akerr··on Show HN: Menu Bar Calendar on macOS
Itsycal is also free and does more. Install from Homebrew or https://www.mowglii.com/itsycal/
akerr··on UTM – Virtual Machines for iOS and macOS
I use this to run pi-hole on Debian on my old Mac mini which also hosts our network Time Machine.
akerr··on People are paying to break printers with sledgehammers in smash rooms
PC LOAD LETTER???
akerr··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
I use Vinegar[1] with Safari on all platforms which provides HTML5 video (and PiP etc) but with the other YouTube features. I have the Subscriptions page bookmarked so I get a reverse chronological list from my favourite creators. You could also use channel RSS to do this without an account.

akerr··on An open-source mouse and trackpad utility for Mac
I'm still using Logitech Options+ when I dock my MacBook Air into my big screen and use an MX Anywhere. Last I checked, none of these utilities enable click-and-hold to pan.
akerr··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
I code widgets in JavaScript using Scriptable on my iPhone. There's full development environments (e.g. Pythonista), web servers (WorldWideWeb), virtual machines (UTM) etc without jailbreaking. Otherwise, SSH and VNC let me access the best machine for a particular job while using a very reliable phone that will receive years of upgrades.
akerr··on I found the best anagram in English (2017)
That’s a palindrome but a good EP by Soundgarden (Nude Dragons).
akerr··on Using solar farms to generate fresh desert soil crust
I’d much prefer to see renewable energy used to desalinate water to irrigate deserts than wasted effort creating bases on the moon or Mars.
akerr··on Show HN: Apple Notes Liberator – Extract Notes.app Data and Save It as JSON
Why not just use the built-in Shortcuts to export to your preferred format?
akerr··on Polyamory is getting slivers of legal recognition in America
The slippery slope people were right!
akerr··on Modeling my Grandpa with 3D Photogrammetry (2021)
Scaniverse from Niantic is (really) free on iOS and makes this almost trivial: https://scaniverse.com

Apple’s Object Capture looks impressive too: https://developer.apple.com/augmented-reality/object-capture...

akerr··on MiracleCast – Wifi-Display/Miracast Implementation
This would be handy as an OBS output. I wonder how well it builds and runs on macOS?
akerr··on Ask HN: Good resource on writing web app with plain JavaScript/HTML/CSS?
I can recommend https://devdocs.io for reference and https://glitch.com for prototyping (and hosting if your needs are modest!) as well some good sample projects.
akerr··on NASA finds super-emitters of methane
Yeah, let's name these super-emitters!
akerr··on Kathleen Booth, the inventor of assembly language, has died
Ada, you mean?
akerr··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ads and trackers blocking DNS server
Or you could buy your kids some decent games rather than training them to suffer through ads or pay-to-win in-app purchases? This is the best feature of Apple Arcade in my opinion.
akerr··on Announcing KataOS and Sparrow
If only there was some way to search for existing project names… To be fair, Sparrow hasn’t existed for a while… sigh.
akerr··on Announcing KataOS and Sparrow
Same here! Surely they could release it as open source?
akerr··on Replace the “very” in your sentence
‘Very’ comes from the Latin for true and could be replaced with ‘truly’. In that sense, it’s like ‘literally’ and other attempts to emphasise.
akerr··on RootMyTV is a user-friendly exploit for rooting/jailbreaking LG webOS smart TVs
Same here. To disable the logo, press mute 3 times to bring up a secret menu.
akerr··on Open Source PC That Fits in Your Pocket
Looks a lot like the original EeePC. I used one for a couple of years but there was no doubt it was cramped. I still have it and it works. My N900 was fun but didn’t last quite as long before a bit of flex killed the wireless radios. I replaced it with an iPhone 4S and haven’t looked back: I still use open source software every day but running on, or accessed by, (excellent) Apple hardware (the M1 MacBook Air and iPhone 13 mini are the best computers I’ve ever had).
akerr··on My slightly mad quest for the perfect spoon
It really is harder than you would think.

akerr··on Show HN: AutoHotkey for Linux
Keyboard Maestro? The built-in AppleScript, Services and Keyboard shortcuts support?
akerr··on Upscayl – Free and Open Source AI Image Upscaler for Linux, macOS and Windows
Was Upscail taken?
akerr··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
Somewhat similar to Tab Groups in Safari.
akerr··on Puppertino: A CSS framework based on Human Guidelines from Apple
The logo looks like a dog wearing a plastic cone.
akerr··on Show HN: Colorvote.io – ranking all sRGB web colors by popularity
…and what would you do in a colour election?
akerr··on Show HN: Colorvote.io – ranking all sRGB web colors by popularity
1. White

2. Black

3. Colours (mostly blue)

Still disappointed?

akerr··on WxWidgets 3.2
I used WxWidgets almost 20 years ago with Python to quickly make a project that included printing support. I went from reading the docs to a working prototype in one night!

Hopefully this release will help the planned improvements to Audacity too.

akerr··on Lego Battle of Verdun [video]
This looks to be a history presentation in a medium the creator is most proficient, not a glorification or trivialisation of war, as evidenced by the epilogue.
