an_opabinia··on Streaming data in Postgres to 1M clients with GraphQL
Which is it? Sounds cool.
an_opabinia··on W4 Games raises $8.5M to support Godot Engine growth
It’s incredible really that these guys are talking about using Godot on consoles when it is in such bad shape.

Even if it’s a bait and switch, and they spend 100% of the funds on just like, making the engine better, $8m isn’t going to get you to 1/20th of Unity or Unreal. It is an insurmountable niche.

an_opabinia··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
The Victoria man is a radical, he's there to start an interesting conversation, he's succeeding.

> power to compel people to do the dishes... and some type of punishment to mete out.

Moneyed, Adam Smith style capitalist economies still had slaves, colonies, wars of plunder.

It's tough. I see from your other commenters you're rooting for the guy. The mainstream opinion that executives should be paid less, that the lowest wages should rise, these are freebies and could be implemented in an afternoon, with no consequences. All the changes in a person's day to day life would be for the better. Mainstream people advocate against inequality not the elimination of money, but yes, there is a transfer, a "handout," as part of those goals.

an_opabinia··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
The USA was a fine place to live, many people happily gainfully employed, many investment accounts booking gains, labor and capital coexisting in harmony, when inflation was double what it is now.
an_opabinia··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
Nobody said no classes. There wasn’t money like there was in Europe. There were by some intellectually honest estimates 50m people living in N and S America at the time of arrival, a huge number of people were living day to day without money.
an_opabinia··on A Victoria man has gone two decades without money
We could probably 10x the number of “handouts” as you call them, at least in the US, and nothing would change. We’ve auditioned it already: $4T in stimulus, the $600/wk employment checks, etc. What negative negative impact really did that have on an average person’s day to day life? “Handouts” made pay rise for the first time in decades.

Even the landlords. I don’t know any landlords who are on the street because of the rent forbearance and eviction moratorium - and I don’t even agree with those policies.

Indigenous Americans, prior to colonists’ arrival.
an_opabinia··on Hobson's Browser: How Apple, Facebook and Google broke the mobile browser market
90% of the revenue is games. Mobile Chrome would only need to support idiosyncratic Unity and Unreal web targets for a significant chunk of that revenue.
an_opabinia··on Hobson's Browser: How Apple, Facebook and Google broke the mobile browser market
Listen to yourself. “Under the works.” Dude, c’mon of course it was the lawsuits.

Show me a traditional App Store app that doesn’t pay 30% of IAP to Apple.
an_opabinia··on Hobson's Browser: How Apple, Facebook and Google broke the mobile browser market
It is totally about preventing alternatives to the App Store.

Retrocomputing is the programmer’s version of cringe. The very border of benign.
an_opabinia··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Indeed, because of diminishing marginal returns on studying, even being in the 50th percentile of SAT test prep hours can improve your score by 10 percentiles. It’s hard to know how many students spend 0 hours studying but it is definitely the plurality if not more than 50%. However, implementing such a study program in schools has two obstacles: (1) is forcing a student to do more than zero hours of studying the same as doing more than zero hours of studying? Will such a student just zone out and get 0 gains, but your study will book positive time spent studying? (2) 80% of the exam score will still be explained by G factor.

I don’t know how many hours of studying 50th percentile is or whatever, by the way. This just comes from the math and the fact that the test scores are “ex Gaussian” - skewed normal, where the small skew is explained by everything that isn’t G, like studying.

an_opabinia··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Most people who weren’t 18 and living in CA in the last 3 years don’t know much about how UC admissions work.
an_opabinia··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Dropping the SAT is an affirmative action measure.
an_opabinia··on It doesn't take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
In my experience, for every engineering subordinate that turned out to be good that I didn't bother testing with leetcode, there were 19 who sucked and also failed their coding test, or sucked and we should have tested them. So far, among people who studied programming as their major in college, the best predictor was the prestige of the university they attended.
an_opabinia··on California sues Activision Blizzard over unequal pay, sexual harassment
???

That’s not how this stuff works at all. This is a dispute over the facts, and how much money the facts are worth, and to whom. Someone in California DOJ had a 15 minute meeting with their people and ATVI people and already decided that ATVI is going to face a fine to be paid to its female complainant former employees, the next three years of lawsuit is a ceremony enacting that.

an_opabinia··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
Public health emergencies exceed the limitations of your contrarianism.
an_opabinia··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
> trust the ruling class

Where did you get the idea that in this country, rural people aren’t ruling the country? Have you looked at the senate lately?

an_opabinia··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
People are downvoting you because you’re saying something in bad faith, knowing full well you can just punch into Google and go down this specific thread of argument all you want. But to keep this on topic, being on the “don’t deal with it” side of a public health crisis is a great example of the limits of contrarianism - it’s always bad faith to be a contrarian in that context, but not all contexts. So you do you!
an_opabinia··on Why won’t Americans get vaccinated?
I don’t think you understand those charts on the CDC website. Did you notice that the bars for, eg, fully vaccinated add up to 100 across all groups? Did you look at the table?
an_opabinia··on PG&E will bury 10k miles of power lines so they don't spark wildfires
Because digging entrenches incumbents.
an_opabinia··on PG&E will bury 10k miles of power lines so they don't spark wildfires
There's no point, you're right. On the other hand, there is no money shortage. I wish the government ordered PG&E to make poles ready for fiber instead.
an_opabinia··on Epic Games acquires Sketchfab, a 3D model sharing platform
> Although in reality the cost reduction will likely be spend elsewhere to makes things a little better. So it is either cheaper or higher quality games.

I agree. Photoreal asset libraries will make it a lot cheaper to finance games though, like to build your demo to get the funding could decrease radically. This is the strategy behind these acquisitions.

an_opabinia··on Your idea is brilliant, your idea is worthless (2016)
Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill were rich kids who spent millions on other people to develop League of Legends. We don’t talk about them as indie developers obviously, even though in 2009 they were independently publishing (and continuing to independently publish) because the formula of capital, namely a rich kid, is really successful in gaming.

It just goes to show how obnoxious, again, this kind of take is. I don’t get why people are so obsessed with purity of creation in games.

an_opabinia··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
Prices are rising.
an_opabinia··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
Like with everything, all that matters is whales. The kind of person who eats lunch out every day doesn't care if it's 20 GBP or whatever, so they'll keep paying whatever it costs to eat whatever they want. What'll happen is places without enough whales, like low foot traffic, will poop out or become ghost kitchens.
an_opabinia··on JVM Anatomy Quark #26: Identity Hash Code
People are obsessed with that siphash paper, and they're obsessed that Java hashcodes do not do the siphash mitigation, but I don't know if any of it matters. People are obsessed with thinking it matters though.
