alangibson··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
You don't have to convince me that you don't get it. I believe you. I'm not here to change your mind. I'm calling what you say out for the benefit of others.

Massive respect to dang et al, but a blind man can see that posts about Gaza get brigaded. We would all love to see a report on unusual activity in regards to posts on Gaza.

More whataboutism. Go find another thread. You are terrible at this.
alangibson··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
This is whataboutism. Either address the parent comment or go away.
alangibson··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
Wow, is almost like you're committed to obfuscation what Israel is doing. Couldn't possibly be that tho...

alangibson··on My Dream Productivity Device Is Done – and It's Becoming a Kit [video]
The workshop hits home. One of the decisions I made was to let my workshop grow organically around me based on what I'm doing. I started with a pile of junk tools on an Ikea table in an empty basement. By focusing on just what I needed at the time I ended up with fully equipped metal, wood and coating shops without ever consciously building them. They just sort of happened based on the needs of the next project.
alangibson··on Show HN: Draw a fish and watch it swim with the others
I drew a fish and wrote PENIS on the side. Did I beat the game?
alangibson··on Ask HN: How to Make Friendster Great?
You could probably make a decent niche business out of an ID verified, 30+ only social network. You'd need to find the killer use case though to get any kind of growth going.
alangibson··on O(n) vs. O(n^2) Startups
This is an incredibly important thing to understand. Buffet himself said it's better to be an average business in a great market that to be a great business in an average market.

alangibson··on 'We Currently Have No Container Ships,' Seattle Port Says
> My worries is what sustains the dollar primacy

Manufacturing was never part of the equation. It's somewhat ironically because of the trade deficit. Running a deficit blasts dollars out into the world. Countries put those dollars back in US banks and buy US treasuries as their reserves (hence the dollar as a reserve currency).

It's maybe the best economic deal any country has ever gotten, and the US is in the middle of blowing it all up.

alangibson··on 'We Currently Have No Container Ships,' Seattle Port Says
Sanctioning power comes from dollar primacy. When the whole world settles transactions in your currency then you have the power to switch off other countries foreign exchanges pretty easily.

The dollar has been in steady decline since the late 70's. As it's share of reserves drops, do goes the effectiveness of sanctions.

alangibson··on USPTO refuses Tesla Robotaxi trademark as "merely descriptive"
> rabidly pro Tesla

Honest question: Why? They seem to be dragging up the rear in everything but unfulfilled promises.

alangibson··on USPTO refuses Tesla Robotaxi trademark as "merely descriptive"
SpaceX is not vaporware, but that's more because of Gwynne Shotwell than Musk.
alangibson··on Judge said Meta illegally used books to build its AI
> AI doesn't actually directly copy the material it trains on, so it's not easy to make this ruling.

IANAL, but it doesn't look that hard. On first glance this is a fair use issue.

What an LLM spits out is pretty clearly transformative use. But the fact that it pulls not only the entirety of the work, but the entirety of MOST works means that the amount is way beyond what could be fair use. Plus it's commercial use. Put it together and all LLMs are way illegal.

alangibson··on Prepper Disk
The "AI Chatbot" model feels a bit like an STC from 40K.
alangibson··on Handwriting activates broader brain networks than typing
Haven't these EEG and FMRI studies proven to be mostly pseudoscience? More activity = more better sounds like an unwarranted assumption to me.
alangibson··on GPT-4.1 in the API
Try getting then to output Svelte 5 code...
alangibson··on Show HN: I made a free tool that analyzes SEC filings and posts detailed reports
I read lots of quarterly report summaries. I like what you're doing here, but you need to be aware that AI summaries are already built into many existing platforms. So don't expect to be able to monetize this as it stands.
alangibson··on How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia?
Short answer is return on investment. If I get $50 on a $75 investment when I used to get it on a $50 investment, my ROI goes down. My investors are now mad. They sell their stakes and buy into a company with a better ROI. My stock price goes down and now I'm mad.
alangibson··on Are Levi's from Amazon different from Levi's from Levi's?
Supply chains matter. There may be a good mill in whatever the textile producing region of Bangladesh is that is the preferred supplier for those making that style of shirt.
alangibson··on Google Being Forced to Sell Chrome Is Not Good for the Web
Google is emphatically not a web business. They are an advertising business. You should expect their priorities in product development to reflect that.
alangibson··on I tasted Honda's spicy rodent-repelling tape and I will do it again (2021)
He made military spec latrine odor and didn't think it was that bad. He's built different.
alangibson··on Perplexity AI submits bid to merge with TikTok
This. We now have proof positive that network effects are stronger than it repulsion at hostile changes.

On that note, Facebook going all in on AI slop is brilliant. Most users will stay at the trough for ever increasing lengths of time.

alangibson··on The Fannie and Freddie trade is back
> what this ever-popular narrative misses out

Straw man. Left commenters know perfectly well about the roles of Fannie and Freddy. The left critique is not just greedy banks. It's also government collision in pumping property values, as well as interest and fees banks make, via Fanny and Freddy.

If your opinion is that using government policy to enrich property owners and banks is socialist, then you have a very unorthodox view of socialism.

alangibson··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
That they decided to fold before even being challenged really shows you how deeply held their DEI beliefs were.
alangibson··on Tracking Down the Bulgarian Marketplace Scams
You missed their point. It's cash on the barrel head or counterparty is presumed to be a scammer. If you follow that rule you'll never be scammed.
alangibson··on Lfgss shutting down 16th March 2025 (day before Online Safety Act is enforced)
Argentina is a great analog for the UK, time shifted by century. Both former first-class economies doomed to a long decline by bad policies that elites refuse to change.
