akyoan··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
Hiring people is not autopilot. You can hire a CEO for example.
akyoan··on The Google home page is 500K
People googling Google, which is a lot.
akyoan··on Seconds before a 6.2 earthquake rattled California, phones got a warning
I'm not sure if SMS and email are ever considered urgent enough for this purpose. The alert is sent out seconds before, it's either a loud and unusual sound or you might get to read/answer after it actually hits.

i.e. it'd be useless.

akyoan··on Apache Log4j bug: China’s industry ministry pulls support from Alibaba Cloud
Absolutely shameless. I’m glad that they’re doing this in the complete open instead of painting themselves as the good guys (unlike, ahem, other western countries)
akyoan··on Tirana Prosecution to Investigate Alleged Data Leak of More than 630k Albanians
I’m curious, why?
akyoan··on US returns $154M in bitcoins stolen by Sony employee
I have no proof here, but don't underestimate the power of a rock near one’s delicate areas. It's easier to get a key by just asking politely.
akyoan··on Germany is closing half of its reactors before the end of the year
You can’t start up the equivalent of “half a country’s nuclear reactors” in 2 weeks. For this to happen you must already have an excess of renewables, which they obviously don’t have.

What will happen is that more coal will be burned because coal always works and is instantly available; Sun and wind isn’t.

akyoan··on Tell HN: AWS appears to be down again
> Honestly my server at home has more uptime than US-East-1

Is this not antagonistic? It's pointless to make these statements, so your parent comment pointed it out. Go downvote the first one instead.

akyoan··on TinyVG: A challenger to the throne of vector graphics
The problem I encounter while developing occasionally is that I encounter a series of errors and in the end you stop wanting to report the 5th bug of the day and just want to fix things the best way you can. Sometimes that attempt goes sour, sometimes it gets me out of the problem in 5 minutes.

> if only reported

Reporting bugs can be super time consuming, especially if your project is large and the maintainer has a high bar for bug reports (e.g. "provide a codesandbox link"). I can't spend 20 minutes reporting a bug that will be auto-closed in 6 months when I can attempt fixing it instead, especially if I'm annoyed at the tool already. This used to happen a lot with browsers and nowadays it happens with build tools and libraries.

akyoan··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer (2019)
The worst offenders for this are package bundlers. Like when they remove/change features and don't have the decency to leave a note saying what change and how to fix it. There are dozens of issues and StackOverflow questions dedicated to obscure errors that make no sense — if you're lucky to find them. Sometimes even specific errors come out but they don't make any sense. Could anyone add a link to these? No.
akyoan··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
> the northern League wanting to break off from Italy and form another country

This isn't the 90's, that stuff died down when we all united against the africans. [1] There's no separatist movement in Italy other than in fringe groups on Facebook. Definitely much less than "Texas wanting to secede" anyway.

Supporting Taiwan is really not a question of opposing local separatist movements (at least in Italy) as much as just "losing China" and all that it'd entail.

This video is satire, racist POV

akyoan··on Power imbalances and sex
> It would be irresponsible to not talk about the role that race plays in this conversation.

Hard disagree. What you're saying reminds me of Seinfeld’s "Not that there's anything wrong with that" suffix and "I'm not racist, but" starter. You don't have to mention things that are obvious, you're just making the conversation awkward.

I fail to see how talking about race (keep reading) changes anything about the the concept at hand: People want you because you have "the Thing, and maybe only the Thing."

"Being an Asian woman" itself can be the Thing, that's still covered by the article.

akyoan··on How I learned to stop worrying and push to master
> If you're NASA

I don’t think it's fair to pick something extra-ordinary to respond to the article. Obviously "no worries" doesn't apply if the stakes are high.

akyoan··on How I learned to stop worrying and push to master
> Put all new code behind feature flags

How is that even possible? A comma change in a feature can break things, are you going to put that change behind a feature flag?

