alxmdev··on Show HN: In a single HTML file, an app to encourage my children to invest
Probably, because everything would collapse if everyone was an "investor" and fewer people did actual work to keep the world going.
alxmdev··on It's insulting to read AI-generated blog posts
Many of those who can't be bothered to write what they publish probably can't be bothered to read it themselves, either. Not by humans and certainly not for humans.
alxmdev··on Amazon strategised about keeping water use secret
Isn't agriculture objectively more important and more beneficial to humanity than Big data centers?
alxmdev··on Xubuntu website hacked and served malware
Looks like another "/wp-content" gift, static HTML forever!
alxmdev··on rlsw – Raylib software OpenGL renderer in less than 5k LOC
Someone always points out how Doom wasn't "real 3D" like it's some sort of gotcha. Games are smoke and mirrors, it's all a 2D grid of pixels at the end.
alxmdev··on CSS Zen Garden
Glad to see the Garden is back! This and Spoono were some of my favorite websites back when CSS-driven web design was bleeding edge and people were just starting to use lots of nested divs instead of lots of nested tables. The book was nice too.
alxmdev··on Bare metal printf – C standard library without OS
What's the state of the art for cross-compiling in $CURRENTYEAR?
alxmdev··on The cost of renewing my .com domain is coming in at $52 for one year
Seems to be around that or even less at most places I looked. Gandi used to charge more, but not quite like this.
alxmdev··on The cost of renewing my .com domain is coming in at $52 for one year
I wanted to renew some domains with Gandi yesterday, and noticed that their prices increased a lot this year. This Reddit post is the only article I could find about it.

.com/.net/.org/.dev are all around $40/year to renew now, up from about $25 six months ago.

alxmdev··on CSS @property and the new style
Fancy CSS effects are slow to run, they use lots of CPU time just like Flash animations used to.

When I switch from this HN tab to the article page, Firefox's CPU usage goes from 2% to 26%.

alxmdev··on Grind – A first person shooter for Amiga 500
Tooling and code generation improvements no doubt help a lot, but IMO those improvements must be coupled with creative manual optimizations in order to get something like this out of a platform that was tailored for rectangular 2D bitmaps.
alxmdev··on Pixel 8 Pro
The 4A doesn't get security updates anymore though, right? The language on the website says "guaranteed until at least August 2023" so I guess it's up to Google's good will.
alxmdev··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
> I say buy the latest MacBook, expense it, factor it in as a monthly cost. These are expendable and essential tools. They pay for themselves

Yay, another top comment that steamrolls the posted article. I say don't buy the latest Macbook: instead repair, refurbish, and get true lifetime use out of these expensive devices. They're expensive to manufacture, expensive to buy, and expensive for our planet and people to just throw them away every year.

They're not expendable at all, here is just one example of the human sacrifice involved in their manufacturing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_Samsung

alxmdev··on New York City may be sinking under the weight of its skyscrapers
>> the city’s 1.68 trillion pounds of buildings are causing the city to descending

Imagine proofreading at least the headline.

alxmdev··on We need to tell people ChatGPT will lie to them, not debate linguistics
Thank you for your service defending the hot product of a profitable company against the criticism of everyday people, it's wonderful to have someone standing up for what is right.
alxmdev··on C Strings and my slow descent to madness
Bingo, you should never pass arbitrary strings where they could be used as format specifiers, it's like running arbitrary code. Some compilers even issue warnings when you pass non-literal format strings to the printf family.
alxmdev··on Orange Pi 5 Is a Great and Fast Alternative to the Raspberry Pi 4
You're not wrong, these things are just future e-waste with short-term support, like another commenter mentioned.
alxmdev··on Warren Calls Out Wells Fargo and Zelle for “Evasive” Responses about Fraud
Why treat it like cash when it's not cash, but a digital service pushed by banks? There will always be scum that abuse a system, but the way it is now the odds are stacked against honest people.
alxmdev··on Warren Calls Out Wells Fargo and Zelle for “Evasive” Responses about Fraud
It doesn't have to be something egregious like the Nigerian Prince. It could be a Craigslist concert tickets deal where you pay in advance and never hear from the "seller" again. Why be callous to innocent victims? Unlike cash, Zelle is a digital system that could provide some protections for all parties involved, like the option to file a dispute.
alxmdev··on Not Your Grandfather’s Perl
I think of Perl as a Python-PHP hybrid. A pragmatic product of its time that will endure, and while I'm grateful for never needing it, I'm glad that it's a solid option still for those who do.
alxmdev··on Tell HN: I used the same computer since 2007 (with minor upgrades)
What replacement battery do you use? I'm looking for a backup for my X220, but all the aftermarket batteries have terrible reviews and I'm afraid the $90 original Lenovo ones are degraded after 10 years and not worth the money.
alxmdev··on Little Sound Dj
I didn't have a Game Boy, but I did have a GP2X and had lots of fun with the LSDJ-inspired tracker, LittleGPTracker, worth checking out for all sorts of platforms: http://www.littlegptracker.com/
alxmdev··on Takeaways from looking for a new senior role in tech
I always thought the preference for phone calls over e-mails is so there's no written account of anything that might be convenient to backtrack on in the future.
alxmdev··on Heroes of Might and Magic
I still play HoMM 2 over the holidays every year with DOSBox. I like its artwork the most out of all the other same-gen titles, it feels like I'm in a colorful story book the entire time. The mechanics are just enough strategy to still be relaxing and fun.

Every now and then I also revisit the Sega Genesis version of King's Bounty, the precursor to HoMM. The over world on that particular port is real time action, you have to avoid enemies as you explore the map.

alxmdev··on Microsoft Tilecode
I've been keeping an eye on the 32blit, glad to hear there will be a general release! I ported my game framework to the Cortex-M0+ Gamebuino earlier, and Cortex-M7 with FPU and 1MB RAM are next level in comparison, sounds more capable for computation than the GP2X too.
alxmdev··on Commodore Amiga could get a mini/classic version next year
It would be cool if one of the makers of these throwback devices would reboot a classic platform for real, instead of just as a nostalgia box. Like this mini Amiga, what if it was a system with a SDK and its own future, something that rides on the good name of its predecessors but also continues in the same spirit.
alxmdev··on Wireless Is a Trap
I remember a friend had a PDA with Bluetooth over 15 years ago. It's dumbfounding that after being around for so long it's still such a train wreck even on mainstream products.
alxmdev··on 'Dord': A Ghost Word
Put yourself in the editor's shoes, caring for the dictionary is your life's work. Aside from misspellings, grammatical or factual errors, and typography issues, this is the other kind of bug that can rear its ugly head. Not to mention that you can't issue patches to copies that already shipped :-)
alxmdev··on Overview of Python dependency management tools
Reading this makes me grateful that I can get away with just apt-get. I wonder how prevalent this is, since not every project needs specific or latest versions of the runtime and libraries, only a minimum. Some are just plumbing tools that stick to the stable core, and the Python 3 ecosystem has been mature for enough years that older distro packages are still useful and capable.
alxmdev··on Update to L.A.'s stay-at-home orders
For what it's worth, none of that subtlety is reflected in the article's 10+ word title, at all.
