akeck··on Ask HN: Trying to find an old HN post, failing at search
Is it any of these?

https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=pastYear&page=0&prefix=fal...

akeck··on Hundred Rabbits is a small collective exploring the failability of modern tech
Rek went overboard in a Pacific storm north of Japan. ("Busy Doing Nothing" book)
akeck··on Show HN: Shadow IT Scan – Uncover SaaS Apps, Users and Risky OAuth Scopes
A lot of companies are MS O365/Teams shops.
akeck··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
My "favorite" behavior on the new post-DarkSky Weather app is that each of the phones in the house give different info re the weather directly outside. The worst is my child's phone which has its language set to Mandarin (the only substantive difference between their phone and our phones). Their Weather app is usually way off from our phones. None of the phones match the info given by NWS.
akeck··on Court Holds Federal Ban on Home-Distilling Exceeds Congress' Enumerated Powers [pdf]
Yup. I agree.
akeck··on Using S3 as a Container Registry
Note that CNCF's Distribution (formerly Docker's Registry) includes support for backing a registry with Cloudfront signed URLs that pull from S3. [1]

akeck··on Anybody have problems with bookmark organization like me?
I use Firefox bookmarks and use FF sync to make them available on all platforms. For organization, I keep them in a weird, organically grown folder structure that makes sense to me. If I really can't find something I use bookmark search on desktop Firefox. I occasionally make backups to my file server when I remember. It's an 80/20 solution that works well enough.
akeck··on Ask HN: What's your favorite Underrated Anime that no one talks about?
Roujin Z is really fun.
akeck··on LDAPjs decomissioned by maintainer over hateful email
I hope this doesn't become a more widely used repo attack vector: Abuse repo maintainers until one or more fold. Fork the repo and become the New Maintainer That Saves The Day. At a later time, insert attack code.
akeck··on From boom to burst, the AI bubble is only heading in one direction
I'm going to say "downish" but not "burst". I and a lot of other people I know are getting a lot of benefit from using LLMS to sketch and refine code more quickly.
akeck··on Abstrusegoose.com Is Gone for Good
https://web.archive.org/web/20170428055909/http://abstrusego...
akeck··on Ask HN: Advice for creating a joint bank account with a spouse?
Also, for joint investment accounts, look into a JTROS account (Joint Tenancy with Right of Survivorship)
akeck··on US salaries are falling. Employers say compensation is just 'resetting'
My pet theory is that outside of the recent tech salary bubble decade, anyone with a "normal" salary in the US can't really get ahead without at least investing in market index funds/ETFs. Otherwise, all an employee gets is time-for-money pay (which is constantly under pressure as a business cost) with little if any upside from high industry profits. Either that or play the startup equity lottery.
akeck··on U.S. opens UnitedHealth antitrust probe
This is like Luxottica owning optometrists offices, eyewear providers like Lenscrafters, and Eyemed vision insurance.
akeck··on Boston Faces $1B Tax Deficit from Faltering Office Market
Unfortunately, modern office buildings are proving difficult to convert to housing because of how they're constructed combined with code standards for housing (like required windows). Re Fed bailout, I suppose the Feds could fund tearing down unused office space and building code-compliant housing :-/

akeck··on Ask HN: 36 months of unemployment and depression. How to go back?
Also try lifting weights. Done carefully to avoid injury, it can produce fairly quick body fitness changes that usually help during job interviews. Having usually done long distance rowing, I was surprised how fast my muscles tightened up and grew with one lifting session a week.
akeck··on Real estate giant China Evergrande will be liquidated
Technically, I think replacing NY with Delaware may be a better comparison - specifically with respect to the Delaware Court of Chancery in which most large US companies litigate business issues.
akeck··on The lithium revolution has arrived at California's Salton Sea
Marketplace's "How We Survive" did an episode on the Salton Sea.

https://www.marketplace.org/shows/how-we-survive/gnarly-brin...

The whole podcast is excellent.

akeck··on Scammy AI-Generated Books Are Flooding Amazon
This may end up pushing Amazon into a pay-to-play model for publishing. :-/
akeck··on A Guide for Prospective Tea Monks
Conceptually similar to Japan's Iyashike genre.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iyashikei

akeck··on Show HN: Inbox Zero – open-source email assistant
I stopped doing Inbox Zero when I realized email search (O365 and Gmail in my case) is sufficient for my needs. I just don't have the energy to sort all my email, even with AI help. All I do lately is the occasional pass to delete large attachments and newsletters.
akeck··on How to Perfectly Crack an Egg (With One Hand) [video]
For a few years when I was younger, I got good at cracking eggs with a single hairline crack. I would then wash them, glue them back together, and then paint them with acrylic paint.
akeck··on Ask HN: Share your favorite software blog posts of 2023
We're Knot Friends

https://jeremykun.com/2023/04/01/were-knot-friends/

akeck··on OpenCola
I bought some CubeCola concentrate [1] which seems to be based on this. It's pretty good!

akeck··on The standard American household is now a millionaire, according to the Fed
My favorite design is the reverse of the current $2 bill.
akeck··on Gaming Companies Flag 'Highly Skilled Hackers' as Emerging Piracy Threat
Emerging? Haven't highly skilled folks been targeting games and game DRM for decades?
akeck··on Confused Deputy Problem
Is there a list of named information security problems like "confused debuty"?
akeck··on Ask HN: What outdated tech are you still using and are perfectly happy with?
"omxplayer" on raspi. We use it with sshfs as a hacky "Chromecast".
akeck··on Thunderbird and Whale
More info: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/pacific-northwest-prep...
akeck··on I chose the ThinkPad Z13 Gen1 as my Linux laptop
It's more manual, but I love that "sudo systemctl hibernate" works reliably on my X1 Carbon Gen6.
