Y’all really should watch the video if you havent! I think even if you have no interest in Minecraft, or football (as others have mentioned Tomlin was a long tenured NFL coach until this year). There’s something so refreshingly earnest, and joyful about watching someone share something they’ve poured so much time and themselves into.

This is even more of a knock to Microsoft but the overheating during sleep issue can affect any windows laptop made in the last 5 or so years. The cause is nothing surface specific, it’s Microsoft enforcing “Modern standby” and blocking S3/S4 sleep states in windows. My best understanding is that some bug causes the system to stay awake after one of the periodic wake ups to check for updates/notifications that happen in modern standby.

I also had this starting a few months back. I changed the email address (really, just an alias to the same mailbox as before) and the notifications stopped.

My “trick” for this was getting a dog in my early 20s, while living in an apartment, doesn’t matter how much I wanted to sleep in, they needed to go out, so I had to get up. And without thinking I moved my sleep schedule to accommodate this. Worth it.

I went with gitea, but for the same general reasons. I like It has the option to mirror repos up to GitHub for the stuff I actually want to share with the world. Is there anything that made you choose forgejo specifically? I’m not eager to move platforms, but I know there’s more options that have popped up in the years since I first stood up my gitea instance.

Heads up that the switch 2 launched last May! (Depending on region) though they announced the next mainline Pokémon game won’t launch till 2027.

I don’t care how practical it may or may not be, this is my new favorite LLM benchmark

Do you recall what podcast? I know hearing him say this was intentional is only gonna make me frustrated, but I’m dying to hear the justification for such a bad decision.

It’s actually not. 60% opposed,+20% not sure is 80% of the population would count as a “vast majority”

I had Xfinity for 4 years and my IP changed once in that time! Now I have fiber from centurylink, and it changes anytime I need to reboot the fiber modem or my firewall. Different companies, same metro area though. That too makes me wonder about how both manage their allocations give the difference in IP assignments.

My personal favorite example of this in football

This is great. I’m working on something similar for tracking college football games from the terminal. Right now it just shows a List of active games with minimal navigation. lots of great inspiration.

It’s also common within Microsoft. I can’t speak to when/why they decide to do it, but the leads for the Microsoft Gaming (Phill Spencer) and LinkedIn [acquired 2016] (Ryan Roslansky) are both CEOs in the org chart at Microsoft.

Very good point. I know there’s a “clip” there to keep it secure, but certainly could get moved during shipping.

This came up in my recommendations yesterday and I ended up losing a few hours to videos on this channel! The one thing I didn’t understand was why at ~14:00 they’re gluing the CMOS battery down!? That battery will certainly last less than the useful life of the PC. Seems like a surprising choice.

For anyone else that, like me, doesn’t know the acronym. It stands for.

I’ve adored Jon’s writing for years, so a book is exciting! But it does bum me out a little bit that it will be “just” a book. Compared to the dynamic and multimedia formats of “Tim Tebow in the CFL” and “Football 17776”. The writing is excellent, but the dynamic and multimedia nature of his previous work will be missed. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!

I think you have this backwards. OP is saying sleep apnea is common, but we’ve only had CPAP machines to compensate for it, since the 80s. I don’t see them trying to implicate CPAP as the cause of an increase in dementia.

I’ve had one for ~7 years now and fly multiple times a year. I’ve never had it set off the metal detector, or more modern scanners at any security checkpoint in the US, or Mexico.

I know of at least 1! “Before your eyes” though i played it on a PC with a webcam, and I believe the mobile version is only available for Netflix subscribers, but I would strongly recommend it! It has a well told story with an very unique means of interaction

I would second this! The N100 is super efficient., and can often be found for around $150. I can also recommend looking at used intel “NUC” mini PCs if you’re budget conscience. I have a couple of 5th gen i5 NUCs i got for $60 that that run multiple VMs and LXC containers as part of a Proxmox cluster.

If they use a docking station, there’s a known issue with DisplayLink video output from gas spring chairs causing EMI spikes that disrupt the video signal momentarily when you sit down or stand up.

> “Surprisingly, we have also seen this issue connected to gas lift office chairs. When people stand or sit on gas lift chairs, they can generate an EMI spike which is picked up on the video cables, causing a loss of sync”

The linked support doc also links to a white paper analyzing the issue. https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/73861...

If you’d like something with a GUI for configuration, I’ve been using [Uptime Kuma](https://github.com/louislam/uptime-kuma) for a couple years now with an “internal” status page for all services in my homelab, and a “public” page for family to see the few services they would care about. I also think [Homepage](https://github.com/gethomepage/homepage) might be a good fit since it links to the services on the page, and has a little indicator dot for if it’s online or not.

The Emulator in that article, UTM SE, is a a GUI for QEMU. It’s also a MacOS app. I can confirm the “SE” version on iOS can run Linux, though I’ve not tried BSD.

UTM’s site also has a handful of pre-built images of various operating systems to make it easy to setup a VM to mess around with https://mac.getutm.app/gallery/

I can’t speak to the current state of swift on other platforms directly/in detail. But I would point to the Arc browser being built using swift for both the windows and MacOS versions. They’ve also open-sourced a number of tools they built to make that work

https://github.com/thebrowsercompany

If you use container tabs in Firefox, you can also configure proxies on a per-container basis! In case that’s useful to other people besides me.

I’ve only had a couple of times where it would have been nice to have some kind of out of band management for my homelab. So the value of this kind of hardware was pretty low to me personally. Which is why I couldn’t justify pikvm/tinypilot $300+. But for ~$50 with shipping, I couldn’t hit order on this fast enough!

> If Apple's actually rejecting this application because "they used standard platform buttons in a standard platform way", then yeah, nail them to the wall.

Apple has publicly commented that the buttons are in fact the reason for the rejection.

“Apple has since told AppleInsider on Friday that it has approved Epic's marketplace app. It has also asked Epic to fix the buttons in a future submission of the app for review.”

On the same note, also try Cold brewed coffee, it has lower acidity than hot brewed coffee.

It was an extremely bold move to do an arena tour when their last significant album release was just over 10 years ago. It’s too soon to pack a stadium for “nostalgia” to play their hits, and they just put out a new album. So it’s not like that was the plan anyway. In the time since that last popular album, the only instances of them coming up in popular culture was for one of the members repeatedly cheating on his spouses over the years.

Wonder who convinced them it was a good idea in the first place? or who tired but was unable to persuade them out of it?
