alanchavez··on I'm 25 years old and I am lost
> If I want to make more, I take on more projects.

Or you can increase the transactions per customer. You don't have to have more projects/clients to make more money. There are only so many projects you'll be able to work on.

However, if you already have 10 - 15 customers, and you increase the # of transactions per customer, you can reach 7 figure revenue per year.

alanchavez··on A Passive Income Hacker's View on Wealth
I agree with you on some points, it's a lot of work to earn passive income and during my first year trying to earn passive income on the side I lost money and incurred in a debt of around 50K USD... but last month I finally got the hang of it, and after putting 30 hours a week after my fulltime job during my first year of trial and error, last month I grossed 10K merely working about 10 hours a week after my fulltime job... That said, it's possible and it's not in its entirety bullshit.
alanchavez··on Do the right thing, wait to get fired
I guessed the name of the company right away when you said "well known for treating developers right, but I still needed to make sure it was what I thought it was.

Could you provide a little bit more of details on how the founders disagreed with you? I'm very much interested in knowing more about it.

alanchavez··on Google's summer interns make for noisy neighbors
I read in the yelp reviews that they were singing in the middle of the nights, and throwing out parties during the week.

The apartment complex should write lease violations to offenders (or Google)

alanchavez··on [dead]
they could have used a taser
alanchavez··on Ask HN: Will you help a junior developer in need of short-term employment?
Also.. you should drop the "short term" employers like commitment.
alanchavez··on 15-year-old girl invents flashlight powered by the heat of your hand
I think the comments were removed, but one of them said that she should build a body-powered vibrator and she would be millionaire.
alanchavez··on Ask HN: Will you help a junior developer in need of short-term employment?
if you deliver on time, you deliver on budget...
alanchavez··on Ask HN: Will you help a junior developer in need of short-term employment?
I never said you didn't deserve a job, that's an invisible script of yours... all I'm saying is that you're doing it wrong by focusing in the wrong things.

Nowadays telling you the truth is being arrogant and rude, oh well... good luck to you boy, I'm not the one in need for a job.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: Will you help a junior developer in need of short-term employment?
Well that's actual advice boy, it's up to you if you still want to think that someone is going to hand you a job just because you need one.
alanchavez··on Ask HN: Will you help a junior developer in need of short-term employment?
I'm going to tell you what other people haven't told yet.

Nobody cares whether you went to App Academy or learned how to code in your mom's garage.

Nobody cares if you have enough skill to rewrite the linux kernel from scratch.

If you want a job, you have to understand hiring managers needs and fears, and most importantly you need to know how to address them.

If you know how to get things done on time, and on budget then you're hirable.

While it shows passion that you built yet-another-asteroids-port it's irrelevant for the most part.

and this is coming from one 25 yo software engineer without a college degree making an income way above average and hardly 2 years of real experience.

alanchavez··on 15-year-old girl invents flashlight powered by the heat of your hand
I came here to see if anyone else noticed the sexists comments under the article, what a shame.

However it's not difficult to find sexists pricks in tech.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: What podcasts will make me a better software engineer?
I don't think podcasts alone will make you a better software engineer.

Most software engineer spend countless hours perfecting their craft, and forget about soft skills that will make you more "likeable" and will help you advance further your career.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: Is my Idea profitable? Hint: semantic web crawler for lyrics
So if I crawl lyrics website, am I violating their copyright?

I'm not displaying the lyrics, I'm just matching lyrics with user generated content to come up with song recommendations.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: What is the best way to find a job in Bay Area?
If you don't have a large professional (not social) network, then you must start building one.

Have you tried

http://careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs ??

That's how I found my dream job! and I'm hunted by in-house recruiters all the time, so I'd say that's a good place to start.

When I registered, it required an invitation, if it stills requires one, shoot me an email (see my profile) and I'll happily send one your way.

alanchavez··on How LinkedIn penalizes its users
I've seen that the people worth connecting with, you just have to google their name, and some random bits of information that LinkedIn gives "for free" and voila, no need for linked in.
alanchavez··on Ask HN: How do you build an audience?
Start collecting your visitor's emails, that's how you start building an audience.

Forget about SEO right now, you don't want really want more traffic, you want conversion rate.

I know people who own websites with hundreds of thousands of visitors per month, but almost 0% conversion rate.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: How do you build an audience?
I hope you didn't list that in order of importance.

First you have to find a niche. If your product/book/website/blog/whatever is the only one out there, it's a red flag because it might mean that there's no need for whatever you offer.

A product will never create a need, you create a product out of people's need.

Try to look for something that already exists, and you know you can make it better, and pitch whatever you built to the your competitors dissatisfied users, and there you go, you have an audience.

Then you can start looking into metrics/analytics and finally into SEO.

alanchavez··on Why Doesn't Anyone Give a Crap About Freedom Zero? (2008)
Yeah, I know that. The vast majority of people don't.
alanchavez··on Why Doesn't Anyone Give a Crap About Freedom Zero? (2008)
That's the difficult part, not for me, but for the vast majority of people who don't even know what a DMG is.
alanchavez··on Why Doesn't Anyone Give a Crap About Freedom Zero? (2008)
It's actually easier, unless you're trying to do a clean install.

For some weird reason Apple made it utterly difficult to be able to make a clean install.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: Frontend eye for the backend guy?
I'd say JavaScript instead of jQuery.

Before jQuery going mainstream there was Spry, and then it faded away.

If jQuery ever goes away, the good ol' JavaScript will still be there for us.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: What DRM Free really means?
I'm not shouting, I'm highlighting the fact that it's not my intention to break anybody's trust.

Morality has little to no place in DRM laws.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: What DRM Free really means?
No, I'm not.
alanchavez··on Ask HN: What DRM Free really means?
If I weren't taking responsibility myself, I wouldn't be asking this question, don't you think?

Precisely because I DO NOT want to break the trust (nor the law) is the reason that I'm asking the question.

alanchavez··on Ask HN: What DRM Free really means?
That's what I thought, I've actually been thinking to allow the e-book to be downloaded only once a day and since it's a digital file, the person who downloaded the file has 24 hours to delete it from their system.

Obviously there's no way to know that the file has been deleted, just as there's no way to know if a real book has been photocopied.

But I'm just sharing an e-book once per day, just as if I were lending a real book to thousands of people once at a time.

alanchavez··on Fitbit for Dogs
Do you own a dog? If you do, have you watched your dog while it is asleep?

Just as humans, dogs go through sleep phases and even though humans have longer sleep phases; dogs have a REM phase. Once dogs get to the REM phase they're in a deep stage of sleep and the sound of an ambulance or foot traffic will not wake them up as easily as you think.

I've seen it hundreds of times throughout different breeds of dogs. I used to work part time for a vet when I was a teenager.

alanchavez··on Fitbit for Dogs
Dogs as humans have selective hearing.

Do you wake up when there's an ambulance passing by while you're sleeping?

What if you change your statements to:

1) Detecting an abrupt change in sleep patterns in mammals is useful. 2) Dogs are mammals.

Therefore, detecting an abrupt change in sleep patterns in dogs is useful.

alanchavez··on Fitbit for Dogs
that's way too much elaborated for a lazy person whose job is walking a dog.
alanchavez··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a job offer rescinded?
I'm just updating the post... the company didn't rescind their offer, and I'm happily employed now!!
