alphaomegacode··on 13yr old groomed publicly on Twitter and kidnapped, despite chances to stop it
It's likely that in the area of content moderation and related matters, employee numbers do matter.

The parents did their job and gave the child's iPhone to authorities. Authorities followed up and gave information to Twitter then corrected the misspelling and gave that corrected information to Twitter.

Here's more info on Twitter disbanding it's Trust and Safety Council which addressed child exploitation as well as other matters https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-twitter-inc-technology-...

And here's an article about layoffs gutting Twitter's Child Safety Team to the point of one person doing said work in the Asia-Pacific region https://www.wired.com/story/twitter-child-sexual-abuse-mater...

alphaomegacode··on Google to kill Dropcam, Nest Secure hardware next year
Google killing off products at the consumer or enterprise level has become such a meme.

Won't surprise many of us if we ever hear of them announcing they're ending Search lol.

alphaomegacode··on Silicon Valley elites are afraid. History says they should be
I was wondering why The LA Times would publish a story that seems intent on somehow linking 1970s threats of violence with the recent SVB issue. It was only after reading the article did I see the author has a book coming out on a "tech backlash".

Of course there are complaints against tech companies and of course it comes from left, right and center. That's because tech is now woven into our personal and corporate lives.

But suggesting any large numbers of persons advocating violence seems a real reach and could be seen by many as plain irresponsible.

alphaomegacode··on Why I’m Resigning as an FTC Commissioner
Hmm. A commissioner appointed by Trump finds everything objectionable and makes outlandish claims when she can't emasculate the FTC? That might very well surprise no one.
alphaomegacode··on ChatGPT Extension for VSCode
Anyone know how this by mpociot compares to this that was just posted on Reddit? https://old.reddit.com/r/javascript/comments/10qp62f/i_made_...
alphaomegacode··on Canada falls from Freedom Index top ten
The "Freedom Index" is a ranking by two right-wing bodies, the Canadian Fraser Institute and the US Cato Institute. Here is one of many articles that explains the Fraser Institute's right-wing leaning. https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/munk-hayek-and-t...
alphaomegacode··on OpenAI Used Kenyan Workers at $2/Hour to Filter Traumatic Content from ChatGPT
Some may see that story title as almost clickbait.

An average bank clerk's salary in Kenya is about 30,000 Kenya Shilling per month which is about $241 US dollars. At $2/hour, the data workers were making around $280 US dollars per month.

If there really is an aggrieved worker, I'm sure the pay is not great when compared to salaries in the US but the worker isn't in the US or dealing with US costs. One of the reasons many around the world seek to emigrate to the US is for American salaries and only realize when they're in the US that the cost of living in the US is often much higher than "back home".

alphaomegacode··on Medically assisted deaths could save millions in health care spending: Report
Thank you for correcting the many false statements made in the parent post.

The Canadian government allowing mentally ill persons to terminate their lives should be real cause for alarm.

alphaomegacode··on Former NASA official trying to stop SLS: “There was just such visible hostility”
I think in any organization the size of NASA there will be politics and when it comes to a government body that depends on Senators for funding, even more.

I think a very important element of the story is that now NASA itself has heavy-lift capability. Whether the SLS allows NASA to fly the multiple flights per year, that's really a whole other budgeting and project decision. The multiple flights per year - whether in-house or commercial - will still depend on political appropriations and isn't only a technological issue as we know.

Ms Garver is quite open about her being a Space X fan and obviously they've done amazing things but there is something to be said about government having the technological skills to do this type of project versus just being an oversight organization.

alphaomegacode··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
I'm not sure if it was ever an official thing but I remember accessing their pages and speaking to their reps at conferences regarding Angular.

For example, if you look at the Angular 1.2 docs, look at the bottom of the page here and you'll see Google included their copyright on those docs https://code.angularjs.org/1.2.27/docs/guide/ie

alphaomegacode··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
For a company that operates at such massive scale for their own services, Google has some glaring oversights when it comes to enterprise services.

I have a friend who volunteers as a webmaster for a charity org and they kept getting notices about their impending shut down of G Suite and the need to move to Google Workspace. The problem seemed to be a credit card and yet, when my friend was showing me on his laptop, there was no place for them to enter credit card information. They ended up losing all their email and Drive & Docs access for days and couldn't even get an email or phone address - paid or not - to address the issue.

After getting burned at a mid-sized business I used to work at with Angular 1.x and Google Glass, I learned that Google apparently sees business services as experiments rather than long-term investments.

alphaomegacode··on Firefox will no longer be a supported browser – service.mbna.ca
I understand if Firefox has some issues for this bank but this is a public-facing site of a multi-BILLION dollar bank.

TD Bank owns MBNA and their unwillingness to test and support Firefox seems to echo the comments in here that it's just laziness. It isn't like users are trying to run some cutting edge game experience.

alphaomegacode··on New York City’s Growing Behavior Gap
Worrisome statistics and a real public safety issue for not just NYC but San Fran and other cities. Well-written article.
alphaomegacode··on Rogers network outage across Canada hits banks, businesses and consumers
The timing of that update tweet is what gives pause for concern. If it were the same or similar thing as to what took down their network nationwide in April, it seems reasonable that they'd just say something like "Hey guys, sorry but the network is down due to <insert similar cause here>."

