The percentage of their party apps, vs people using the first party app, just based on Google play downloads is very miniscule. It is like saying using youtube-dl to consume YouTube is killing it. I mean we all love sponsor block and uBlock origin, do we have the same sympathy for YouTube?
Sam Altman is on the board of Reddit, with all the peddling he is doing with US congress to limit other companies from building a "competitor", I think he is the one putting pressure on Reddit to stop API access, to hinder others.
I wouldn't even be surprised if that was true.
Ugh, u may not like the following but the devices you are using to get on the internet, are used to collect a treasure trove of information, to conduct information warfare.
And regardless of whatever your bullshit political specrum is.... this is a platform for stalking, propaganda, tracking and killing Human Beings.
Period.
Street Cred: I have common sense.
There is only one outcome: Defense spending, Military Death.
Used Lenovo think center I bought off eBay has, Intel 7th gen with vPro, 8GB ram, 256GB nvme, all of that for 76$ including shipping, pi can even beat that price.
Twitter, YouTube, Google, AWS, TikTok?
Or all the nerds posting screenshots to Twitter or posting screenshots of Twitter to HN and reddit, googling programming related stuff, using services deployed on AWS, and TikTok tech content creators not nerds?
Isn't Sam Altman on their board? I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who pushed for these API changes, to restrict others from building a competitor to OpenAI.
Some application in the future, that turns out to be AI? That is some level of hammering a square into a circle as I see it (confirmation bias?).
This quickly falls apart, since GitHub Copilot is also available as an extension on intelliJ, and is not exclusive to VsCode.
Vscode shines with or without GitHub Copilot, because it also has some other exclusive extension ecosystem that are not opensource but very much a bait to pull Linux devs into windows, their bet on WSL, and exclusive extensions like WSL integration and remote containers extension, literally shows how much they want developers to be in their ecosystem.
Vscode is their, bet itself to keep developers wrapped in their tentacles, OTOH Copilot is barely a feature, that allows them to charge subscribers, on multiple IDEs. Copilot is not an exclusive feature that brings devs into their ecosystem, it's just an addition.
I tried, first the signup page doesn't show the form on 3 separate browsers.
Paused my adblockers, nah no luck.
I don't remember what I did exactly using dev tools but, noticed the form was there, but just not being rendered. Somehow made it work, and signed up. Never got access, even after a month.
Mojo is all talk for now.
They could've just paused the marketing until it was atleast in open-beta. Why the hype without allowing access.
Yowzzaa, but the damm Beta on Tesla can't still think of slowing down while cornering on steep curves, throwing people on to the side and not navigate into a dead end that drops into the ocean.
This is not an anecdote, it's my personal experience.
No way I'm not gonna trust a system again, that puts human lives (even those who are not driving a Tesla) for a beta test.
Ok, I finally see you what you meant by landfill, I mean Google is synonymous with search, for anyone. How many on HN think of Google as privacy invasive and hostile, yet use it as primary search engine?
They literally redirected you to the internet's search page for general public.
Your opinion is very subjective if you consider redirecting to Google is correct or not.
The original argument of mine was, why should HN implement code explicitly for a target website, that is blocking it?
Do they do the same for region locked content websites/pay walled sites, no? Then this is not correct.
Ah, right, Lol, I didn't think of that at all.
But could this be a wider problem than this? Many open source projects that could've been "sponsored" by someone like you, but ended up being commercialized by vested interests?
I agree with you, but the product != Infrastructure. I don't want to overpay my taxes, drive one type of car, that refuels only at a particular fuel station, and it be a judge on when and where my car can drive, restrict me from visiting other states.
Sending to Google is, asking you to go back to the road most info is accessed from Google, it's not a landfill, they're not sending you to some random troll website hosted on tor.
They don't want interactions with HN plain and simple.
It's up to them to choose how or on what parameters to deny your access, at least they did their part gracefully.
But adding explicit evasion techniques for a particular site, is not at all graceful. HN is a discussion forum, not an archive or search engine or content repository, it seems funny for it to add explicit techniques to allow its users to evade restrictions.
Genuinely curious, but why didn't you?
Didn't the project gain enough visibility before you noticed this post, or was there any other reason which would be helpful for others to know.
If someone doesn't want you to come into their house, even if you found the address through a friend it's not rude.
They neither are scolding you nor berating you like certain websites that are linked from HN. They just redirect you to Google, from where you can still visit the site. They don't want direct links, that's it.
When did I ever say that, HN is free to talk about them, but they don't want you to visit them.
And I think it's up to them to choose with whom they want to interact.
You can't just claim that without knowing the context.
Also I think, if some website doesn't want you to link to it, and politely redirects you. You shouldn't deploy code evade referrer for that site particularly. C'mon we aren't talking about using a VPN to evade a region block, it's one website abusing their referrer tags against another.
Java has been stable for years I think, they don't switch frameworks and paradigms every weekend. Code you wrote in 10 years ago in Java8 most probably don't even need a refactor for Java 22. And funny enough just yesterday there was a thread on reddit where people still claim to be running Java 8 on prod, now that's not a good thing but 10+ years even after deprecating means something here.
Simplicity, you can code Java apps to be as simple as possible, unless you use a framework like spring, but that's true for any language. I used vert.X and it's expressJS of Java, very lean, basic but more batteries available if needed but still manages to be simple. Java doesn't have complicated concepts to understand nor does it have 100 ways to do the same thing.
Scalability, dockerize and scale to your heart's content or tweak the JVM params and max out your hardware.
What am I missing, not trying to be snarky, maybe you wrote more Java than me, may be for years, so genuinely curious to understand.
For additional context, I coded in NodeJs, Python, Go, Swift and Java. and each have its own merits. So I'm not biased against Java.
Eventually if anything is popular enough it attracts, advertisers, corporations, govts, spammers, influencers and what not.
It's true from Reddit, to AI and crypto.
Enjoy stuff while it's new, even if all the apps reroute to a new backend, it will still be the same again. Probably not instantly but eventually.
