albatrosstrophy··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Sounds like IPTV streaming
albatrosstrophy··on OpenClaw isn't fooling me. I remember MS-DOS
Kindly elaborate? Coming from someone who still uses AI mainly to draft emails and raspberry Pi as sandboxed automation project.
albatrosstrophy··on Pebble Production: February Update
If battery life really is high up your list, look up Amazfit. The Bip 6 can last up to a month as a dumb watch health tracker. It's got some decent watchfaces too. Another Amazfit product that's popular is their Helio Strap, essentially a Whoop band rip off that does not require a monthly subscription but works just as well.
albatrosstrophy··on Dropbox announces new gen server hardware for higher efficiency and scalability
Still the best cloud service for me for my Windows. But I'm interested to hear how you set up Drive and Syncthing. Is the UI as familiar to use as the the standard Windows folder?
albatrosstrophy··on I bought a £16 smartwatch just because it used USB-C
The battery is the single reason why I got the Amazfit. I use as a dumb health tracker and occasional GPS running. It easily lasts 4 weeks on a single charge. That's one less proprietary charging cable to bring on a trip.
albatrosstrophy··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
As someone who' just counting steps, I'm genuinely curious what's your average steps per day? And how many steps over 10 years?
albatrosstrophy··on Mistral OCR
And here I thought after reading the headline: finally a reliable Arabic OCR. I've never in my life found a good that does the job decently especially for a scanned document. Or is there something out there I don't know about?
albatrosstrophy··on Microsoft starts testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu
I wouldn't say it's a downgrade, but I had to run Windhawk and other mods just to make sure the start menu doesn't look like a phone's app drawer.
albatrosstrophy··on Asia Sentinel Blocked in Singapore
Interestingly while the minorities have a higher birth rate compared to the majority Chinese, the ethnic breakdown remains the exact same throughout the decades. This is because Singapore's unsaid migration policy is such that the government takes in more immigrants of Chinese ethnicity to make up for the shortfall.
albatrosstrophy··on “Tinder for Canceling Meetings”
This is obvious yet brilliant. I've been working for so long without realising that meetings are a process, not the end. I.e. they have to lead to something.
albatrosstrophy··on Could Ice Cream Possibly Be Good for You?
I would appreciate an archive link though
albatrosstrophy··on Bookshop.org survives and thrives in Amazon’s world
I'm sad Bookdepository is closing.
albatrosstrophy··on Amazon shuts newspaper and magazine subscriptions for Kindle and print
You seem to be describing an Android tablet with e-ink display. Aside from Remarkable, what else is out there worth buying?
albatrosstrophy··on Touchpad Blocker: Disable touch-pad while typing
I always have this problem. Not sure if I want the mouse pad to be totally deactivated while typing. I don't mind the pointer moving (might be a valid input anyway), but the clicking should be disabled so that the typing doesn't accidentally appear on an unintended area of the screen.
albatrosstrophy··on Primitive Technology: Iron Bacteria Cement [video]
Well these days they call it ASMR. But you're right he's one of the first to strip away all unnecessary sounds. Makes for a very therapeutic video.
albatrosstrophy··on Blood Test Only Needs a Drop and a Smartphone for Results
I have no intention of being snarky here, but perhaps someone can break it down to a layman how this might differ from Theranos' approach?
albatrosstrophy··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
I like your idea of the search engine. It's what I miss from Google. At one time (2006?) we had the option to google search only forums and discussions, and that helped me get quality answers to my queries.
albatrosstrophy··on Evolving my note-taking processes
I came across this recently, not sure if it's something that might help.

albatrosstrophy··on The Hajj Trail: historical simulation of the hajj journey
I'm not a big fan of the Saudi government, but people die in stampedes there EVERY year? As someone who follows the hajj closely, the last stampede was in 2015, and previously 2006. Not that these are insignificant, but they are a rarity considering some 2 million people descend into a small city over a 10 day period. And there have been commendable efforts to avoid a repeat.
albatrosstrophy··on Our search for the best OCR tool (2019)
How about foreign languages? I've never had one good enough for Arabic. 3 years ago when needed it for a project, no OCR I found could read a properly scanned Arabic page. Had to go on Fiverr and paid a transcriber instead.
albatrosstrophy··on Show HN: Find out where your supplements are made & sourced
Myprotein is one of bigger brands in the UK and many other countries. Wonder if it can be included?
albatrosstrophy··on Kagi search and Orion browser enter public beta
Been using Kagi too. Search results are pretty decent, and sometimes better. Problem is that I need Google almost exclusively for shopping and price comparison. Wonder if there's any other websites that can replicate this (non-US).
albatrosstrophy··on BBC to close BBC Four and children's network CBBC, move content online
Now they have to find a way to make iPlayer accessible to those residing outside the UK. They've got decent programs but an even more impressive anti VPN detector.
albatrosstrophy··on Almost all searches on my independent search engine are now from SEO spam bots
Ona tangential note, I remember a time when Google had the option to search only for 'discussions'. The results were amazing and accurate as it scoured online forums. Almost all issue I had (was following the rooting scene closely back then) were quickly resolved. Then suddenly it got removed for reasons unknown to me. Anyone knows if it's replicatable today?
albatrosstrophy··on WordPress’ market share is shrinking
I host a hobby website and use WordPress for everything. Even as an entry level user, I agree the amount of plugins are ridiculous.

But it's free and I only pay for hosting. Anyone knows what are the alternatives for someone like me?

albatrosstrophy··on Solid-state cells will cut EV charging time and increase volumetric density
Had no idea current EV batteries have progressed so far. How does this fare with Tesla?
albatrosstrophy··on Tell HN: SWIFT is not a payments transfer system
So banks refer to SWIFT for instruction on how much to transfer where? And anyone who hacks SWIFT will be able to fake fund transfer instruction?
albatrosstrophy··on Searching for Susy Thunder
That's the perfect analogy I could never think of.
albatrosstrophy··on What's the most efficient language?
I speak both a 'most efficient' language (Arabic) and a 'least efficient' (Malay).

My take ia that while Arabic is a very concise language, the learning curve is really steep. Verbs has to be conjugated to accommodate pronouns as well as tense. So in order to say 'I ate', the root word akala has to be conjugated to akaltu. Sometimes the conjugation becomes so complex that it hardly looks like its root word.

Malay meanwhile, while seemingly less efficient, is much more straight forward. There is no need to conjugate verbs. Instead to say 'I ate', you say saya (I) sudah (already) makan (eat). It's very accessible to beginners.

I think it's also interesting to see how complex a language can get in order to become efficient. Like can you combine more than pronouns and tenses in a single word to make it more efficient.

albatrosstrophy··on Keyboard lets people type so fast it’s banned from typing competitions
Tetris. There's some discussion on HN a while back on different ways of tapping the controller to make quicker turns. It will be interesting to seenwhat CharaChorder can do.
