ancymon··on Things You Can’t Say About Assange or WikiLeaks
Overall such statement leaves bad taste. But pressure to be first or negligence makes media publish press releases without looking at them. Maybe starting it this way would make someone think about its content and not just put on their website?
ancymon··on Things You Can’t Say About Assange or WikiLeaks
Is it false and defamatory to suggest that WikiLeaks was a tool used to affect US election?
ancymon··on My favorite apps on F-Droid
The page you've linked says "This app is disabled and does not appear in the repo". So it's not really available at F-Droid. Do you know why?
ancymon··on Facebook announces Clear History feature
What about letting website owners to have like buttons which won't track users?
ancymon··on Ask HN: A way to manage many unique email addresses?
Catch-all is quite known for that. But the problem starts when you need to respond to some emails using such alias. You then need to setup account for sending which for me is quite inconvenient. Also in case of gmail the alias accounts "leak" the original login in some email headers.
ancymon··on Ask HN: A way to manage many unique email addresses?
More popular it gets, sooner people will remove everything after the plus for mailing purpose. Actually, that's quite strange my "spammers" aren't doing it yet.
ancymon··on Ask HN: Ultrabook for programming?
I didn't try it but lately I was thinking about the same thing. I came up with conclusion that I'll try to get myself the cheapest laptop and try to log in from it to some remote dev machine. I think renting for hours Amazon Workspaces: https://aws.amazon.com/workspaces/pricing/ and working from cheap laptop might be not a bad idea.
ancymon··on Launching Our Crowdfunding Campaign
Why not choose less US centric fundrising platform? There aren't any? For example I am missing choice of currency. If I were to donate in dollars I would have to pay bank twice for changing currency.
ancymon··on Should I really avoid OVH for production app?
I heard an advice that it's best to pay them on monthly basis. In that case when you encounter hardware problem you just buy a new VPS instead of dealing with support.
ancymon··on Ask HN: Why browsers don't verify cheksums of downloaded content?
I was thinking about something like that. But this proposition seems to be about checking integrity of page components like scripts and styles.
ancymon··on Google recruitment mistakes: part 3
I think it's kind of overreaction and a waste of time responding that way. What is he tring to prove by responding in that maner and publishing it on the blog?
ancymon··on LocationIQ — Free and Fast Geocoding Service
Are they are just running Nominatim? Is Nominatim reliable? Looking at Nominatim project on github it does not look like well maintained software (e.g. there is even pull request from 2012, issues with basic use cases)...
ancymon··on Show HN: Euro 2016 predictions using Bayesian inference
Where did you get player/club data from?
ancymon··on Ask HN: Which VPN do you use and why?
As I understand VPN providers make users share single IP. Doesn't it give some extra anonymity? For example if you create your own Droplet someone still can listen for your traffic (but not coming from your PC but from the Droplet) and you are quite easily identifiable (because you are only user).
ancymon··on How to Pass a Programming Interview
The company says: "We help programmers find great jobs at Y Combinator startups."

What's so great in Y Combinator startups? I mean why do they narrow only to such startups? Wouldn't it be better to just say they help with finding jobs in startups?

ancymon··on Microsoft reveals details of Windows 10 usage tracking
There's DisableWinTracking GitHub project [1]. Wouldn't installing this software solve problem for those who don't want to be tracked?

ancymon··on 0 A.D.: A free, open-source game of ancient warfare
It's current version is "0 A.D. Alpha 19 Syllepsis". Is it done and playable? Maybe it's better to wait for some "real" release?

By the way, it seems to me that open source games don't have visible milestones. So one cannot notice when there's a good moment to download and play bug free game. Do you have same impression?

ancymon··on OpenStreetMap is the Most Important thing in Geo
I've backed the statement that OSM contains errors by saying that there are duplicated addresses.

I've backed the statement that OSM is inconsistent by saying that sometimes streets in OSM contain full name and sometime only most important part (and that makes Nominatim unable to search for addresses).

ancymon··on OpenStreetMap is the Most Important thing in Geo
The flag OSM geocoder is Nominatim. It turns out it won't work if you provide only part of street name (if OSM contains full street name) or when you provide full name (if OSM contains only part of the name) [1]. So in my opinion searching for addresses is not reliable.

That's one thing, another is that addresses are quite often duplicated. There's no automatic check for that and such duplicates exist for years.

ancymon··on OpenStreetMap is the Most Important thing in Geo
From programmer's point of view working with OSM is quite annoying. OSM is being considered more as database than drawn map. But that database is inconsistent, contains many errors and its data structures are not good to represent non geographical items. On top of that mechanical edits of map are very discouraged. I think that OSM would only be good for simple stuff like showing on your website where's your business located. Anything more advanced like address searching or routing would never work reliably.
ancymon··on Show HN: AWS monitoring SaaS (application centric; automatic baselining)
Are you by chance the same Alois who's author at ruxit blog [1]? I don't mind that "user" scepticer submits stuff which only advertises ruxit, but at least let an honest discussion happen in comment section...

No, those seem to be IDEs in browsers. I'd like to have complete environment.

ancymon··on SomaFM: "We need to raise $410 by the end of the day."
From the support page, it looks like it costs $35000 per month to run the radio. To me it seems to be a lot.
