alex_duf··on Dumped orange peel transformed a barren pasture (2017)
I understand it more as "it turns out composting tons of organic material makes the soil more fertile"

Which is far from a breaking news. I'm just curious about how composting this much agrumes didn't unbalance the soil's pH, but that they don't mention it at all in the article.

alex_duf··on Bitcoin puzzle #66 was solved: 6.6 BTC (~$400k) withdrawn
But touch that $1B+ wallet and suddenly nothing is worth anything... so if I had the capability to silently steal money from the bitcoin blockchain, I would go slow, and in discrete places.

And I'll also add that night-charging can only scale up to a point, there's a point where the country would end up consuming more at night than during the day.

So it really depends on the local situation, local energy mix, local infrastructure.

alex_duf··on Synthetic diamonds are now purer, more beautiful, and cheaper than mined
I replaced my téflon pans with carbon steel. I find the transition and learning curve to be much more difficult than téflon.

Cooking an egg is a big no-no, I need to think about when to squeeze a lemon or when to put my tomato sauce otherwise I might damage the seasoning. Nothing blocking but definitely a lot of things I don't want to think about.

alex_duf··on Intent to unship: HTTP/2 Push
I looked into using this, but changed my mind. Say you get a hit on Index.html. you probably want to push script.js and style.css. So now you've pushed a few hundred kbits.

Now, the user comes back and asks for index.html again: do you send everything again? Surely the resources are still in the user's cache. If you don't, how do you know what to send? Only the user's browser knows what's in can't and what's not.

So you face the choice: speed up first visits but waste bandwidth for subsequent visits, out slow down first visits but speed up subsequent visits.

alex_duf··on The Atlantic is cooling at record speed and nobody knows why
I'm not sure about the title "nobody knows why"

I recently watched a conference by Prof. Rahmstorf, it was eye opening, and a little bit grim:

alex_duf··on Verso – Web browser built on top of the Servo web engine
This is true for any software though, so if we push that reasoning to its extreme, no one should ever use any free and open source software, which I find a little bonkers.
alex_duf··on Probability Estimates of a 21st Century AMOC Collapse
Yes it will get cold, but paradoxically it will also get much warmer. Mote extreme weather is what's going to happen. I know this was probably sarcasm, but more co2 means more energy in the system, and more extremes.
alex_duf··on Taking my diabetes treatment into my own hands
Doctors burning-out is probably the worse red-flag you could have for a health system. It's frightening to think the person diagnosing my parents and children might not be in full possession of their capacity or make rash decisions.

I'm seeing the same pattern for many crucial functions having been pushed over the line during the last two decades or so. Whether it's a doctor, a teacher, a nurse, a childminder, the police, etc. All the jobs that are essential for a developed society have crumbled down to the point I'd discourage any young person to pursue a career in that sector.

alex_duf··on Taking my diabetes treatment into my own hands
I also lived in two of the richest countries with a social medical system

My experience is that GPs are over-worked, under paid (given their responsibilities), and can only afford to do shallow diagnostic in the 5-10 minutes they've got per patient. That's explained by a slow but relentless dismantling of any operational margin that existed in the system, whether it's financial, time etc.

I'm talking about the situation in France and the UK, not sure where you are, my point is that I agree about the system failing us, there's a lot to be said about what could be done but that's outside my area of expertise. I'm just being a little nicer to the doctors, as there's only so much they can do given the means they're given.

alex_duf··on For advertising, Firefox now collects user data by default
I'm just saying that the domain that hosts the page and the domain that hosts the image are often not the same. Wikipedia hosts the articles, wikimedia hosts the images.

If a browser wants to be strict about what it loads, most of the web would appear broken. Maybe google could have the weight to force such change, but no way could mozilla impose such a strict rule.

alex_duf··on For advertising, Firefox now collects user data by default
By this logic wikipedia wouldn't be able to load any image

It's still bothering me that Y is a vowel in french but not in English. Can we all agree on something for once?
alex_duf··on How babies and young children learn to understand language
My SO and I were raised respectively in the UK and France. We both speak fluent French and English.

Our plan has been: we each speak our mother-tongue (French for me, English for her), and see what happens.

My first child understands english perfectly, but replies in French, and my second is too young yet to say any word, but she understands both languages.

Now we've moved to France and found ourselves speaking more and more in French to each other, and -unfortunately- our household is now speaking mostly French rather than keeping English in the mix. But this makes me think maybe we should all speak English at home now that French is acquired by my eldest... not sure!

alex_duf··on How babies and young children learn to understand language
I was facing the same issue when I learned English (I'm French), and I found that watching TV Shows with the subtitles helped a lot.

So you get to hear that wall of sounds, but you get the words spelled out under the picture.

alex_duf··on Ladybird browser spreads its wings
I hope both Ladybird and Servo succeed in creating a new browser engine. Though I do have a slight preference for Servo as it's using Rust. Not that Rust is magical, but given how much attack surface there is in a browser, it seems picking C++ is a bit odd in 2024.

alex_duf··on I connected Windows XP to the Internet; it was fine
I'm afraid this is factually wrong, my computer had a public IP until the early 2010s as around these days modems were just models and not routers too.

And with IPv6 all my devices could be publicly addressed but I've enabled a firewall to block incoming traffic at the router level.

Surely you can see the difference between giving away a significant portion of your income to your landlord, or paying towards your mortgage.

In one case you can sell your property and get your money back, so you can decide to do whatever you want with it (like index fund if you so chose). And in the other it's your landlord who's either paying their mortgage with your money, or placing it in said index fund...

wow the speed at which we can be blasé is terrifying. 6 months ago this was not possible, and felt this was years away!
