alanstorm··on Area 51: We Come in Peace (propose the next Stack Overflow)
I assume they'll just let it go viral. The communities that grow out of the existing user base will have some overlap with slightly less technical people. This, in turn leads to slightly less technical people being exposed to the platform as users and eventually starting communities that feature people slightly less technical than them.

Repeat until cat pictures show up.

alanstorm··on Apple & HTML5
Does anyone know what word we're supposed to use for "Web Development techniques that help ensure a consistency of experience across browsers for all users regardless of browser choice" now that "standards" means something else?
alanstorm··on Lala shut down by Apple last night, May 31st
One that was (unless I'm mistaken) never released.
alanstorm··on Lala shut down by Apple last night, May 31st
Oh, I acknowledge it's out there (ergo the tinfoil hat comment). However, to your specific examples: Pandora already agreed/decided to build an iPad/iPhone application, Zynga (creators of Farmville are in a financial position to turn down Apple's overtures, plus Zynga's business model/content is a bit of a poison pill. Going after graphic design schools would be political suicide, so it's off the table.
alanstorm··on Lala shut down by Apple last night, May 31st
When Apple bought Lala they did more than remove a future competitor. They removed a platform from the board that was making Flash (Lala used a flash interface) a relevant technology for some users. The also removed Google's best music search partner from the board. Both of the previous were potential channels where Apple could lose sales.

This is just tinfoil hat speculation, I don't have anything to back it up. However, this is the way that high level, powerful executives and a certain class of start-up founder think about markets.

alanstorm··on Mixpanel/WePay (YC S09) tech talk: PHP Inventor Rasmus Lerdorf talks about PHP
It's always fascinating to hear Rasmus talk about PHP and hear how radically different his view of the platform is when compared to common usage patterns "on the ground".
alanstorm··on Mac OS X Portal Performace
I found the setting you're talking about, and if doesn't fix this bug. The portals still render as big black holes no matter the setting (well, if you set it to 0, the portals are obscured by blue/orange flame energy)
alanstorm··on Mac OS X Portal Performace
I'm seeing the same bug here on a pretty recent (November '09) Mac Pro.
alanstorm··on Why in the world does Facebook let me do this?
I believe you meant to say "These people must have had their privacy set to 'Everyone'.
alanstorm··on Digg, Inc. Lays off 10% of Company Staff
Infrastructure to support Digg's more aggressive media and business initiatives.

Digg also has to run its own administration infrastructure while Reedit gets the benefit of being a subsidiary of Conde Nast.

Plus, of course, Digg got more funding and you have to do something with all that money :)

alanstorm··on The Omni Group has sold 5,000 copies of OmniGraffle for iPad (for $50 each).
Training people to wait isn't that much of a negative. New people who don't know to wait always show up, and the people you train to wait ensure you have a heavy secondary market (see Trade Paperback books, second run movie theaters, etc.)

alanstorm··on HP Buying Palm For $1.2 Billion
I just described the intersection of power, money, and business. (so yeah, government contracting fits in the bucket)
alanstorm··on HP Buying Palm For $1.2 Billion
When a big company throws $100,000,000.00 at something it tends to attract a lot of people (either internally or externally) who are more interested in figuring out how to acquire as much of the $100,000,000.00 as possible without worrying too much about delivering a final product in any kind of time frame.

By buying Palm HP knows that it's getting a modern mobile OS that's already in use on shipping products. For a company like HP a known quantity is better than spending money on R&D it may not be able to pull off.

alanstorm··on Five Portland startups looking to hire developers and technical talent
FWIW that Dark Horse job pops up on Craigslist about once a year.
alanstorm··on JS.Class - A Ruby Inspired JS Framework
Less context switching when you're developing web applications that require a significant amount of Javascript code. Less context switching means you get to stay in flow and get more done.
alanstorm··on Hope you reserved your iPad. Apple just ran out.
Oh not, I'll have to wait a few weeks for the next production run and suffer with owning a device that's had the inevitable Object 1.0 hardware fixes!
alanstorm··on StackOverflow.com vs.Experts-Exchange.com
Traffic reporting companies are, more or less, the credit ratings agencies of the web. Their numbers tell you something, but never what they claim to.
alanstorm··on StackOverflow.com vs.Experts-Exchange.com
My guess would be on their measurement methodology. The about page reads: "We have a diverse sample of 2,000,000+ U.S. Internet users that have given us permission to analyze the web pages they visit and ask them questions via surveys." That translates as sketchy toolbar/shareware installs and checkboxes that are checked by default.
alanstorm··on The Panic Status Board
I suppose you can achieve a certain kind of success when you turn every employee's action into an "ROIable" dollar value, but it sure makes for a miserable workplace.
alanstorm··on Anti-IRS Rant of Software Engineer who Today Flew Plane into IRS Building
I can see your point of view here, but if you're trying to "achieve political aims or to force a government to do something" it's implicit that there's going to be people around after your death to push your agenda, (or that you're going to survive whatever you plan is) to push it forward.
alanstorm··on Anti-IRS Rant of Software Engineer who Today Flew Plane into IRS Building
The militia movement in rural parts of the US, which the federal government more or less neutered after the bombing.
alanstorm··on Anti-IRS Rant of Software Engineer who Today Flew Plane into IRS Building
The most common definition of is usually along the lines of the one I found on google [http://www.google.com/dictionary?aq=f&langpair=en|en&...].

> Terrorism is the use of violence, especially murder and bombing, in order to achieve political aims or to force a government to do something.

This was a single, possibly mentally unstable, man crashing a plane into a building. He may have thought he was trying to achieve something politically or to force the government to do something, but without any larger organization behind him it seems silly to label this as a domestic terrorist attack. It's giving the guy far more credit than he deserves.

alanstorm··on What the "Black screen of death" story says about tech journalism
Tech journalism has always seemed more like sports journalism than hard news. The people doing the reporting tend to be enthusiasts for the companies (teams) they're reporting on, repeat press releases almost verbatim (play-by-play, injury reports), and often end up being less than objective when it comes to certain companies (home town sportscasters).
alanstorm··on Google changes logo - traffic to our site spikes
I've assumed half the reason Google's been on a custom logo binge is to drive users towards specific search terms and boost AdWords revenue. Show an obscure geeky thing one week to keep the baying nerd masses happy, show Michael Jackson the next.

It's nice to see "the little guy" getting a boost as well!
