al_ramichon Show HN: BBC vs. Fox vs. CNN

Hello, this is Al. We have built Coronavirus Knowledge Graph app that takes some of the top news publishers and creates a knowledge graph based on the entities/topics related to the pandemic. This is a research app we are making available freely shortly. Any feedback is very welcome.

al_ramichon Show HN: Coronavirus News Knowledge Graph

Side project we did with BBC as a free research tool for Coronavirus related topics built as a Knowledge Graph. Currently, it processes all current and historic news from BBC, CNN, Fox, and DW published on the pandemic but we will add others soon. Any comments are very welcome. this is new and not shared yet.

al_ramichon What would it take to build a tower as high as outer space?

Discovery of superhero material that is light and strong like nothing we have right now. Somehow I feel that making rockets more reusable and cheaper is going to win short term.

al_ramichon Why stress causes people to overeat

so true. Stress leads to burn out state which has to be one of the biggest productivity issues. The body and mind go into this odd state where they are looking for instant small boosts to feel good. Food is an obvious feel-good with many obvious 'next stage' boosts that people opt to get 'rewards' from. You could write the same article about alcohol, excessive gaming or excessive social media consumption. Personally, keeping an eye on the level of burn out is one of the most important lessons so far.

al_ramichon It's Official: Open Plan Offices Are Now the Dumbest Management Fad of All Time

Well, the noise and distractions caused by not being able to isolate yourself for tasks that require concentration for longer periods should be enough to have people dislike open-plan workspaces. For tasks that require concentration, the only way seems to be noise canceling headphones. I wonder if we will get to a point where VR/AR collaborative spaces will provide the next phase of co-working. It certainly would open up options for working from anywhere and for organizations to hire anywhere and still have teams to work in a similar way to being in an office.

Interesting application as the Space radiator material as opposed to an infrared invasibility jacket.

was thinking the same. not sure why tracking the boosters individually would be useful to most. I suppose the competitors might be interested.

al_ramichon From laboratory in far west, China’s surveillance state spreads quietly

Curious if the phone scanning devices require the user to provide their pin or if they have the ability to bypass phone access security (I suspect not).

al_ramichon The 10:1 rule of writing and programming

Really interesting. Thank you for sharing. I imagine that on average most things creative or scientific need 10 versions or so to get to the final stage. On a separate note, wonder whether you would classify programming as a science or creative work, a mix of both or something else...

al_ramichon Building a Self-Healing Operating System (2007) [pdf]

I suppose we have seen advancements in this area in the past 10 years since this was published. Most applications and OS will at least attempt to recover all your work. Think a grey area still seems to be around significant upgrades to OSs when things can go seriously wrong. A recent upgrade of my Mac laptop collapsed spectacularly with much time spent on repairing the damage.

al_ramichon Ask HN: How can someone get their work on ProductHunt without knowing a Hunter?

Quite new to Product Hunt myself but I believe you can publish/launch the product yourself or for more impact, you can reach out to some of the top hunters to see if they want to collaborate.

al_ramichon Roboticst at OSU uses performing arts to make robots more social

Did a bit more looking into this and it seems to be the case. The issue is with organisations that have historically captured info about EU citizens which even if they stopped access to new EU users, still makes them need to comply with GDPR. So preventing access might also need to be supported by removing any EU user data from your system. Discussed in detail below.

al_ramichon Roboticst at OSU uses performing arts to make robots more social

interesting that if you believe "David" giving an interview to the Sun, there could be fines even if websites prevent access to the EU citizens

al_ramichon Roboticst at OSU uses performing arts to make robots more social

First time seeing the 'inaccessible if coming from the EU' message. Wonder if there are any stats out there to break down how many non-EU websites are opting to stop the traffic vs complying with the GDPR.

al_ramichon New organic battery can operate for decades

Interesting comparison against electric car battery benchmarks where 15% for 150,000km seems to be achievable (if on average 15k is done annually that would be approx 1.5% capacity loss compared to 3% for the new organic battery). https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1110149_tesla-model-s-b...

al_ramichon Ask HN: What are the most interesting emerging fields in computer science?

The hype is where the money is and if you look at the established emerging tech, AI and IoT are projected to get most funding and create most disruption in the years to come https://uk.pcmag.com/feature/94662/blockchain-and-robots-buz...

The cutting-edge emerging tech I feel will be in the way we engage with data and tech and Augmented Intelligence (assistive) will see huge advancements.

al_ramichon Traceability on the Internet

Not sure how end-to-end encryption would protect the end user from getting SPAM email, being trolled on the SM, seeing fake news or equivalent. Most of the issues come from the fact that there are no universal quality or identity checks for the information being published online. Perhaps unique/traceable identifier should only be required when you are creating content that others can see.

al_ramichon Traceability on the Internet

It would make a lot of sense. The fact that currently there isn't a single unique identifier per online user allows for an unregulated environment. Obviously, there are things like IPs, the mobile device identifies (phone number...) or even single-sign-on platforms but the bottom line is that there isn't something that is unique per user and platform independent. Should there be a unique credential per user just to access anything online? From the security perspective, you would definitely say yes but you could also imagine that this could be taken too far

al_ramichon A more realistic route to autonomous driving

agree but it would have to be regulated with virtual/dedicated road lines relatively high up to prevent noise/light blocking issues. if centrally managed, the issues you describe could be minimized.

al_ramichon A more realistic route to autonomous driving

electric would be the way it goes and you could argue that flying drones flying at a constant speed could be more economical than a self-driving car limited by the current road infrastructure.

al_ramichon A more realistic route to autonomous driving

Going a bit controversial here but will self-driving cars be disrupted before they even take off. The big factor that I feel will impact how autonomous travel will evolve in the future is drone taxies/cars. Providing there is a change in the regulation to support self-driving flying cars/drones, the big advantage is that there would be no existing rules created for human driving (road signs, traffic lights...) to adhere to. A centralized system could calculate the best route to fly someone from A to B without the complexities that self-driving cars have to solve. And flying would clearly be much faster as well. Dubai, for example, is already testing, what comes after will be interesting.
