andreasley··on About the security content of macOS Tahoe 26.6
The bug that led to network connection issues after 49 days of uninterrupted uptime was a bit of a showstopper for me.
andreasley··on Apple to skip high-end M6 Mac chips in favor of AI-focused M7 line
I'd even buy a M4 Ultra....
andreasley··on Show HN: CSS Studio. Design by hand, code by agent
Unfortunately, that video does not explain anything at all. I now know that the product can be used with a mouse, that I can select things and set some properties. Who is it for? What does it do? Why should I use it?
andreasley··on Sweden's Digital ID System Hacked, Public's Data Sold on Dark Web
I recommend you don't rely on it; while it may be news, it's rarely truths.
andreasley··on Sweden's Digital ID System Hacked, Public's Data Sold on Dark Web
Note that voicemedia.global is part of a Russian Propaganda network. Here's a report detailing how it works: https://www.gmfus.org/sites/default/files/2024-05/Laundromat...
andreasley··on Zero-day CSS: CVE-2026-2441 exists in the wild
Here's one: https://github.com/huseyinstif/CVE-2026-2441-PoC
andreasley··on Apple Graveyard – Products that it killed
Especially since the generated images have almost nothing in common with the actual products.
andreasley··on Password manager should support OS X Keychain (2001)
I've posted about this a few years ago, but there was barely any response.

In my opinion, this insecurity by default is reason enough not to recommend Firefox.

andreasley··on The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer
The service is run by a French non‑profit organization, not the EU.
andreasley··on New Mac Mini with M4
Why would you prefer an external power brick?

The internal power supplies in Mac minis have been extremely reliable and the fewer cables the better, in my opinion.

andreasley··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
I was wondering the same thing.

There might be other explanations than a cyberattack though. The pagers could have been prepared in some way before distribution.

From the videos, it looks like the explosions were quite sudden and remarkably violent for such a small device.

So in addition to people-hunting FPV drones, we now have the equivalent of exploding collars from science fiction movies like Running Man. I don't like where we're heading, but it was probably inevitable that technology would be used this way.

andreasley··on SpaceX Polaris Dawn crew attempts first private spacewalk [video]
Better quality (1080p with proper audio): https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1OyJAZnwZqLxb

Unfortunately, this requires being logged into X.

I also really wish there was a 4K stream or recording for these amazing events.

andreasley··on Show HN: Repaint – a WebGL based website builder
I noticed the same thing. For some reason, the video (player?) defaults to 1.2x speed. You can change it in the video controls at the bottom.
andreasley··on Ask HN: How do you currently document ideas you come up with?
A text file.
andreasley··on Ask HN: How many battery cycles on your MacBook?

    Cycle Count: 68
    Condition: Normal
    Maximum Capacity: 98%
andreasley··on Politicians fall sick after drinking raw milk to celebrate legalising raw milk (2016)
Actually, the sale of raw milk in West Virginia will become legal in June 2024.

More details: https://wvpublic.org/raw-milk-sales-legal-in-w-va-as-avian-f...

andreasley··on German intelligence: Putin plans to attack NATO in 2026
Editorialized title. The article says that Russia is increasing arms production, aiming to double their military power. With that, an attack on NATO can _not be ruled out completely_.
andreasley··on [dead]
Crypto scam, actually. Very well done though!

Fake AI voice of Elon Musk, embedded QR code with SpaceX branding, redirect to https://spacex-starship.com.

85,000 people watching this fake channel (which has 369,000 subscribers for some reason). $30,000 in BTC already deposited and more rolling in every minute.

andreasley··on Speedometer 3.0: A shared browser benchmark for web application responsiveness
Another Mac Studio M1 with Safari 17.4:

  22.7 with Content Blocker
  28.7 without Content Blocker
andreasley··on Show HN: GPU Prices on eBay
Neat! I'd love to have to ability to sort by a column.
andreasley··on Amazon employee in Ontario collapses, dies after fire alarm sent staff into cold
The article says "-22" but does not specify if that's °C or °F. When (incorrectly) assuming that Canada is using the Farenheit scale like the U.S., this would convert to -30°C.
andreasley··on How to do OCR on a Mac using the CLI or just Python
macOS Ventura and newer actually have basic OCR functionality integrated into the Image Capture UI. When using an AirPrint-compatible scanner and scanning to PDF, the checkbox "OCR" is shown in the right pane.
andreasley··on My insulin pump controller has a bug
May be this pump/issue: https://www.tandemdiabetes.com/docs/default-source/legal/com...

However, the document states that "there is no defect identified in relation to the use of this product", which would contradict the Twitter post, so maybe it's a different product or either the poster or the document is wrong.

andreasley··on I think I need to go lie down
Note: This requires an OpenAI API key with access to the model 'gpt-4-vision-preview', so a paid subscription.
andreasley··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
For those wondering, the quoted text is from https://x.ai/legal/terms-of-service/
andreasley··on M3 Macs: there's more to performance than counting cores
For a while now, the lifespan of Apple devices has mostly been limited by Apple stopping to provide software updates. Most Macs from 20 years ago still work fine today. If some component died, it was usually the hard drive or the power supply in my experience.

Apple Silicon will definitely be the architecture best supported by Apple for the foreseeable future. There is no downside to it in terms or reliability or longevity.

andreasley··on How async/await works internally in Swift
Do you happen to have some links to information about the issues you mentioned?

Swift async/await has worked excellently for me so far. The biggest issue is that most libraries aren't updated to use it (and sometimes couldn't be, because they require Custom Actor Executors, which weren't available until Swift 5.9).

I found the following video helpful to better understand Swift async/await: "Swift concurrency: Behind the scenes" https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2021/10254

andreasley··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
Indeed! When "Display the time with seconds" is enabled for the menu bar clock, Control Center sits at 0.8% CPU activity instead of 0.0% on my Mac.
andreasley··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
Can't reproduce this on macOS Ventura 13.6 on a Mac Studio.
andreasley··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
Control Center is an overlay that is only shown when the appropriate icon in the menu bar is clicked. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/mchl50f94f8f/13.0/m...