A lot of us are in IT and for a network of national importance in a "developed nation" to be taken offline so easily is worrisome.

alphaomegacode··on Delayed Messages on iOS
Me neither, can't see "the obvious" reason for them not implementing this.

Apple usually trots out "privacy" or "security" when people find their software lacking in terms of usability or convenience but I can't understand why this would be an issue for them.

alphaomegacode··on Dartmouth Eliminates Student Loans for Undergraduates
Sadly, quite a lot of tuition seems to be supporting university employees who simply don't care.

A friend of mine wanted to go to school after working for over a decade. She went to the University of Miami, got to the Continuing Education department and noticed not a single person on duty but a taped piece of paper saying everyone was working remotely due to CoVid. In 2022! Headed on to the location for Undergrad Admissions and was given a website where she could get more info. For a school that charges $65K+ a year.

It happened again at a college in DC where all that she could get was a website versus speaking to an admissions counselor, getting a group tour on some particular date, etc.

Even though about half of the university employees encountered were college students, their attitude of just cashing a paycheck and keeping the seats warm is both a cost and a reflection of the quality of administration.

So much of University tuition now seems to be going to maintain salaries and perks for layers upon layers of employees and administrators versus student benefits.

alphaomegacode··on [dead]
While the trial was about Heard, this writer decides for herself that all women are under attack by someone suing for defamation. Essentially, she is saying that society must believe whatever a woman says but should not believe whatever a man says. If these people claim that gender equality is one of their goals, then how does a woman such as Heard (and others) immediately get the benefit of the doubt and a magical immunity cloak while any male is automatically guilty? Many who sought a moment of fame and fortune via the MeToo vehicle have been all too happy to ruin careers by mere accusations against men with the "evidence" being someone saying so. The same persons will tell you that women should be able to use the fullest extent of the legal system to seek recourse. However, after a trial that included all types of evidence, we are told it was misogyny and not the evidence or an entire jury. If there is to be real gender equality that so many seek, both men and women have to be able to seek redress when they are defamed in public.

alphaomegacode··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
I've had similar problems with the UX on AirPods. Here are the choices in Bluetooth for AirPods to connect to my Mac: 1. Automatically 2. When Last Connected to this Mac

What does #2 even mean? I want my AirPods to connect when I last connected?

It's been common for me using my AirPods to take a pause in talking and while using my PC for the AirPods to detect sound on my PC and then switch.

Yes, definitely better than many other Bluetooth earbuds but I think people were hoping Apple's control of the OS and hardware would've produced a better, consistent experience.

alphaomegacode··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
As an anecdotal example that may be relevant, I wanted to upgrade to Monterey and my Mac Mini said there wasn't enough room.

Hooked up a Western Digital external drive that I had used on previous Macs and launched Time Machine. And that's when it started. Time Machine presented what seemed like a stack of Finder windows in the middle, a timeline with hash marks on the right-side and the only button highlighted was the "Cancel".

No menu, no other actionable buttons, no right-click menu. Nothing. So after hitting various key combos and mouse buttons, I decided that my 30+ minutes trying to use Apple's built-in backup software to backup a few folders was better spent finding 3rd party software.

And that was another user experience fail in my opinion for Apple and any "total quality" experience.

And that's not even talking about Safari or XCode or Pages or Numbers or iBooks not syncing and so many others.

alphaomegacode··on Ask HN: How do you create a cross-platform GUI without using Electron?
So in Python, you can use Qt but I am not sure how their licensing works. You can give Tkinter a try in Python since it's a "default". Also there's Kivy but I don't have experience in that.

As for Javascript, you can use Electron or React Native but I don't know how far along React Native on the desktop is compared to Electron.

Hope that helps and someone may come along that could speak in more depth on one or more of these packages for your use case.

alphaomegacode··on Ask HN: How do you create a cross-platform GUI without using Electron?
Is there a particular language that you needed to use or have skills in? That's a very important qualifier.
alphaomegacode··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
The technical aspects many of us would like are all there and work fine - it's the business aspects that seem to be problematic.

As the hardware or service providers get greedy, they keep trying to extract more money from the consumer.

Not saying Roku got greedy, merely saying it could happen with the hardware or the streaming services themselves.

alphaomegacode··on Ask HN: Why is Chrome so awful on OS X?
I can't speak to the details of RAM usage like speedgoose did below but it does seem at times that Google decides Mac users are second-class citizens.

If you see some of their products on Mac OS versus the same products on Windows, you'll notice the UX and performance differences.

alphaomegacode··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
I'm assuming they are and that makes it even more amazing I think.
alphaomegacode··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
The pleasant surprise is you all make improvements to the hardware and the software that really enhance the experience.

Nowadays, leading billion dollar tech companies often come out with upgrades that highlight being a few microns thinner and camera resolution without really launching actual innovative products or without enhancing the user experience.

Thank you.

alphaomegacode··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
Yeah wasn't sure if they had a process to it outside of pull requests. As in some other channel or method for hardware. But you're right, pull requests it is they said.
alphaomegacode··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
Will do thank you
alphaomegacode··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
Thanks for the in-depth reply.

Is there some process you setup on Github for others if we test with our own cameras and let you know?

alphaomegacode··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
Truly amazing how the Raspberry Pi team keeps innovating.

As far as I know, they're not a billion dollar company yet they keep innovating by making better Pi's and continuously upgrading the builder/user experience.

Congratulations to Upton and team!