"New code" isn't just "new files/functions", so it's not always feasible to keep it behind flags, unless you use a "copy on write" methodology to all code.

akyoan··on Power imbalances and sex
Are you serious right now? Do you think white women are not fetishized by black men and Asian men? I live in Asia and let me tell you something…

Both your comment and the parent are racist because you’re applying common issues to “white men” while they’re really not limited by race in any way whatsoever. Whether this or that race is fetishized by which race is completely irrelevant in the context of the article.

akyoan··on Power imbalances and sex
I’m not sure what your point is. You seem to have the Thing the article mentions and appear to be in the group of people who don’t like the game.

What I read here is just that you’re just as discriminatory as the people who you complain about. I don’t see any mentions of race in the article and what it describes applies to most cultures and every race.

Stop being racist and maybe people will stick around after receiving the Thing.

akyoan··on Reddit files to go public
Backend sure, it’s more stable.

What’s on the front is inexcusable though. This is not just dark patterns: shit straight up doesn’t work. Good engineers don’t ship that.

The video player has sucked for years so much that I built a service that fetches the raw hls URL and plays that directly in the browser. Night and day. How do you mess up something that works out of the box?

akyoan··on Apple removes references to CSAM from its child safety webpage
Yes but no one wants the finger pointed at themselves. Even if innocence is proven, someone will go through your files and you will have to deal with the law.

The recourse should be before this reaches the law.

akyoan··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
How to Lie with Charts 101
akyoan··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
Why would they do that when HTTP1.1 is perfectly fine and available?

That will be the explanation, I’m not too optimistic.

akyoan··on Apple charges 2X more to fix a Steel Watch as the same aluminium one
> I get that it’s a fashion thing

From what you’re saying, it doesn’t look like it. Fashion trends are not meant to be sensible. Plenty of people throw money at stuff they can’t afford. Look at poor people wearing Supreme and Prada.

If I buy a 10k watch it’s because it’s in my budget and will probably buy another one later or replace it with a Rolex.

akyoan··on Cultures where men and women don’t speak the same language (2017)
I feel this in my own life, as an European grown up mostly around my mother, sister, and younger female cousins. My father lived abroad for long periods of time.

Women nowadays keep assuming I'm gay due to my mannerisms.

akyoan··on Deno Joins TC39
Node is not "moving to ESM", they don't even plan to deprecate CJS. They will continue to support both for the foreseeable future. Their docs still use `require` in a lot of places even though ESM has been enabled on stable releases for almost 2 years.
akyoan··on Show HN: We open sourced our new Mac developer setup script
"I cannot trust your competence as a developer if you can't build your compiler in assembly."

These setups are useful because:

- not everyone needs to start from scratch every time

- they share one’s known-how through their configuration

Even if I rarely use boilerplates and such, often they're good resources to see how a specific problem has been fixed.

Also if they're done well they lower the barrier of entry considerably. See create-react-app where you can start developing something serious in React without starting from an empty index.html and glue everything together.

akyoan··on Ask HN: What Happened to Borland?
We found who's maintaining all of this COBOL code after all. They must have a lot of legacy-systems developers and can probably market themselves for expensive consultancy.
akyoan··on Ask HN: What Happened to Borland?
> Microsoft OS slide to irrelevance

I wouldn't call 75% of desktop share "irrelevant". Tablets are still 20 times less common than PCs. *

* data from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_syste...

akyoan··on Defensive CSS
Yes the sensible approach of loading a whole layout, drawing, and interaction library before showing anything at all on screen. Why has only Google thought of that?
akyoan··on How do you fix a stroad?
European here: While I don't advocate for stroads, they do certainly look cool to "America lovers" all around the world.

> Has anyone ever put a picture of a stroad up as art

Nobody puts up little ugly streets of Milan as art either, but stroads in Vegas and LA are certainly photographed quite a bit.

akyoan··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
Touché. I'm not sure how much the difference in pricing is a direct consequence of consumer protection laws or just import fees, etc.

For the record, an iPhone 13 Pro costs EUR 951 before taxes in France, which means it's 7% more expensive than the US. However with taxes it's USD 1,303, which is probably quite a bit more than any after-tax price in the US.

akyoan··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
Nah, they just read the umpteenth "American company fined by EU country" and assume it's not fair for the company. What they don't realize is how good customer protections laws are in Europe compared to most of the world.

The fact that $1000+ purchases are only covered for a year in the US for example is kind of a joke (in the EU it's 2 years)
