ams92··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
“I got the bag and now have developed a conscience"
ams92··on Where is the AI jobs crisis?
I wonder when we’ll reach diminishing returns on new AI models. Haven’t tried Mythos or Fable yet but it seems like Anthropic is already priming itself for this by calling for a “slowdown” of AI development.
ams92··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
Equality is more expensive. It’s much easier to just cut advanced classes and shove the upper percentile students closer to the average in the name of having equal outcomes for all races.

Similar to other issues in this country, we like to address the symptoms of economic inequality instead of attacking it at the source.

ams92··on Iran starts Bitcoin-backed ship insurance for Hormuz strait
I think this is more due to the fact that the Iranian currency has completely collapsed.
ams92··on GitLab announces workforce reduction and end of their CREDIT values
What a shock, company whose share price is in the shitter lays people off and blames AI.
ams92··on A High-Level View of TLA+
I’m wondering the same. I’ve read multiple articles about formal methods and how they’ve been used to find obscure bugs in distributed systems, but usually they just show a proof and talk about formal methods without concrete examples.
ams92··on Some men tend to jump straight to innuendoes: dating app users on why they quit
The problem with dating apps is they turn to shit when it’s time for the platform to monetize.
ams92··on Older Americans Are About to Lose a Lot of Weight
People aren’t eating the right foods and not exercising enough. The cause is very simple, the solution is not. It’s hard to get millions of people to make lifestyle changes and that’s even assuming they have access to healthier food in the first place.
ams92··on Some of us like "interdiff" code review
Most of the complaints here could be solved by having smaller pull requests and then squashing commits when it’s time to merge.
ams92··on Xbox console sales continue to crater with 42% revenue drop
Historically, console makers have taken a loss on consoles they sell and they primarily make money on the games themselves. I wonder how much Microsoft actually cares about console sales.
ams92··on California DMV puts 42M car titles on blockchain to fight fraud
Yeah and 42M records is not prohibitively large.
ams92··on Canada became a car theft capital of the world
This is nearly identical to the massive issues with retail and car theft that we have in San Francisco.

The uber liberals will say “oh they’re just trying to feed their families” while there are endless low skilled jobs (since the pandemic) available that pay $20+ an hour.

The reality is that current policing and prosecution rules/prosecution practices make being a retail thief more convenient than getting a job. Nothing is going to change until the punishment becomes a deterrent again.

ams92··on Locked out of 14 year old YouTube channel because tied to Hotmail.com email
For many people SMS or emails with tokens are already pushing their technological capabilities. Might even go as far to say most people.
ams92··on How to test without mocking
With containerization it’s very quick to spin up test dependencies as well as part of your CICD. Why mock calls to a datastore when it’s super easy to spin up an ephemeral postgresql instance to test on?
ams92··on Seattle tumbles to No. 20 in global ranking of startup ecosystems
Seattle became a tech city because of Microsoft and Amazon, period. If they didn’t decide to have their HQ there, we probably wouldn’t consider it a tech city.
ams92··on Google Podcasts is gone – and so is my faith in Google
Each engineer gets paid something around 200k-500k all in depending on seniority. I doubt just 1 team worked on this product given the bureaucracy of big tech companies like google. So why shell out millions of dollars in salary per year when the product isn’t making money?
ams92··on 40% of Lawyers Are Women. 7% Are Black. America's Workforce in Charts
It’s all just a distraction from what should be a class war. It’s easier to keep the masses in line when they’re all squabbling about gender and race.
ams92··on Software Engineers Say the Job Market Is Getting Much Worse
Yep, we haven’t been allowed to hire anyone new on my team in a year. Definitely no headcount for junior engineers. With the cost of licenses for SaaS apps for a single developer my company would rather hire one senior engineer versus 2 juniors.
ams92··on Show HN: Ladder, open source alternative to 12ft.io and 1ft.io
I’ve rarely found it to be able to skip a paywall, I gave up after trying a few times.
ams92··on Cleaning Up Dead Bodies in AWS IAM
Managing IAM is a pain in the ass on AWS. I can’t speak to how much this product actually helps with that, but I would assume that that’s the problem they’re trying to solve.
ams92··on Amazon acquires Fig
You join a startup in hopes of it getting acquired or going public some day. Fig was never going to go public so if I worked there I’d be happy about the acquisition assuming that I wasn’t stiffed on my stock options when joining.
ams92··on Phone.wtf
> Is this a really problem?

No it is not for a normal well adjusted person.

ams92··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
They need to update the minimum salary for H1B. There is no reason to bring in a QA engineer making 50k per year who tolerates poor working conditions due to lack of better options. I think that 100k would make more sense, and it arguably should be higher if the country wants to keep fulfilling the original goals of H1B.
ams92··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
It’s all just a race to the bottom in the name of “equality”. Everyone with the means to do so is moving out of SF because of the terrible schools, and the kids suffering the most as a result are from poorer families.
ams92··on Is the US education system in a state of collapse, and what caused it?
You wouldn’t even need to raise taxes to improve some of these programs. Just stop spending such an absurd amount of money on the military.
ams92··on ‘America does so much more to subsidise affluence than alleviate poverty’
Yep, the cost to run these programs is more than it would be to have a 20k UBI given how to each person living in poverty.
ams92··on Place Your Bets
Cover letters already are meaningless.
ams92··on Tech layoffs shock young workers, older people not so much
I think it boils down to how old you were when the subprime mortgage meltdown happened in 2008, and how much your parents were affected by it. I wasn’t in the workforce until 2014 but seeing my parents and others struggle left an impression on me for sure.
ams92··on Canada bans most foreigners from buying homes
It's NIMBYism. Most people in a state like California will agree that more affordable housing needs to be built, but no one wants it in their back yard.
ams92··on The scourge of job title inflation
Before introducing levels Netflix paid up to 550k in cash to people with the title of "senior software engineer". My title could be "dumbest person in the world" and I'd be happy with it if I were paid that much.
