akasakahakada··on What if AGI is not coming?
Uhh again the "only human has soul" argument. What means by soul, please define this word, philosopher. Does bird know language grammars indicate that soul exist? Does fish can do arithmetic up to 5 show that their soul exist? Does elephant do funeral to their dead fellow show that there is a soul? Can this humancentric ideology just go away?
akasakahakada··on What if AGI is not coming?
From nothing to ChatGPT opened to the public and billions students' lifes rely on that in the next month, isn't this the biggest step in the tech history?

akasakahakada··on What if AGI is not coming?
As long as keep philosophers keep shifting the definition of AGI, that should never come to us.

akasakahakada··on AIs ranked by IQ; AI passes 100 IQ for first time, with release of Claude-3
With the "in context" ability of LLM I think you can add one sentence like "as you were IQ185" to make AI ignore portion of its training data.
akasakahakada··on Screen time robs average toddler of hearing 1,000 words spoken by adult a day
My garbage parents won't let me watch TV when I was small. Not even educational TV for primary schools children teach stuff like difference between germs and virus. But their low educational background by all mean definitely not offering more to me. They said books are waste of money and they tear apart comic books that I bought using my little saving in front of my eyes. Only thing I can do is doing nothing just siting at home all day. After I made money from partime job and bought myself books, I never talked to them.

Remember that received an invitation to participate IQ test when I was in 3rd grade, gave the letter to my garbage parent and then never heard anything back. Class teacher may have noticed that there is a weird kid in the class and wanted to do something. But sorry miss you can't help me. Babies should be public property and let gov handle them when parents do not meet the intelligence criteria.

Just to say that maybe elsagate videos worth more than some human adults.

akasakahakada··on How does anyone learn advanced math. so hard
Yea the main issue of advanced math is that there are more gatekeepers than real people. They will prove themselves immediately by flagging/ downrate and then promote their left as exercise mentality.

Synthesia

As a vistual learner and graphical thinker, those music score on paper are all bullshit to me. Only this can help me out. You can import your own MIDI into it. Practice the shit out of it and at least can play 1 or 2 fairly advanced songs.

akasakahakada··on Memray – A Memory Profiler for Python
REPL 0% JupyterLab 80% Pycharm 20%

The reason is that Jupyter environment is lightyears more powerful than REPL. Feels like REPL is for those who don't code / only those who don't code would use REPL. I don't even use that after the first day.

akasakahakada··on Study captures hard truth: Walking home at night is not the same for women
Those hotspots on the brick walls indicate low validity of the test I think.

I want to see if there is a supplementary material or something to see more results but

> Data for this study cannot be shared because participants did not consent to public data sharing.

I get it but not every single one of them right? What is the repeatability?

akasakahakada··on Study captures hard truth: Walking home at night is not the same for women
Eye tracking gear is pretty cheap I think. All you need is a webcam capable laptop and github account. They could have done this with a video playing instead of a steady photo, so that you can see where the participant would focus on at realtime response. But make sure the experience is immensive like 5 mins long video or so. Also please do temporal analysis instead of averaging everything out. Because one with a normal mind could have figured out some people will be nervous at first looking at those dark places but then feel safe afterwards. You don't see this if you ignore time as a variable.
akasakahakada··on Study captures hard truth: Walking home at night is not the same for women
This is also my concern. How transferable is one looking at a photo vs actual scene. And this is from the fundamental limitation of whole field of humanities. They ignore science and experiments and logical thinking.

I once participated in a psychology (under the literature department ironically) experiment done by my friend, for the final year project. I was told to play a video game or simulation, to click everything clickable inside the room. There are electrodes all over my head. I mean ok, just clicking things and done, easy money.

After that

Friend: So you feel guilty when you steal those things right?

Me: Wait what? Is that a thief simulator?

akasakahakada··on Ask HN: Best basic to advanced Physics book(s)?
Hi I am Textbook Master. There are 2 books that fit your desire. You can just read from first page to the back without doing any exercise and appreciate the physical world. Which none of (literally) other books can provide the same experience.

1. Conceptual Physics

High school level. Talk about physics concepts and their manifestation in daily life/the world around us.

2. Matter and Interaction

Non standard college level physics that fuse contemporary advancement on theory into old school classical physics. There is no rough transition from classical to modern physics in this book since authors successfully merged both in the same narration.

akasakahakada··on Ask HN: Electron haters, help me understand (your hate)
Tried VScode in Macbook M1 and it sound like a vacuum cleaner ever since I launch the app. And I look at the CPU usage graph, it is constantly 200% while doing nothing. Googled why, people said because Electeon underneath VScode but I don't really know if it is true. Simply say, Electron is absolute garbage.

compare: 3 Pycharm instances siting at 10% CPU usage.
