amsully··on Nazi Germany had no hope of making an atomic bomb, uranium cubes reveal
It’s a great read from beginning to end https://germanhistorydocs.org/en/nazi-germany-1933-1945/tran...
amsully··on Rebuilding memchess.com from its archive
It allows you to flow through lines and play best book moves naturally. You can tell it that you want to focus on particular lines or line and it will let you know when you've made an incorrect move.
amsully··on Rebuilding memchess.com from its archive
Great to see this on HN and great work grondilu! Many users of memchess yearned for it to return and it really did disappear suddenly. It fills a great gap between a strategy book/guide and pure tactic trainers. Next step is for it to be refined as it was always a little clunky.
amsully··on Archive of the Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, 1945-46
I've posted a top level comment as I felt it was worth it, but the last surviving prosecutor passed away April 2023 and wrote multiple inspiring works on the topic. Lookup Ben Ferencz' 'Parting Words' . While the book doesn't spend its entire time on the trial, it discusses the difficulties of holding people accountable for war crimes (even today).
amsully··on Archive of the Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, 1945-46
The last surviving prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials passed away on April 7, 2023 at the age of 103. It was Ben Ferencz' first case after he learned of the Eastern fronts 'Nazi death squad' (Einsatzgruppen). All other tribunal prosecutors were committed to other cases when he described the atrocities to his superior, so he took the case on himself. It both validates the top comment of allies not seeing eye to eye, but also how understaffed and underprepared the tribunal was.

He later helped start the Hague and dedicated his life acting as a voice for the voiceless due to war crimes and genocides.

Despite the horrors he witnessed, Ben was a beam of light for all around him. I highly recommend his works. Especially "Parting Words: 9 Lessons for a Remarkable Life"

amsully··on Chaining, or why you should stop returning void (2012)
It's amazing how easily my brain skips a subtitle like this. Years of subconsciously parsing advertisements has won over my elementary school teachers encouragement to "read the whole passage."
amsully··on The high-frequency trading arms race: frequent batch auctions (2015)
The exchange you are referring to is IEX [1]. Michael Lewis (author of The Big Short) wrote Flash Boys about the intricacies of low latency trading and this exchange [2]. One of the primary "unfair" aspect of HFT is Front Running and has been illegal even before electronic trading (the name comes from traders racing ahead of big buyers in the trading pit). It was a big problem during the advent of electronic trading but has since been tamed. Exchanges arbitraging off their clients order books is another matter. Trading fast in reaction to real time (public) events is a market efficiency. Not accessible to the masses, but neither was traveling to wall street to place a trade.

amsully··on ‘It’s a superpower’: how walking makes us healthier, happier and brainier (2019)
Not sure why you are being downvoted. This article provides credentials then as the interviewer asks questions O'Mara makes unbacked claims (that he would like to test). Would need to read his book "In Praise of Walking" to determine the sourcing of his research.
amsully··on Users may be unable to connect or experiencing degraded performance
Recent intermittent issue asked me if I would like to log the restart of the application. Selecting yes provides a host of interesting configurations and logs.

Some interesting logs most people can understand:

[REDACTED] info: [OPPORTUNISTIC_RELOADS] User has been blurred for 1200000 ms, evaluating whether or not we should reload opportunistically
[REDACTED] info: [OPPORTUNISTIC_RELOADS] Client is still visible to the user even though it is not focused, will avoid updating
amsully··on DuckDuckGo, Google, and Android choice screens
It looks to be between 60-70% depending on what data is used.

amsully··on Some coronavirus patients haven't gotten their senses of smell or taste back yet
To pile on.

Ben & Jerry's ice cream has large chunks of toppings because Ben Cohen had a reduced ability to smell. He charactized quality heavily towards texture of the ice cream resulting in what Ben & Jerry's is know for today.

amsully··on Iranian teen shocks Magnus Carlsen to win $14k prize
Also, if you watch the game right after the Magnus victory, Magnus once again declares 'This is just game' before Alireza masterfully turns an amateur position into a victory over the world chess champion.
amsully··on Iranian teen shocks Magnus Carlsen to win $14k prize
For those interested, the POVs from each player are uploaded on youtube.

