all_usernames··on Show HN: I built a Rotten Tomatoes-style platform for durable products
We have a battery-powered drill that my girlfriend brought with her when we moved in together over 7 years ago. We use it very rarely, probably once every 4 months. We don't even have a charger, and the battery has never been changed. Still enough charge to screw into particleboard. I hope someone here can explain how this is possible :D

all_usernames··on How to properly manage SSH keys for server access
Agreed, and what you're saying is really the proper way do things in a cloud-native environment where all hosts are ephemeral, containerized apps are idempotent, and especially a serverless environment where no one has access to the invisible host.

However, for anything shy of full serverless, just s/developer/ops and you still have to solve for the same problem. At the end of the day you're always going to want someone to be able to get a shell on the box for troubleshooting some critical issue. If there is a box.

all_usernames··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
Something like 3lbs of wild caught fish as feed to produce 1lb of farmed salmon.
all_usernames··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
This is a remarkable statement.

If everyone would just cut down on meat, even avoid it a few days of the week, it would make an enormous positive impact. Same goes for seafood.

From the perspective of someone who eats meat twice a week or so, it's absurd to hear people say they couldn't do it. Yeah, they could.

Of course, with governments subsidizing the hell out of the meat industry those $0.99 McDonalds specials will keep encouraging everyone to eat it 3x/day...

I think this is a cynical attitude. Until 1990, the majority of people driving cars did not wear a seatbelt.

An even better analogy is tobacco use. In the 1950s and 1960s America, you'd hear the same kind of things about cigarettes as you do these days about meat-eating: it's red-blooded, it's manly, it's good for you! Meanwhile the incredibly high impact to health of people and populations was becoming more clear all the time, just like the consumption on meat.

Attitudes, beliefs, and stupid behaviors can and do change over time.

If the ~50% of Americans who choose not to vote, actually did, that would by definition change the politicians who are "able to win."
all_usernames··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
Umm...

1) Vegetables are better than meat foods in the minds of the hundreds of millions of vegetarians out there.

2) Vegetarians do not consider their diet to be a 'sacrifice'. Quite the opposite. There are many benefits.

Therefore, one could argue, more people need to be educated on the benefits of plant-based diets, and they will choose them.

Because there are alternatives to population control, like increasing the sustainability of food and energy sources. After all, the planet now supports twice as many people as it did a few decades ago, and that's basically down to agricultural yield improvements.

Making less humans seems to be morally taboo, no one wants to go there.

all_usernames··on 62% of Americans Say They Have Political Views They’re Afraid to Share
> makes it sound like we all are

Ding ding ding! Yes. We all are. Conservatives and liberals.

Everyone is programmed with racist attitudes from the culture-at-large. Many or most never question these unconscious attitudes.

In my experience, folks who have been actively working on racism and social justice for years if not decades are the first to admit that they too carry racist, largely unconscious, beliefs and attitudes.

A lot of people don't seem to grok unconscious bias.

all_usernames··on San Francisco apartment rent prices are dropping fast
I live in SF and before covid used to commute outside the city. Maybe I'm an outlier (or just in my late 30's...) but the reasons I live in SF are actually better with the lockdown: I love walking and biking the neighborhoods, I love Ocean Beach, Glen Canyon, and Fort Funston, Crissy Fields and the Embarcadero, the Presidio, biking across the bridge. This city has so much to love that has zero to do with bars or restaurants, and after 10 years living here, frankly I'm tired of paying the premiums all those activities entail.

I've heard Starbucks and other big chains "burn" their beans to guarantee consistency (few of their customers, if any, are drinking it for coffee flavour).

all_usernames··on Ask HN: My mother has shaky hands – guidance on iPhone accessibility settings?
What's most interesting to me about this discussion is that most of the participants will, within a few short decades, be needing the UI enhancements we're talking about. It's interesting because until now accessibility is definitely not a mainstream thing, but when all the X'ers and Millennials get to retirement age, it certainly will be.

Hmm, sounds like you've got some dyfunctional managers. I've never personally witnessed management faking urgency on a project just to get productivity on it. Management is generally charged with making sure ICs know what the priorities are as set by Product. It's possible that Product changes its mind often, confusing everyone. But if Product, Management, and ICs are confused about what your "critical business functions" are, I think you've got some systemic leadership problems.

This is an odd use case given that Datadog can already store logs in your S3 buckets, and Datadog integrates with AWS Cloudwatch to pull in AWS metrics!

all_usernames··on Covid-19 Antibody Seroprevalence in Santa Clara County, California
If the vast majority of people contracting the virus never have symptoms, or have symptoms mild enough that they don't seek a doctor, or they DO seek a doctor but can't get a test because of testing criteria restrictions, I think the 50-85x number starts to make a lot of sense.
all_usernames··on Covid-19 Antibody Seroprevalence in Santa Clara County, California
It's known that the vast majority infected do not experience symptoms, or have mild symptoms. I don't think you can draw the conclusion that they had prior immunity.

Here in California as of today -- if you have a cough, and a fever, you will not be tested unless you have had international travel or known contact with a victim. This I know because I've spoken to two doctors and a nurse through Aetna.
