aketchum··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2021)
VIVA Finance | Atlanta, GA | Full-Time | Full-Stack Engineer | https://viva-finance.com

VIVA Finance is a FinTech Startup focused on building a more inclusive financial system. We offer fair and affordable personal loans to working Americans using an alternative underwriting model that is based on employment--instead of credit history. Our rates are as much as 35 times lower than traditional lenders, which has fueled extremely high customer satisfaction and explosive growth (800% year over year for Q2). We just closed on a $6.2 million Series A funding round to invest in our team, technology, and marketing to expand our footprint across the country. If you are interested in working for a high-growth startup with a strong commitment to positive social impact, we would love to talk to you!

VIVA’s Engineering team is looking to hire Full-Stack Software Engineers to help us as we continue to scale. Our website is written with Vue and Tailwind, hosted on AWS with S3 and CloudFront CDN. Our backend is written in NodeJs running on AWS Lambda and orchestrated by the Serverless Framework. We are looking for someone who is interested in working at all layers of the tech stack, be that configuring CSS on the website, adding DevOps functionality to our CICD pipeline, or updating the decision logic for our underwriting model.

If interested in applying or hearing more about the job, reach out to CEO, Jack Markwalter with a resume via email: jack@viva-finance.com

aketchum··on Show HN: I built an AI art installation at home generating new pieces on the fly
couldn't you use something like style transfer to take your own artwork's style and apply it to the generated art?
aketchum··on Illinois first state to tell police they can't lie to minors in interrogations
This is absolutely bonkers
aketchum··on My Son, the Organ Donor
I'm sorry, what? Are you saying aren't an organ donor because your family would not get paid for it? How would you value the organs? Do you believe having the ability to pay for an organ makes one more morally deserving to live?
aketchum··on Spreadsheet is a software development paradigm
Hexidecimal values will often get converted to scientific notation if there is an "e".
aketchum··on Ask HN: What do you see as the current non-valley startup hubs?
Incredibly biased because I work at a start-up in Atlanta, but especially in the FinTech space there is a strong community here.
aketchum··on Ask HN: Is a Master's in CS worth it?
I am 80% done with OMSCS and very much agree with this sentiment. Every day I believe less and less that this will have an impact on my career, but I got to work on a whole bunch of interesting stuff and learn things that I probably would not have pushed myself to learn without the structure of the program.
aketchum··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
It seems strange to me that the article and some of these comments are talking about how the scarcity is artificial. Of course the scarcity is artificial! Magic Cards, Pokemon cards, sports trading cards, Supreme merch, yeezy shoes... all of these business models are based on artificial scarcity. There are time honed methods to figure out exactly how many to sell to keep the market thriving without flooding it.

Most of the examples I listed are also easily reproducible (how hard would it be to make a replica NBA rookie card with the right printer?), yet the fakes are worthless while the "Authentic" ones are work tens-hundreds of thousands of dollars.

aketchum··on Surviving an Execution
Leaving aside the moral question of the death penalty, the use of lethal injection seems insane to me. Why don't they just use nitrogen suffocation?

aketchum··on FedEx shipping damage creates fractured artworks
The thing I love about modern art is that initial instinctive reaction of "Anyone could do this!". I have absolutely zero training in art so this might be a infantile opinion, but I am delighted by the pieces that makes me realize "Anyone could do this, but no-one did until now."

All that to say, I really like this series of works.

