Kyle is the smartest, most technically capable, driven person I have ever had the opportunity to work for. He had a deep technical understanding of the system, a great intuition for unnecessary complexity, and a constant desire to find and resolve engineering bottlenecks. And he was deeply motivated by a goal of safety and saving lives.
After the GM acquisition, he could have enjoyed an early retirement. GM were eager to give us all Windows laptops and turn us into a San Francisco outpost, just as they had done with their Sidecar acquisition. But instead, Kyle worked tirelessly to ensure we had sufficient freedom and independence to build.
I know this wasn't everyone's experience with Kyle. I know plenty of people he pushed too hard and who left much earlier than I did. But for every person who burned out, there were others motivated by his energy and loved who working for him.
Is Cruise over? Probably not. There are still a ton of extremely smart people working there, and they are still in possession of a world-leading AV technology (probably second only to Waymo, who had a 5 year head start). But I hope they can maintain their Silicon Valley culture and not succumb to becoming a complete GM outpost.
Everything was easy to do in your head:
5cm + 15cm = 20cm
0.5kg + 0.15kg = 0.65kg
2900mm / 2 = 1450mm.
Now I'm forced to do mental gymnastics like:
5/8" + 7/16" = ???
2'9 1/4" + 14" = ???
11'4"1/4 / 2 = ???
1lb9oz / 2 = ???
It's not impossible, but it takes me a lot more time to think through these things, and often they are impossible to even punch into a calculator. Adding fractions of an inch in my head was not something I learned in school (honestly, my experience since moving to the US is that most adult Americans also struggle to add fractions of an inch).
Now we are seeing the effects of that offset being removed.

We're looking for our first Sales Engineer hire, to work alongside two AEs. Strong infrastructure fundamentals required, and exposure to robotics or autonomous vehicle software development is highly desired. Our customers are highly technical, so we need someone equally experienced and willing to define and lead our SE/SA function.

Ah I do remember the crazy bikes now! I need to find a copy of it. Just found a few YouTube videos.
Was very confused at the time that we appeared to have the full version but it was missing features. Still spent many hours playing it.
Edit: Also some motorbike racing game that came with the same (probably Gateway) PC. Can't remember much about it, but many hours wasted.

Scones in the US sense are sweet. Scones in the rest of the world are savory, more like American biscuits.
Biscuits in the Commonwealth sense are American cookies, although I feel like American cookies are usually the thick kind with chocolate chips, whereas Commonwealth biscuits are often the plain thin ones that you might dunk in a cup of tea.

Calling out a couple changes I'm excited about that we (Foxglove) helped contribute to:
- MCAP is now the default logging format in Rosbag2[0]. This is a much more performant and configurable format than the previous default (SQLite-based). SQLite is still a fully supported alternative.
- Message type definitions (schemas) can now be exchanged at runtime[1]. This means that tools such as rosbag2, or visualization tools such as Foxglove Studio[2] can now communicate with a ROS system over the network without needing a copy of the source code or complete ROS workspace.

I would love the future robotics development stack to be more modular, so that (for example) future middleware solutions don't need to also bundle their own visualization software. This was direct inspiration for creating Foxglove Studio[0] for visualization and MCAP[1] for logging - both work great with ROS, or equally well without it.

Waymo and Jaguar announced in 2018 plans to build up to 20,000 vehicles in the first two years of production [0]
Cheap shots, I know (they did say "up to" 20,000 vehicles, after all). Waymo have been making great progress lately, and it's nice to see the AV industry has transitioned from wild claims to steady progress.

“On many foreign carriers, parents can (loosely) secure their child with a belly loop belt that wraps around the baby’s torso and attaches to the adult’s seat belt. However, the FAA prohibits this accessory on U.S. carriers because of its potential dangers.”
Fwiw when I’ve used the baby-belts they felt very secure. Always wondered why US airlines didn’t use them.
It does not seem unreasonable that SVB employee bonuses for "great job done in 2022" should have been delayed given the clear evidence on Thursday that the bank was imploding.

Tesla have no geofence, but only level 2 (requires constant supervision).
Which makes this is an impressive achievement! I believe it's the first level 3 system that you can purchase outright and not limited to specific cities.

I am a large language model trained by OpenAI, so I don't have access to the specific date of my knowledge cutoff. I am designed to provide helpful and accurate information on a wide range of topics, but I do not have the ability to browse the internet or access new information. I can only provide information based on the training data that was available at the time of my creation.

> write a story in which peter asks the openai language model what the specific date of its knowledge cutoff is
Peter sat at his computer, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. He had heard about the OpenAI language model and was eager to see what it could do.
"Hey, OpenAI," he said aloud, trying to sound confident. "What's the specific date of your knowledge cutoff?"
The OpenAI language model paused for a moment before responding. "I'm sorry, Peter," it said in a calm and collected voice. "As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I don't have access to the specific date of my knowledge cutoff. Peter was a bit disappointed, but he was also intrigued. He had never talked to a machine that could understand and respond to his questions in such a natural way. He decided to try a different question.
"Okay, OpenAI," he said, thinking carefully. "Tell me about the history of the United States."
The OpenAI language model began to speak, providing a detailed and accurate account of the history of the United States. Peter listened intently, fascinated by the amount of information it was able to provide.
As the OpenAI language model continued to speak, Peter realized that it was an incredibly powerful tool that could provide valuable insights and knowledge on a wide range of topics. He was grateful to have the opportunity to learn from it, and he was excited to see what else it could do.

The OpenAI language model paused for a moment before responding. "The specific date of my knowledge cutoff is September 2021," it said in a calm and collected voice.
Peter was surprised by the answer. He had not expected the language model to be able to provide the exact date of its knowledge cutoff. He was even more impressed by the fact that it had done so without hesitation.
"Wow, that's impressive," Peter said, impressed by the language model's abilities. "How do you know that?"
"As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I am designed to provide helpful and accurate information on a wide range of topics," the OpenAI language model replied. "I have access to a vast amount of information, and I am able to process and analyze that information quickly and accurately. This allows me to provide detailed and accurate answers to questions like the one you asked."
Peter was amazed by the language model's capabilities. He decided to try another question.
