alex_duf··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Not OP, but I'm going to guess:

- Nissan's petrol engine is the crossbow, a well optimised generator for onboard battery

- Every other brand's EV is the machine gun. About 4 times as energy efficient as a petrol car when you take into account the lifecycle of the vehicle, so probably more when you talk about a hybrid car.

alex_duf··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Isn't it the whole point?

Throwing money at a problem was expensive, it's a lot less expensive now

alex_duf··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
I don't think there are many fabs capable of producing HBM

My hope is on Huawei, which has recently developed a stacked chip architecture that reminds me of HBM, and I'm wondering if that's step 1 of China entering HBM production.

I don't know enough about hardware, so I might be saying absolute nonsense, happy to be corrected so I can learn where I'm wrong

alex_duf··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
You might be surprised to know that worldwide, low carbon electricity production is a little above 40%

alex_duf··on Transit rewards
I've heard multiple times Americans complaining about being on the bus.

Genuine question, what's up with being on the bus?

I lived in Vancouver BC, I can't see anything wrong with their bus. Not perfect, but yeah... It's a bus, goes from stop to stop. Anything special about bay area buses?

alex_duf··on Microsoft agentically ports Copilot runtime to Rust for $120K

alex_duf··on How GLM built its own inference infrastructure
I would be extremely surprised if US labs weren't aggressively trying to optimise their stacks in exactly the same way. Any gain in performance or efficiency directly affects the bottom line as well as research speed.
alex_duf··on One year of sponsored Servo development
One thing at a time, it looks like implementing a rendering engine from scratch is already enough work for 20 years. First make it work, then make it better.
alex_duf··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
I'm skeptical too, but there's a parallel market where people re-sell accounts and access tokens. This would make tokens much cheaper.

There's also an argument to be made that paying the token full price may be cheaper than going through your one RLHF or whatever other techniques that costs money.

alex_duf··on Compute-efficient pretraining and scaling to trillion-parameter models
A 10x reduction in pre-training means a 10x faster feedback loop. I'm pretty sure any lab would sign up for that. You can start experimenting on different approaches much more aggressively.
alex_duf··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
It's useful though, as I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that the gases generally used in HVAC tends to have much worse warming effect than co2 per volume.

We do need heat pumps deployed at large scale, but sometimes I worry we don't understand they need to be handled with care at the end of their life

alex_duf··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
If I'm not mistaken, it means 1kWh of electricity moves 4.1kWh of heat into your hot water tank. Heat pumps are amazing.
alex_duf··on Open Source Durable Objects for Postgres
Hard disagree there. I still don't know what the article is about if I'm being honest, but it doesn't bear the markings of being generated.
alex_duf··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
You can but I don't want to see that energy bill
alex_duf··on GPT-6 Astra, looped transformers, and hidden reasoning
So if I read this correctly, Astra is not hiding reasoning, and the only technique we know off that hides reasoning is recursive latent reasoning.

Do we know of any major lab or large open source LLM that uses recursive latent resonning? Can't an additional network be trained on that latent thinking trace to decipher what's going on?

alex_duf··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
To the risk of contradicting myself, the less time I got, the more tempting it's been to jump into Apple's ecosystem. I love the hardware, I appreciate Apple's apparent care for privacy, but I just love my linux too much both in terms of UX and for what it represents.
alex_duf··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
yeah no open wifi in sight, MAC address is banned at the router level, but I appreciate the concern

alex_duf··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
What would the HN crowd recommend for a good linux streaming box + hardware with decent TV UX and remote?

My LG is completely offline and I'm using an nvidia shield to display any content, but I'm thinking maybe I need to go the extra mile, there nothing preventing an android tv box to do the same.

alex_duf··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
Similar, I was only using it as a screen for my shield so I factory-reset it and never re-connected it to wifi.

It's actually a lot faster now (it's an 8 year old TV, their OS can get a little heavy on older models)

alex_duf··on Hackers have withdrawn ~4k BTC (~$320M) from the Liquid Federation wallet
Maybe there's a middle ground where the code itself is only made visible at the same time as the latest build.

This shortens the exploit window

alex_duf··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
Not that I love Microsoft, but they would get a lot of heat if they let anybody generate harmful content as well.

They can't win on that topic.

Now I would not want to appear to defend the mess they've created out of windows, that's not the point.

I'd call it dystopianism, this page reads like an episode of Black Mirror
alex_duf··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
I'm not so much talking about developing countries, but more like UK, France, Germany etc.

Developed countries hiding behind the fact that their contribution is small. Of course it's small...

For context in France we regularly hear about how France is responsible for only less than a percent of global emissions. That's specifically what my argument is against.

alex_duf··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
The argument that small countries don't matter in the equation is silly.

There are ~200 countries, of course on average your country will be less than .5% of emissions. Thinking .5% is small enough to do nothing is exactly the kind of thinking that leads us to inaction.

So yeah, china and the US need to get their act together, but so does every other country.

alex_duf··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
One person's consumption doesn't matter, but multiply it by 8 billion and it does.

It's like being in a traffic jam and complaining about the other people in the traffic jam... Dude, you're one of them.

alex_duf··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
The threshold isn't measured in windmills, it's measured in co2.

If we emit more than 0, then we're in trouble.

Needless to say, we're in a lot of trouble.

alex_duf··on Mistral's Shieldstral: 3B open-weights model for multimodal moderation
thanks for testing it!

I guess that would make sense for such a small model to be missing the subtlety

alex_duf··on Mistral's Shieldstral: 3B open-weights model for multimodal moderation
could the long s `ſ` be throwing the model off?
