altero··on Suicide Prevention Sheds a Longstanding Taboo: Talking About Attempts
OK. Let's do the stats.

Men are 95% of homeless, 90% of prisoners, 95% workplace deaths, 80% suicides...

In second case:

I went unnecessary offensive, call it "most women cry for help" whatever.

The fact is that people who are at risk of suicidal behavior are equally distributed between genders [1]. Also mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are equally distributed [wikipedia].

So I see two options why women have much higher suicidal attempt rate:

- it is a cry for help

- men suicide attempts are under reported

What part do you actually disagree with?

If you have two persons with the same body mass, both of them drink 1 liter of whiskey. I bet in one case it will be 'really bad hangover' and in second case it will be 'suicide attempt'.

altero··on Suicide Prevention Sheds a Longstanding Taboo: Talking About Attempts
It is not suicide attempt if you are not planning to die. For example drug overdose is not necessary suicide attempt.

Men in general are treated like a shit, so they kill themselfs. Most women are emotionally blackmailing their families.

altero··on The Humanities Need an Ally: Could It Be Computer Code?
> At its best, the study of the humanities is an exercise in analytical skills, critical thinking and logic.

I think there is a typo, author probably meant mathematics. Most study of humanities are threatened by logic and critical thinking.

I seen cricket for 50 cents/pound on street market in India.
altero··on My First Year of Coding
Perhaps you have not noticed that most loosers are men.
altero··on My First Year of Coding
> Oh, I see. So, since no one said,

Kind of. I see lot of endorsements, but no evidence that someone actually read her code. There is also nobody who followed her on daily basis, since her announcement year ago.

You do not understand my basic complain. I do not mind girls get special treatment (not that she would need it). I mind that boys do not get the same special treatment.

There is a huge shortage of developers, but I only see helping programs to encourage GIRLS coding. There are FEMALE only internships and so on. Men are only 38% of college graduates.

Now when men learns to code by himself despite education system, he is called chauvinism because he is proud of his achievements.

Can you show me _one_ comment which actually recommends how to improve her skills? You know: " I noticed you are using ... but there is framework which does it better"... sort of stuff.

I think boys deserve bit more encouragement and girls deserve bit more honest constructive criticism.

altero··on My First Year of Coding
I think here website is impressive as bunch of simple puzzles. I teach programming as a hobby and I may actually use some of that stuff.

I have problem with comments here. Nobody offers any sort of constructive criticism. We should review source code and give her some advice. Perhaps recommend a new framework to use, or even completely new direction (NodeJS).

altero··on My First Year of Coding
- About half of the comments are about girls/gender/sexism and so on.

- Any sort of criticism is down-voted to hell, this never happens when author is a boy

- and finally show me similar toy project from boy, which would make into front page of Hacker News.

altero··on My First Year of Coding
Nothing against Jennifer, her stuff is impressive.

But I find this ridiculous. This is called learning and is done by thousandth/millions others. Everyone has to overcome their fear of being judged and stuff. Giving kudos just because of gender just undermines girls to take on harder challenges in future.

I started coding professionally when I was 17 not to starve, while overcoming depression and mental illness. My cousin started coding recently, he was born without hands! Nobody gives a shit because we are men.

So you prove my point :-)
altero··on Popcorn Time Is So Good at Movie Piracy, It’s Scary
Sometimes I need to check time on my phone. And I carry laptop from work, I never actually used in cinema.

Anyway 'movies from internet' just provide better services. And in most countries in Europe it is actually legal.

altero··on Study: Women Who Can Do Math Still Don’t Get Hired
What is funny about that? 20% of rape victims are totally ignored.
altero··on Popcorn Time Is So Good at Movie Piracy, It’s Scary
Also cinemas are really becoming hostile. I have to subject my bag to inspection. I also risk arrest every time I take phone out. They also ask me to leave my laptop at reception...
altero··on Study: Women Who Can Do Math Still Don’t Get Hired
I call bs on this. Companies are desperate to hire programmers.
altero··on Study: Women Who Can Do Math Still Don’t Get Hired
Study: 90% deaths at workplace are men.

Study: most victims of violent rapes are men (prison)

Study: college hostile towards men, most graduates are woman.

YCombinator already openly discriminates man, there is no need for secrecy.
altero··on Amtrak Residency
For start why is long distance flight 10x cheaper than train?

Air planes require much less personnel and have no tracks. Trains are still in 60ies with fat unions and zero innovations. Also how is 50 ton airplane less efficient than 5000 ton train?

And if train takes 5 days instead of 5 hours, you should also count in the foot print of person who is traveling. In one sleeping coupe you could fit 6 aircraft passengers...

Sure airplanes do make traveling easier, but that does not make them less efficient.

altero··on Amtrak Residency
Sure tax it to oblivion. Air travel impact per person is surprisingly low (comparable to driving). Trains have lot of fat which is not included in their footprint.

How about making law which would compensate prisoners not prisons?
altero··on Sixteen, Alone, 23 Hours a Day, in a Six-by-Eight-Foot Box
How about both?
altero··on Sixteen, Alone, 23 Hours a Day, in a Six-by-Eight-Foot Box
Trust me, it is not normal to handcuff 6 years old children. You have "dangerous criminals" rest of the world has "children".

I find it hilarious that those people are old enough to be locked into box, but can not legally drink or have a sex.
altero··on The psychology of hate: How we deny human beings their humanity
Why go so far? 1% of Americans are in prison or some form of detention. But yeah, they do no count.
altero··on Can 10,000 hours of practice make you an expert?
This is kind of sexist. It suggest anyone can become expert in a few years, yet women are clearly discriminated everywhere.
altero··on My mom is dying, and my bank account is dry. I need help
To be honest I am not sure this is US only fail.

In Europe cancer is treated for free. But there is barrier which prevents doctors from puring money into terminal patients. Some special procedures available in US are not on the list (not accredited yet). Some others have priority queue and person over 50 would not have a chance to qualify.

altero··on My mom is dying, and my bank account is dry. I need help
Relax.

I found this believable. Hi lived in LA and saved some money. Single person, some reasonable skills, shared accommodation, not buying ijunk.... he could made this savings in 2 years. Not everyone has student loan.

altero··on My mom is dying, and my bank account is dry. I need help
Does not really matter, I know similar stories from all over Europe including UK, post-soviet countries and southern states.
