al452··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
> How are restaurant tips charged? The card is run, and then you add a tip

That sounds bizarre and backwards to me! I guess we live in different countries/regions with different conventions. So it probably depends on what people do in South Africa.

al452··on Read and understand code faster with programming ligatures in Fira Code font
I had every one of those concerns too. In spades. And then I actually tried using it for real, and none of the concerns turned out to cause any problem in practice.

(Why would I try using something I was confident would make me less productive? Because I felt was in a rut, and was trying out disruptive changes to my workflow. For example the same day, I switched all my calculator tools to RPN. That's not gone badly either.)

al452··on Read and understand code faster with programming ligatures in Fira Code font
I've been using this in IntelliJ IDEA for about a month.

The experience reminds me of adopting an anti-aliased font for coding, for the first time (many years ago). First half an hour of unfamiliarity and skepticism, then it just seems very natural, and reading code feels smoother and easier and more productive.

I absolutely cannot stand code in non-monospaced fonts, so I don't think there are any alignment problems. (The look of Fira Mono / Fira Code isn't really to my taste though, so I'm hoping for the same things to start popping up in other fonts too!)

al452··on How the Airlines Became Cartels
Summary of this utterly incoherent article: airlines are terrible because <insert some random claims about economic history>, and we can fix them by <insert some randomly chosen regulations we could invent>.
al452··on Arturo Di Modica has a point
This entire comment thread, more or less, imagines a much clearer distinction between advertising and art, and for that matter between the commercial world and art, than exists or has ever existed.
al452··on Libor: Bank of England implicated in secret recording
The LIBOR rates were constructed by the BBA phoning around the banks, and reporting an average of the numbers they came up with. How would the BoE "explicitly" change that? By telling the BBA to lie? I don't imagine you'd find that "fair".
al452··on Performance of Solaris' ZFS LZ4 Compression
Meh. Whatever one calls "real", "incompatible with everyone else" was the real point, and it's a strong one.
al452··on Epoll is broken – part 2/2
"Using these toolkits is like trying to make a bookshelf out of mashed potatoes." - Jamie Zawinski
al452··on Apple Paid $0 in Taxes to New Zealand, Despite Sales of $4.2B
As far as I have been able to tell from the behaviour of those who believe this kind of thing, the correct authority to consult to determine ethical tax liability is the sub-editor in charge of writing headlines for whichever newspaper one reads.
al452··on Apple Paid $0 in Taxes to New Zealand, Despite Sales of $4.2B
$4.2 billion in sales, subject to 15% GST, suggests $630 million in tax revenue to the NZ government. Not a bad tax take from an operation that runs out of another country.
al452··on The Unix-Haters Handbook (1994) [pdf]
> the need to connect to a remote X11 server

You mean client, not server.

(ducks for cover)

al452··on New Zealand Will Give You a Free Trip If You Agree to a Job Interview
Because it just ain't true?

Age discrimination exists, but it's not really the reason there are so few 55 year olds in software today. That's simply because very very few people in the 1980s took up a career in software. The industry was orders of magnitude smaller!

I've worked in multiple places that had absolutely zero problem hiring people in their 50s - when we were lucky enough to find people that experienced.

al452··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
Almost this. I'm 6'2", can't sit in the NB without bumping my head on the roof bars when closed. But had a 1995 NA for about 5 years and that was just incredibly comfortable. Could fit a remarkable amount in the boot too.
al452··on The top international cities for software engineers
The common English word "foreign" has that meaning and is perfectly well available in American English. But it seems like Americans think it's rude or insensitive to say "foreign" and say "international" (whose primary meaning is different) instead. I am interested, what's going on?
al452··on Wikipedia bans Daily Mail as 'unreliable' source
Those of us in the UK have always known the Daily Mail is about as reliable as any other rubbish tabloid, i.e. not at all. It's always seemed strange that it has a much higher reputation in other countries. Hopefully that will change.
al452··on The top international cities for software engineers
Regarding the headline: why do Americans say "international" when they actually mean "not American"?

al452··on Ask HN: What's the best aha moment you've had?
Yes, the fundamental reason is conservation of energy. If there is not enough energy stored in the rocket's fuel to escape the gravity well, it doesn't matter whether you expend it all at once (and fail to reach escape velocity) or expend it over time as in your example. "Escaping the gravity well" from any point takes a well-defined amount of energy (which we call "gravitational potential energy") so your fuel use strategy won't help you in the end.
al452··on A Map of the World Won Japan’s Prestigious Design Award
For one thing there is massive distortion of relative distances in southern parts... New Zealand or Australia to Antarctica is something like 4 hours flight, not halfway across the planet.
al452··on A Message to the Apple Community in Europe
"In the UK"??? Check your geography.
al452··on Goldman Sachs Dumps Numerical-Ranking System for Employees
Worked there as a tech guy for 6 years. That is exactly how things worked. I very belatedly realised that the traders were right all along.
al452··on Why Are Tenured Philosophy Professors Unhappy?
Atheists aren't especially unhappy, so this completely fails as an explanation.
