alargemoose··on What We're Working on in Firefox
I’ve always thought the long running “Multi-Account Containers” in Firefox was a better implementation of this idea than having to switch profiles and open a whole new window, when often what I need is a tab or two for a profile other than the one I’m in. You can even configure proxies to run on a per-container basis if that’s useful. But I can certainly understand wanting to better separate what your working on then just tabs with colored indicators to remind you which is which at a glance.

Came across this right before I start laundry, looks like I have a test to run!
alargemoose··on Microsoft is giving Copilot users access to GPT-4-Turbo for free
Most recent major feature release has it now (I don’t know what they call them anymore) but it showed up in my taskbar after an update maybe just over a month ago.
alargemoose··on Rotating house goes up for sale in New Zealand
It’s not the same rotating house, but Tom Scott did a video last year that has a great 3D render of the system that designer used to facilitate their build!

alargemoose··on Tell me your most exotic selfhosted solution
Love the creativity of this, and the simplicity of just changing a light. VS a phone notification or email! I’ve got to think of ways I can apply that for myself.

> The system worked wonderfully, my partner has asked me to expand the light thing to other situations in the house and other lights. He wants something hooked to his aquarium.

Best of luck on the next project!

alargemoose··on Linux hits nearly 4% desktop user share on Statcounter
IIRC Steam OS is Arch based. So most steam decks will be running arch, and I bet those make up a hefty chunk of Linux “desktops” in the survey!
alargemoose··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
Container tabs really is the killer app for me. At work I might need to be signed in and accessing multiple Microsoft 365 admin portals across tenants. Or at home, being able to have containers for my homelab/dev Microsoft 365 account that can run entirely separately of my main browser profile.

Like you said, you can use multiple browser profiles in chromeium based browsers, but managing multiple whole windows when I just need 1 browser page seems like such a pain in comparison.

alargemoose··on Microsoft forced people to install their browser (2010)
> Maybe I'm nuts, but the start menu's web search results seem to ignore default browser settings and only open in Edge

You’re correct on that, Microsoft created a new link type ‘microsoft-edge:’, so that no matter what browser you use. Query’s from the search bar always get sent to Edge. They pulled a very similar move with Outlook where it now opens all links in edge, instead of in the users default browser. But for now, you can still toggle that setting back.

If you want windows searches to open in your default browser, you have to use https://github.com/rcmaehl/MSEdgeRedirect

alargemoose··on YouTube doesn't want to take down scam ads
Yes, but as of the last couple months. YouTube and ad blockers have been in a constant cat and mouse game where YouTube blocks users with an AD blocker from viewing content at all, until your ad blocker updates with new rules to circumvent that blocking. Trivial for you and I maybe, but less so for someone the GP described as “elderly”

Since you shared an android app, I’ll share the iOS app I use for the same purpose, called “Pi-Hole Remote”

alargemoose··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
As a Firefox user since its beta, there is? Last I checked there remain 3 browser engines left. Mozilla’s Gecko, Google’s Blink, and Apple’s Webkit. Everything else is just variants using those engines, and the vast majority of those variants (Opera, Brave, Edge, etc) are Chromium-based/using Blink. That’s not a lot of difference. If you really want to get away from chrome, your mainstream option is just Firefox. Unless you’re on a Mac, or iPhone. Where you can choose between Firefox and safari.

The 90s were a very different time my friend, prepare to be really surprised!

This is video is a wider retrospective about the game that I think is worth watching, but I linked to a clip in it from a GDC talk given by the games director. Where he states himself that only he and one other goldeneye 007 team member “had ever made a game before”

alargemoose··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
This seems like a bizarre mid-representation of GPs point. They sated she was “par for the course” for that department. Meaning everyone was bad, not just her. And found it concerning she was the only person they singled out.

alargemoose··on Japan startup develops 'Gundam'-like robot with $3M price tag
Maybe someone with deeper knowledge of Gundam can correct me, but that doesn’t look like any of the mechs from the show that I can ever recall? The arms and hands look similar, but nothing about it looks distinctly gundam. Still looks bad ass!
alargemoose··on Raspberry Pi 5 Benchmarks: Significantly Better Performance, Improved I/O
Most Cellphones are using at most 11W while under load, and will often throttle below that very quickly. While I couldn’t find exact numbers on power draw for the new Pi, the new power supply for the Pi5 is 27W. That’s a significant change in power consumption at these sizes, and would explain the recommendation for active cooling. I’ll also add that there are gaming phones that do use fans either built in or as add-ons, for active cooling for sustained loads. But that’s a niche use case/market.
alargemoose··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
I have one of these to share. My first job out of college the office had an issue where at ~3pm every day, the network would go down for a minute or two, then be slow for a while after coming back up. This as a digital marketing company, so lots of file/image/video uploads happening all the time. We ultimately determined it was the router hitting max load, crashing then rebooting and having to manage all the pending uploads. From everyone realizing it was getting close to the end of the day, and making sure their video uploads were started. The company had grown a lot in the last year, but was still using a home grade router/wap combo. I replaced it with a UniFi AP and an UniFi edgerouter. And the problem went away!

alargemoose··on Testing Intel’s Arc A770 GPU for Deep Learning
Yhe main reason is speed. For example DDR5 has a transfer rate of about 50GB/s. The GDDR6X used in GPUs has a transfer rate of about 1TB/s. Nvidia just announced H200 AI processors have HBM3e memory that they report can go as fast at 10TB/s.