Magnus POV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJtyQLkmRsU Alireza POV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb9RtOBuLm0

Best moment: https://youtu.be/rJtyQLkmRsU?t=3958

Of the many spectacular moments and reactions, the best was Magnus winning a lost position and believing it won him the match (and implying Alireza has much to learn before being able to beat him). Magnus was still a professional when defeated, but emotions were running high at the point in the match.

amsully··on GitHub is now free for teams
We reached out and were told we would need to upgrade to the enterprise version. (This was probably 5 months ago before they announced a few startup friendly offerings)
amsully··on GitHub is now free for teams
Hi! Any perspective of extending SOC2 Report access to the Teams level? Small companies in regulated environments aren't able to jump to enterprise ($$$) so need to look elsewhere to get a SOC2 compliant version control system at a decent price. Love the Github product so it was tough when we had to make the decision to move off of it.
amsully··on Robinhood experiencing a ‘system-wide outage’ as markets rebound
The issue was identified hours ago and not yet resolved.

amsully··on Chrome deploys deep-linking in latest build despite privacy concerns
The google document being used talks about crossing an origin-boundary.

So website with bad script injected is loaded by the user and is able to make requests to a logged-in banking website with time-based/scrolling attacks.

amsully··on GitHub Enterprise is now free through Microsoft for Startups
Startups requiring compliance documentation from GitHub were forced to upgrade to GH Enterprise. Many competitors provide this for free or a fraction of the price. An industry based on an open source language will naturally have a race to the bottom in terms of price.

GitHub's CLI is a move to get people off the open source solution by obfuscation.

amsully··on Ask HN: Best solutions for keeping a personal log?
CSV with some cloud sync solution. I turned the overhead of manually logging an activity into a feature of committing to a task. I log Date, Start Time, End time, 'Project', and location. When I feel myself losing focus I end the task and take a break. Early inspiration from Cal Newport.

Supplement this approach with a small paper notebook (originally I used 3x5inch pocket then moved to a 5x8 inch) where you no longer need your phone/computer to log entries (enter them later). I'm collecting a nice physical library of notebooks that are chronologically ordered and contain everything from in depth technical tasks to notes on groceries. Also acts as a good spot for stickers collected on your travels.

Regarding transactions, I've started using everydollar.com. I've only started using it in 2019 so I cannot 100% vouch for it yet.

amsully··on Google's harvest of medical data includes names and full details of millions
Without reading the Business Association Agreement it is hard to determine if Google has 'Acceptable Use' of healthcare data. Storing in the cloud is one thing, allowing a Business Associate to siphon that data for other use is another.
amsully··on Google's harvest of medical data includes names and full details of millions
From the link below the bullet points:

"In addition, business associates of covered entities must follow parts of the HIPAA regulations."

All vendors must comply with HIPAA laws (ie EMR systems)

amsully··on AWS Fargate Deep Dive
Don't know from a Fargate perspective but Elastic Container Service (ECS) deploys EC2 servers that do not pass the CIS Benchmark. I don't believe you gain much from a security perspective.
amsully··on A Tarahumara woman won a Mexican ultramarathon in sandals (2017)
I see many recommendations for 'Born To Run'. I want to warn that the Tarahumara rarely (if ever) run on pavement. If you switch to a minimal shoe (or want to reduce injury risk) you should be primarily running on dirt or grass.

Interesting to see this on Hacker News.

amsully··on Ask HN: How to self-study mathematics from the undergrad through graduate level?
Good advice here.

If you choose the project/problem based approach I recommend https://projecteuler.net

You will learn a ton solving these problems (the programming aspect is the trivial piece in most cases).

amsully··on Scalable and accurate deep learning for electronic health records
de-identified is the key word here. That's how they attained the data in a HIPAA compliant way.

Yes there are problems with combining that data with other datasets to re-identify. Google would be in a rather good place to do that.