aketchum··on I prepared for a decade to graduate in CS in three months
yes and yes
aketchum··on I prepared for a decade to graduate in CS in three months
Im doing OMSCS at GaTech and once you graduate you just have a Masters degree from The Georgia Institute of Technology, it says nothing about online or in person or anything. My resume just says Masters Degree, in progress. People asked about it during my last round of interviews but nobody seemed to care it was online.
aketchum··on Stripe’s payments APIs: the first ten years
Ive been very happy with Dwolla and their level of support is wonderful. Our small team gets a slack channel with our rep and a few others and they respond quickly.
aketchum··on An update to storage policies across your Google Account
While I would normally agree with you, Google has advertised unlimited, free storage forever for things like photos and email. They should not have made that promise and I understand why they are breaking the promise now, but if you break a promise it seems reasonable for people to be irate about it.
aketchum··on AWS releases Glue Databrew, a visual ETL tool
I don't have any write ups but off the top of my head I remember issues with data type casting from ddb -> athena via glue. If a ddb number type was an int in one item and a float in a different Item, glue transformed it to a struct ( something like struct(long:null,double:50.50) and struct(long:20,double:null)). The suggested fix of a cast function didn't work.
aketchum··on AWS releases Glue Databrew, a visual ETL tool
I am a big fan of AWS and am happily running our entire tech stack with their services for a very reasonable price. That said, Glue is an absolute dumpster fire of a product. My team and I have wasted countless hours trying to wrangle a DynamoDB -> Glue -> Athena -> Quicksight pipeline and Glue refused to cooperate (we ended up building our own DDB to SQL pipeline after finally giving up on Glue). Hopefully this will increase the usability of the Glue product and actually enable out of the box ETL.
aketchum··on Up and Then Down: The lives of elevators (2008)
I think about this so often when I am waiting for elevators in high rise buildings. Thanks for posting this! I will definitely put my money where my mouth is and see how hard it really is!
aketchum··on Animal behavior during a solar eclipse
I drove 2 hours to get into the path of totality for the 2017 eclipse. I just want to reiterate to anyone with a similar opportunity how worthwhile it is to make the trek to be in the path of totality. I had many friends that figured they would just watch from home because "it is going to be 98% eclipsed here". Let me dispel that logic. Anything less than total eclipse is basically unnoticeable, while the total eclipse is achingly beautiful and unique.

As to the article, I noticed many of the strange animal behaviors. Night time bugs came out and birds took to the skies in a hurry. It was quite the experience.

aketchum··on Mexican states are moving to ban the sale of junk food to children
I spent quite a bit of time in Nogales, Mexico and ate as many tacos as I could get my hands on. Across the board they were far healthier than anything I can get from a fast food restaurant in the states. The tacos in (Sonora) Mexico generally consist of: Corn tortilla, meat, cabbage, onions, cilantro. Optional hot salsa.
aketchum··on Show HN: Handwritten.js – Convert typed text to realistic handwriting
How much data is needed to train the model to replicate a specific person's handwriting? Could this recreate my hand writing with less than a page of notes in my own handwriting?
aketchum··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
I love this project! Have you tried actually completing any of the generated workouts?

How do you calculate overfitting for something like this? I know how you would do so with a more traditional supervised learning model with numerical inputs/outputs but NLP still seems a little like black magic to me since I haven't dived into a project using it myself. Is it just a comparison of similarity between generated posts and all posts in the training set? How do you calculate how "close" an output is to an input?

aketchum··on AWS Snowcone
great examples of why to use this over "just" a large external hard drive in a case. Thanks for the insight!
aketchum··on AWS Snowcone
I must not interact with big enough data to understand, but what is the point of this? I have watched/read several of the Snow product descriptions from AWS and I am still not quite sure I understand the point.

It seems like a way to sync local big data to AWS cloud storage for data that is too large to realistically transfer via the internet. So is this simply a sneakernet external harddrive because physically shipping an 8TB hard drive has better bandwidth than using the internet?

I would love it if someone could explain a couple of use cases for the Snow family of products to someone that has never had to handle 100 GB of data much less terabytes.

aketchum··on Advice to new managers: don't joke about firing people
Slightly related. My father owned a restaurant when I was growing up and employed local high school students as dishwashers. I was young, probably around 12 and I was at a summer camp that our dishwasher at the time was also attending and I made a joke to him about getting him fired. Ill never forget how mad my father was with me when he found out and how sternly he reprimanded me. He stressed early on with me that when you have control over people's livelihoods you never ever abuse the power dynamic that comes with that position.
