great example. The Rust over Go is some advice based on the lesson learned.
andrewclunn··on When You Are Depressed, Make Something
When selecting the thing to make, please avoid the child option. Making a kid to cure your depression is not a good idea.
andrewclunn··on Google discontinues support for hangouts API
Learn Rust instead of Go. Choose React over Angular.
andrewclunn··on Google discontinues support for hangouts API
Google abandoning a platform or dropping support for an API is hardly even news. They do this constantly. It's a hard lesson we developers should always keep in mind when selecting a platform, language, or toolkit.
andrewclunn··on Upping the Ante: Top Poker Pros Face Off vs. Artificial Intelligence
Oh, so playing online with access to statistical tools and analysis, so really the computer advantage for knowing the odds is completely nil. It's really only then competing in the strategy element... very interesting indeed.
andrewclunn··on Software Developers Should Have Sysadmin Experience
Yes, yes. We get it, we should know all things, keep up with all the latest rends, work 80+ hours every week, and do our company's IT support on the side for free while we code their software. Or companies could compensate us for our time and hire more god damn people if they need it. You know, just saying.
andrewclunn··on [dead]
Sort of doubting the veracity of this, but at the same time really wanting it to be true.
andrewclunn··on AdNauseam Banned from the Google Web Store
Hello Firefox and Opera. I'm suddenly in the market for a new browser.
andrewclunn··on Rumors of Cmd’s death have been greatly exaggerated
Because it's a comment that asks a question based on actually reading the linked article, and this is hacker news.
andrewclunn··on Rumors of Cmd’s death have been greatly exaggerated
> Cmd is one of the most frequently run executables on Windows with a similar number of daily launches as File Explorer, Edge and Internet Explorer!

Wait, they track that?

andrewclunn··on Inkscape Version 0.92 is Released
Is it still only 32 bit? The 4 gig ram limitation made some complex processes much slower than they needed to be.
andrewclunn··on Russian government hackers do not appear to have targeted Vermont utility
Thanks for the information. I guess my complaints are regarding the users rather than the moderation then. I did not realize that users had that much power.
andrewclunn··on Russian government hackers do not appear to have targeted Vermont utility
Yet the retraction made earlier was flagged. Moderation on hacker news, gotta love it. Now quick down vote me!
andrewclunn··on How a Machine Learns Prejudice
Most significant variable. If green is a proxy for poor, which is in turn a proxy for risky mortgage loan, then the poor variable is the better point of discrimination.
andrewclunn··on Forget Survival of the Fittest: It Is Kindness That Counts (2009)
But if you can convince people that there's just one simple way to be (instead of reacting to the situation at hand) then you can sell more self help books / appeal to a simplistic view of emotions where some are 'positive' and others 'negative.'
andrewclunn··on How a Machine Learns Prejudice
There seems to be a bit of explaining away all bias as the result of human creators here. If an algorithm trained on real world data displayed some traditional bias, would we assume such a cause and dismiss it? One could just as easily make this argument to dismiss all correlation based evidence. Yes the code / methodology matters, but we'd best get ready for deep learning algorithms to confront us with some uncomfortable truths.
andrewclunn··on [dead]
Yet another article that conflates "protecting user" with wanting censorship of people who are on the right politically. Same with the fake news, and all wrapped up in any anti corporation narrative. Yawn.
andrewclunn··on [dead]
So... fake news? Or do we subjectively only apply that to right wing outlets, since that was the intention of the propagandists pushing the concept and blaming Russia to cast their political opponents as traitors?
andrewclunn··on [dead]
Hmmm, I wonder why this particular ban is news worthy for the Guardian...
