amwelles··on Show HN: Ask for a Raise Day
I love this idea, but as somebody (who happens to be a woman who has never asked for a raise), he doesn't answer the question of how to start this conversation. I think that having a few talking points to get started would be really beneficial.
amwelles··on Show HN: AhhLife, a free replacement for OhLife
This is how I use DayOne (http://dayoneapp.com/). All backed up in Dropbox, and it alerts me once a day to write things down.
amwelles··on Show HN: Moo.do – Simple, Powerful Organizational Tool
Just wanted to say that the onboarding for this is fantastic. It made me understand/explore way more than I normally would. I really wanted all those things in the help list to be checked off!

I plan on giving this app a whirl for the next few days to see how it goes.

amwelles··on Write every day
What helped me to write better was to read great writing. That includes novels and long form non-fiction.
amwelles··on Your brain makes decisions while you sleep
That sounds a lot like sleep paralysis, which I've experienced while trying to induce lucid dreaming.
amwelles··on A Call for a Low-Carb Diet
Case study of one, but I've been a (lacto-ovo) vegetarian for roughly eight years now. I do eat a lot of pasta and cheese (because I find it delicious). I've always had a high metabolism, and I actually have trouble gaining weight. I've always been under the impression that there is not one universal diet for everybody. Instead, people should choose something that works for them. This is what works for me, and I'm pretty dang happy with it, so I've stuck with it.
amwelles··on Who's in the Office? The American Workday in One Graph
I have a friend who works for a large software company (SAS), and he works 9-5 with an hour lunch in the middle.
amwelles··on Square Cash 2.0 Adds Free Money Transfer by Text Message, Payment Notes and More
I use it to pay my dogwalker/dogsitter. It was so much easier than leaving cash on the table or trying to futz around with Paypal. She's not that technologically savvy, so needing only her email address was great. I've also used it to pay friends back for my half of dinner and bills.
amwelles··on The Anti-Facebook
I loved using Nextdoor in my last neighborhood. I found a dog walker, got some free yarn, and had a better sense of who my neighbors were. I don't have the time to dedicate to being a neighborhood leader, though, so I haven't set one up in my new neighborhood.
amwelles··on Show HN: Play-tag, an iBeacon dog collar
I too don't like the name that they've given the "leash" feature. It seems like it just alerts you when your dog has gotten away... which is often too late to do anything about.
amwelles··on Show HN: WorkHub App – Make money on the go with simple tasks
I definitely don't. Although I did go through and fill out the profile after seeing this comment. No new tasks, though.
amwelles··on Getting rid of burnout permanently
I've been teaching with Girl Develop It. If you have a chapter in your area, I highly recommend it! Both men and women can attend/teach, although its main goal is to promote more women in tech.
amwelles··on Getting rid of burnout permanently
The only way I've been able to avoid burnout is to be deeply involved in things outside of work. I work a 9-6 front-end development job, but I also teach people how to train their dogs once a week, I write creatively for my own purposes, and I teach coding classes a few times a year. By adding variety and focusing on a few things that are important to me, I don't get burnt out on any of them. It does mean that I'm busy, but I've never felt more stable than I do now. I think having those competing priorities helps me keep the balance that I need to avoid burnout.
amwelles··on Can Reddit Grow Up?
I find that the smaller niche subreddits have that vibe. I subscribe to /r/dogtraining which has loads of valuable information and a ton of helpful, active users.
amwelles··on Ditto: 3D virtual try-on
Is there a final video of the example given? I see it all the way up to the mesh with the glasses, but after that, it's just still shots.
amwelles··on Ask HN: Where to find remote PHP jobs?
This is definitely true. We're always on the lookout for Drupal devs, although we don't hire remote workers.
amwelles··on NYC taxi visualization
I was surprised by the amount of fares that just went a few blocks. Looks like it should have been pretty walkable in a lot of those cases.
amwelles··on Women's underwear gets an upgrade
If all else was equal (fit, quality of material, looks), and they could actually be worn for a full day without getting "full," I'd give it a shot.
amwelles··on Show HN: The Markdown Resume
Definitely. Here's my (outdated) resume for reference: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r9m2j0msphbwdmq/resume.pdf
amwelles··on Show HN: The Markdown Resume
With Marked, yes. You can write your own CSS styles, which carry over to the PDF.
amwelles··on Show HN: The Markdown Resume
I have a markdown resume as well, but I just used Marked[0] to convert it to a nicely-formatted PDF. Then again, I've never needed to submit a MS Doc file.

amwelles··on Show HN: Keep, an app that helps you love how you spend every dollar
I adore YNAB. I started using it a couple of years ago when I had no savings and was living paycheck-to-paycheck but was making decent money. Now I have a cushy emergency fund, moving apartments was a breeze, and I'm saving up to buy some land. You do have to stick to their philosophy, but I've found it works really well for me.
amwelles··on Live Google transit directions change the value of transit
What about transit riders who don't have smart phones? If there aren't set routes, how would those people know where to go and when?
amwelles··on Learn Git in the Browser
We used this tutorial at a Girl Develop It workshop last year. It worked really well! I also learned jQuery via Code School on my own time the year before that. Keep up the good work!
amwelles··on Show HN: 10% off at Starbucks when you buy with Bitcoin
The linked page says it takes 25 minutes to get your money back, but the FAQ says it takes only 15 minutes.
amwelles··on Switch from Photoshop to Gimp: Tips From a Pro
I've been paying the ~$20/month for awhile now. I'm totally happy with that, and I don't think that's an unreasonable expense, especially if you're using it professionally.
amwelles··on Exist
I tend to track things I'm trying to improve on or get in the routine of doing. Checking something off as being done is very satisfying to me. I've been using an iOS app called Balance (no affiliation to them) to do this, and it works perfectly with gentle reminders.
amwelles··on Drop the ego and prove "I could make that so much better"
I'm actually working for a company now that specializes in online marketing/websites for lawn care and pest control companies. There's a guy in the area that was a programmer for a big corporation (IBM, maybe?) and he saw an opportunity in pest control, so he started his own company and pretty much wiped out all the competition. Then he bought the agency I'm now working for so we could focus on similar lawn/pest companies across the states.

I don't think that's really your plan at all, but it's awesome that you're looking into a market that is full of outdated websites and definitely has room for improvement!

amwelles··on [dead]
I would love to be able to easily invite friends to events via SMS. I have a group of friends who come out to a regularly-scheduled hang-out, but we change up the location each week. It would be awesome if I could see who plans to attend.

I haven't been able to find anything like that yet (at least for iOS). I feel like it could probably be done with Twilio's API, but I'm a front-end developer and haven't really looked into it that much.
