The idea of having a moral compass is antagonistic to the worldview of a lot of people in tech, so they are instinctively dismissive or condescending to anyone who does.

it means that essentially the corrections officer union has gummed up any and all reforms passed through legislation (think video cameras in public areas, anti-violence training, etc.). this has led to a situation where there is a preventable suicide about once every 2 weeks in the prison and state officials are calling for federal intervention since they can't effectively change conditions; https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-man-dies-r...

for those unaware, even in deep blue New York, Riker's has been run as a Guantanamo-style prison camp where there is no civilian oversight over conditions or corrections officers. to me, the most appalling aspect has been the amount of people locked up indefinitely over misdemeanors and thrown into gen pop to basically die

If you believe Facebook is terrible, isn't taking a high-paid position there and gamifying their internal processes in your favor while not helping a floundering business plug the holes in its sinking ship the real way to take direct action? If several hundred people independently did this on their own (and perhaps not even intentionally), it could have a meaningful impact in taking down one of the worst corporations in human history.

I agree with most of your point but why be dismissive of the very evident reality of how corroded democracy has become in the Western world in large part because of how Facebook-poisoned certain demographics and their elected representives have become?

Two-thirds of respondents (67.2%, 95% CI 66.1%, 68.4%) perceived “a serious threat to our democracy,” but more than 40% agreed that “having a strong leader for America is more important than having a democracy” and that “in America, native-born white people are being replaced by immigrants.” Half (50.1%) agreed that “in the next few years, there will be civil war in the United States.”

Amazon has a pretty developed video and display advertising market for publishers called Unified Ad Marketplace; for our business, it's typically in second behind AdX/Adsense for revenue and impressions won. That said, I'm not seeing any revenue breakout from Amazon that specifies how much this side of the business makes.

WSJ's reporting is very good but their editorial board is maybe the most off-kilter in the entire industry; like 1/3rd of their op-eds are asking why the Supreme Court won't take up a case to allow employers to bring whips to the office.

The regular DDG results for 'tank man' are baffling bad too; it amounts to little more than entries on Wikipedia that have 'tank' in them.

It's pretty bizarre how much overlap there is between HN commenters and people who have been rewired by the Facebook news feed.

There's nothing secret about New York's "deep interests" - real estate development is the city's king maker.

Who on earth thinks Mother Jones is a far left propaganda outfit?

Damn, a millionaire professor at Stanford has issues with Howard Zinn. Funny coincidence!

A total coincidence that 15 FWD: FWD: UNIon RUInEd My Life stories immediately dominate the conversation whenever a story like this hits the front page.

The people who become obscenely wealthy in this country become so precisely because they have so little regard for others and almost no comprehension of the long-term impacts of massive inequality (either to the nation or their own physical security). And the system has become so perverse and adept at indoctrination that these people are heralded as heros when they drop a few crumbs from the table.

So you're digestion of her letter should not be informed in anyway by the fact that she routinely employed the tactics that she now claims she's a victim of? She's spent her career vilifying and seeking out personal retribution for people who she's disagreed with, I don't know how this doesn't factor into one's purview.

There's several layers of irony here, chief of which Bari Weiss headed a very vocal campaign to fire anyone at Colombia who didn't exist on the far-right on Israel/Palestine - and of course, falsely painted several professors as racist and anti-Semitic:

They should have spun off DoubleClick for Publishers and other server/ad mediation into separate companies and is likely what will happen if the government is successful in their case.

What does Google have a shrinking share of? This article is specifically referencing ad tech, of which DFP has near 100% market share, while AdX is greatly outperforming it's rival (Facebook audience network pulled support for mobile web in April while Amazon's much-ballyhooed A9 platform turned into a big Whataburger).

Their issue isn't that they are in the newspaper business. Their issue is that they own almost all of the ad tech business from top to bottom.

How do you develop a worldview where the grotesquely status quo mainstream of Reddit is considered "far-left"?

The site became mainstream while still being extremely vulnerable to manipulation by a very small pool of individuals. They've done next to nothing to address how effective and rampant brigading is (among other tactics).

What "political agenda"? If anything, the original core of the site was very left-leaning or heterodox technophiles that didn't have a home on Slashdot. The political parts of the site are now very much deadlocked in the center-right frame of the Democratic party, pretty far away from what the site once was.

Yah, it's also a clumsy plagiarization of our article: https://allthatsinteresting.com/nodosaur-dinosaur-mummy

It looks like their site is another on the list that lifts our articles and recirculates them on social media.

Ah yes, "school choice", a nice rebranding effort for privatizing another industry so Betsy Devos and other aspiring oligarchs can destroy a public good for their profit.

As someone who's been in the digital publishing space for a while, it still confounds me that they became the industry standard. Their technology just did not work in any capacity and it was widely known that their metrics were completely manipulated depending on whether or not publishers ponied up the 5 to 6 digit ransom that ComScore asked for every month.

Defensive ETFs (consumer staples, health care, utilities) along with diversified bonds. Investors also tend to migrate toward dividends during a recession. Note that health care is not as safe given the political climate.

A few funds from the above to consider: VDC, FUTY, BLV, BND, VIG

FWIW the companies responsible for those ads are Taboola, Outbrain, and Revcontent. I posted one especially egregious example last week on r/adops:

The issue is the concentration of the wealth itself, not what those who benefit from the concentration of wealth choose to do with it.
