alistairSH··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Does Barefoot make anything decent? My experience with them has been mostly cloyingly sweet whites that really weren't drinkable. Gag.
alistairSH··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Same - the local wine shop has yet to fail me when I ask for a recommendation. Given them a price range and either taste preferences or meal pairing, and they have always sent me home with something I enjoyed.
alistairSH··on You are no longer invited to dinner
I meant kids that go to watch the game.

The football team has ~40 kids and basketball has ~12. The school has ~2000. At least in my area.

alistairSH··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
I'm sure it's a bit of both, but as I said, when I was a kid in this region, it was uncommon for any Friday night activities for the kids. Weeknights and weekend mornings/afternoons, absolutely. But we're not trying to get together on a random Tuesday.
alistairSH··on You are no longer invited to dinner
Where I grew up (and live now) - DC metro - those games are often Friday, but it's not that common for families without high school kids to attend. And by the time the kids are in high school (or even middle school), the parents just drop them and come home. But yeah, unsurprising that these are bigger social events south and mid-west.
alistairSH··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Middle-aged, in the US. From my perspective, a lot of the change is due to overbooked children. My wife and I have a group of ~5 couples that we used to get together with regularly. Before any kids, it was ad-hoc, often out somewhere (dinner, bar, whatever). When the first couple had an infant, that changed to pot-lucks at their house (easy to put the kid down for the night). But now that 3 of the couples have kids, 2 of which are in middle-school, it's almost impossible to get the gang together - one of the kids always has some practice or another event. We still get tougher in smaller groups, but less frequently.

This is counter to when I was a kid - it was rare that I had a scheduled sports event on a Friday or Saturday evening. During the day, sure. But 6pm+ on Friday? Basically never. But that seems to be common now. Travel sports, so lots of weekends totally away, or specialized coaching at odd hours, or just a 3rd activity to pad that college application. It's crazy. I honestly have no idea how kids have any fun today (and I say that as somebody who played 2 varsity sports, one instrument, and was an Eagle Scout - but through middle school, I still had plenty of time for just hanging out - it was common to ride my bike for hours on a Sunday - into town, get an ice cream, across the river into DC, and back).

I have, and their prices have gone up. Their reserve wines are $20 now. Still a good buy for bottles that are usually very drinkable. Bit similar wine in Italy would still be about half that price.
alistairSH··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Not just American wine... wines from any region have always been more expensive in the US.

Quick poking around Google... Italy, France, and Germany all have mid-tier bottles of their own domestic wine for far less than we (in the US) get any wine, domestic or import.

alistairSH··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
I'm confused, 4 quarters or 4 years, he never exercised the remaining batch of options, so what is the basis of his suit? That somebody should have reminded him he had options outstanding? What am I getting wrong or missing here?
alistairSH··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Stocks aren't a necessity to live. Housing is (and while ownership of housing is not, the land costs impact rental rates as well).

And as mentioned in the sibling, few people think of stock gains as an inherent right. Stocks go up and down and we all accept that.

alistairSH··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
I own a home. I still see the state of housing as a problem. Because I’m not a greedy selfish asshole.
alistairSH··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
It's not so much a matter of thinking one is "better" (for whatever definition of "better") - it's that the Chinese tech and Chinese government are so obviously coupled at the hip while American tech continues to claim independence (all the while paying billions in bribes directly to Trump's family and vanity projects).
alistairSH··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
If the house is paid off, you have that equity. Maybe it's $500k instead of $1million, whatever, it's still worth money.

To your second question... the difference is a wage is based on adding economic activity while the land value increase is almost exclusively rent-seeking. Apples and orangutans.

alistairSH··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Show me someplace a change in zoning from R1 to Rx sent values through the floor.

Around here (Metro DC), that simply hasn't happened. There's so much pent up demand for housing that at worst, the appreciation has slowed, but I'm not even convinced that's happened, as the infill/redeveloped land is actually being used and generating economic activity (vs parking lots or old flats and offices nobody wanted).

alistairSH··on One Piece of Flock Camera Data Put This Innocent Woman in Jail for 13 Days
Sorry, when you're in a position of such power (and the ability to wield deadly force backed by the government is as powerful as you get), you don't get to be ambivalent about the misdeeds of your coworkers.

Even if the system is only 5% bad, that's too damn much.

I mean, have you seen what ICE is doing these days? And how many local agencies are happily deputizing their officers to do that same work?

alistairSH··on One Piece of Flock Camera Data Put This Innocent Woman in Jail for 13 Days
That’s all true. But we’ve known police and prosecutors are like this forever. No need to give them tools to be even lazier and that make it easier for them to abuse us.
alistairSH··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
Are there any examples of markets where price discrimination is good for the average consumer? Airline travel is the one that pops to mind - first class customers pay well above marginal cost and effectively subsidize the cattle class, right?
alistairSH··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
That sounds pretty insane to me.

IME (hiring, not interviewing) it's always been 3-4 rounds. First is an HR phone screen (usually 20-30 minutes on the phone), 2nd with hiring manager, 3rd with a senior engineer/architect, and a 4th with the hiring VP. And those are almost always combined into a single morning or afternoon(2+3 or 3+4) and the final round doesn't always happen (VP's choice).

alistairSH··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
We should not criminalize speech because it makes somebody sad.
alistairSH··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
Assault was already illegal. So, this is to also ban calling the police names?

Already illegal: "I'm going to kick your ass" Now illegal: "You're a poopy head"

alistairSH··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
It didn't matte who/what looked at the maps - the maps were at least 11 years old and showed what was, at the time, a barracks. Nobody bothered to check for newer maps or verify it was still a barracks.
alistairSH··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
It's definitely an ad, but it's also been there for years now. And of all the ads I encountered across various platforms and spaces in real life, these are about the least obnoxious.
alistairSH··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Haven't those ads been there for years? Pretty sure I've seen them for years.
alistairSH··on What Capital Never Told You About Rent
Do you mean disposable income or discretionary income?

Because taking 20% of the former leaves a lot of the population unable to pay for essential living expenses because they effectively have zero of the latter.

alistairSH··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
Same is true for software "engineers". We don't take a professional exam or adhere to any professional licensing. We aren't legally engineers in some states/nations.
alistairSH··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
But, many of the members of that organization make their money from various forced arbitration deals, so that doesn't necessarily move the needle back towards the consumer.
alistairSH··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
That's 75%+ of all legal cases.
alistairSH··on Border agents can search cellphones without a warrant or reasonable suspicion
Sure, but if you're driving in NM or TX or AZ, what constitutes that reasonable basis for a stop? As long as the car is legal, there can't be any, yet they still do roving patrols. The also stop buses and trains mid-transit (not at stations), which again, hard to conceive of why that would be necessary - if they know an illegal is on a bus/train, sure stop it and get the person, but asking everybody onboard - should be illegal.
alistairSH··on Border agents can search cellphones without a warrant or reasonable suspicion
But the 100 mile rule? That covers damn near everybody in the US (>200 million, or 66%, give or take) subject to warrantless searches on the whim of whatever the police want?
alistairSH··on I don't like passkeys
My only issue is the ... unclarity... with them.

The option pops up in the middle of a normal log-in flow. I'm guessing most non-techies don't know how it's implemented.

Oddly, some login flows display a normal user/pwd form, but you get the in-browser "use a passkey?" option/popup which further confuses matters.

Thankfully, me, wife, and all our parents are tech-savvy enough to use password managers, so the fallout from lost passkeys hasn't be an issue. But I certainly see how it would be an issue for anybody entering passwords from memory or similar.
