I really wish they would replace the USB-C power with a barrel jack (12V) and drop the two mini hdmi connectors and USB 2.0/USB3.0 connectors. Instead use the USB-C for everything including display, audio, peripherals, etc. I'm sure there are specific reasons they have chosen not to do this, but it's what I would prefer.
Implementing alternative protocols over USB-C is expensive. Especially for devices that don't support that natively. Clearly the SoC they're using supports HDMI, not DisplayPort, which would require a way to convert the signaling.
All in all, it would vastly increase the cost. Like, I suspect it would add $20 or possibly $30 to the cost.
Ah. I assumed that all came for free on a chipset these days.
Definitely not. Everything costs extra money to add. The question is if it's demanded by the customer. Clearly broadcoms customers didn't demand it. Adding DisplayPort and HDMI would be a pretty significant cost though, since it's two different transceivers.
It's nice to see the new Pi processor being somewhat competitive with the RK3588
Cellphones don't use fans, anybody knows why the RP5 needs one?
Most Cellphones are using at most 11W while under load, and will often throttle below that very quickly. While I couldn’t find exact numbers on power draw for the new Pi, the new power supply for the Pi5 is 27W. That’s a significant change in power consumption at these sizes, and would explain the recommendation for active cooling. I’ll also add that there are gaming phones that do use fans either built in or as add-ons, for active cooling for sustained loads. But that’s a niche use case/market.
