ams1··on Somebody’s Already Using Verizon’s ID to Track Users
ProPublica reporter/developer here.. There's a tool embedded in the article to see if your carrier is setting a tracking header.

We also published a follow-up about how AT&T has said they will stop using the header: http://www.propublica.org/article/att-stops-using-undeletabl...

ams1··on Losing Ground
If anyone is curious, the tool we wrote for rendering raster map tiles on the fly for this project is open source: http://www.propublica.org/nerds/item/announcing-raster-suppo...
ams1··on Sprint Will Sell a $12 Wireless Plan that Only Connects to Facebook or Twitter
We've already got TweetFTP: https://github.com/NYTimes/tweetftp
ams1··on Healthcare.gov has disappeared from CMSGov's GitHub account
They also removed the statement on their developer site (https://www.healthcare.gov/developers/) that "EVERYTHING we do will be published on Github." Here's a screenshot of the cached version: http://cl.ly/image/0f0R2x2l0w1t
ams1··on Businessweek Magazine's Classy Tribute to Steve Jobs
Actually they didn't: https://twitter.com/bizweekdesign/status/121871973688160256 and https://twitter.com/bizweekdesign/status/121918276459696129
ams1··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
Yep!
ams1··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually code at a hackathon?
I was also at the TimesOpen Hack day, and spent most of the day coding. There was a lot of chatter there, though (some of it contributed to what my app eventually became). Bring headphones for when you need to start building. Thankfully no one there presented deckware.
ams1··on Cultivate your Redis instances. Beta starting soon
I didn't say steal the code, I said steal the design. I didn't need to look at the actual source to make that distinction.
ams1··on Cultivate your Redis instances. Beta starting soon
Also, looks like they ripped the design directly from http://newyork.usehipster.com/
ams1··on Trippy: An App to Give You Just Enough to Read on Your Commute
I'd love to. Ping me at the address in the blog footer.
ams1··on Which programming book you just couldn’t stop reading from start to end?
Metaprogramming Ruby: http://pragprog.com/titles/ppmetr/metaprogramming-ruby
ams1··on In June the U.S. House passed bill to ban full-body scanners as primary method

ams1··on A List Apart: Get started with Git
It can handle whatever you put into it, but obviously won't be able to diff them.
ams1··on Ask Tom Preston-Werner, cofounder of GitHub, anything Today, Mon 18 Oct 2010.
Isn't git, by default, federated in that you can add any remote source you want and merge/pull/push it? Callbacks seem like icing there.
ams1··on [dead]
StackOverflow is the only one that comes to mind.
ams1··on Matt Cutts: New startup someone should do
You get something similar to this with the bit.ly sidebar bookmarklet. When you shorten a URL, it tells you how many clicks there have been on all bit.ly-shortened links for that URL. I always check out this number, and if a link has over a certain amount of clicks, I usually won't tweet.
ams1··on Ask HN: What do you take with you?
There's a flickr group devoted to this: The Items We Carry http://www.flickr.com/groups/theitemswecarry/pool/
ams1··on Ask HN: Is the source code for HN freely available?
http://github.com/nex3/arc/blob/master/news.arc
ams1··on [C4 release];
What new features would you want? I still use Tiger on my primary machine and haven't missed much (outside of performance boosts) in the subsequent releases.
ams1··on Hack: iPad 3G Runs on T-Mobile, Sends Texts [video]
How is this a hack (outside of the physical manipulation of the SIM)? Wasn't a big selling point of the iPad 3G that it is "unlocked."
ams1··on Ask HN: Gmail alternatives?
your contact list doesn't matter? it was leaked via buzz.
ams1··on The Swedish and git pull, or 'I fingered myself 5 min. ago'
Another reason you should fetch and merge, not pull!
ams1··on [Ask HN]How do I learn ruby on rails, if I already know a few other frameworks.
Read the Rails Guides (http://guides.rubyonrails.org/) and check out the Rails from Scratch series on Peepcode (http://peepcode.com/products/rails-from-scratch-part-i) -- they both got me up to speed pretty quickly.
ams1··on 750 Words
One thing that struck me as weird was-- after the spiel about the site being private (between 'you and you'), it asks you to sign in via facebook.
ams1··on Weird HN caching bug: I appear logged in as other HN users sometimes
I ran into a bug like this with rails and restful_authentication. It came from caching the logged in user through the session. I fixed it by using a cookie to store the logged in user instead. Here's the issue: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/145169/inadvertent-sessio...
ams1··on CSS3 “SnowStack” Demo – 3D Photo Gallery Using Flickr API
works for me on 10.5.7/Safari
ams1··on FriendDA
yea, with all these NDA posts I thought it would be appropriate to dredge up again.
ams1··on How to Save Apple from 1997
eerie premonition:

We'd all feel better about shelling out the bucks
for a Power Mac 9600 if we could get a tower with leopard spots.
ams1··on Tell HN: After suffering NewMogul withdrawal, I built another. Please stop by.
you said this is written in PHP -- if you don't have access to your php.ini file, you can put

  error_reporting(0);
at the top of the script to prevent warnings from showing up to the user.
