ajonit··on Nano Banana Pro
Nano Banana Pro has blown the rest LLMs out of the park. It's wild to think how powerful these models will be in another 5 years.
ajonit··on We have an employee whose surname is Null (2014)
A similar thing happened to me when one of my readers had the surname Dikshit.

I blogged about that experience here: https://www.learnqtp.com/is-it-a-bug-or-a-feature/

ajonit··on Can A.I. be blamed for a teen's suicide?
I read the chat, and a few things stand out that AI should handle better, regardless of context. If a word like suicide is mentioned, it should immediately drop any roleplay or other activities. It's similar to how, in India, mentioning 'bomb' in an airport or plane leads to being questioned by authorities.

Also, it's alarming how easily a 14-year-old can access a gun.

ajonit··on Why Cloudflare for Domains?
Yes, Namecheap remains my second choice. Cloudflare's interface is so clean, and its transparent pricing ensures you never have to second guess costs or worry about being overcharged, especially useful when managing many domains.
ajonit··on An easier way to get your logo in the inbox: Google's latest BIMI changes
Now consider getting same visual indicators for ALL legit emails not just big companies. Which case would have a bigger recall value?

For a malicious actor spoofing a combo of SPF + DKIM + DMARC + BIMI won’t be a trivial job.

ajonit··on An easier way to get your logo in the inbox: Google's latest BIMI changes
Of course I understood your larger point on barriers to entry for a malicious actor.

If a thing like BIMI is not widespread, would it even help an average non-tech Joe who won’t even understand the reason behind that checkmark on a logo?

ajonit··on An easier way to get your logo in the inbox: Google's latest BIMI changes
Now that certificates are free, of course, all phishing sites use Let's Encrypt. Evaluating a website's legitimacy using SSL should not have been initiated by browser vendors. The messaging was wrong for the non-tech folks. They do not have anything to do with the site is fake/fraud/malicious. It was just the data-in-transit is safe or not.
ajonit··on An easier way to get your logo in the inbox: Google's latest BIMI changes
BIMI needs an LetsEncrypt equivalent of VMC to take-off. It's prohibitively expensive for small businesses.
ajonit··on Sal Khan is pioneering innovation in education again
Bill Gates has been a long-time fan of Sal Khan. In fact, I first learned about Sal Khan over a decade ago when online publications reported that Bill Gates was using Sal's videos to teach his kids.
ajonit··on All my thoughts after 40 hours in the Vision Pro
Great review.

I wonder how will these headsets affect eyesight?

ajonit··on That time Verisign typo-squatted all of .com and .net
Verisign sued ICANN! Why? What’s the full story?
ajonit··on Pixel 8 to have seven years of Android updates
Would love to see what others have to say on this but I suspect Apple replacement batteries are inferior compared to the one that comes with the new phone. 4 years of usage and battery max capacity was around 76%. I replaced my iPhone X battery last year. The new one I got is at 86% already and it is not even 12 months. (No usage pattern change. I replaced it from an Apple Store.)
ajonit··on Bitwarden login down due to Azure outage
My understanding of this XKCD:

It’s a subtle yet poignant reminder that our inclination, as tech-savvy individuals, is often to envision sophisticated technical exploits when considering hacking scenarios. However, the stark reality is that, in the vast majority of cases, both individuals and organizations fall prey to breaches not through intricate code manipulation, but rather via the art of social engineering. (beating the sh*t out of someone can be thought as an extreme form of social eng.) This comic underscores the importance of understanding and mitigating the very human vulnerabilities that persist at the heart of cybersecurity.

ajonit··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Only Apple can make people clap and screech for introducing a freaking charging port - USB C. :)
ajonit··on Vitalik Buterin reveals X account hack was caused by SIM-swap attack
Telecos are still careless inspite of the widespread nature of this attack.

What can be the solution for a SIM swap? Fingerprint (or iris scan) plus email OTP mandatory to get a SIM replaced?

ajonit··on Vitalik Buterin reveals X account hack was caused by SIM-swap attack
Quote of the day - If your world view has been degraded to see zero trust as a solution rather than a dystopian end state, meaning you’ve lost all trust in society, you’re highly vulnerable to be conned by the authority figures you secretly crave to trust.

Very well said.

ajonit··on Ask HN: Will Google delete inactive gmail accounts that forward email?
So I checked with Google One support, here is the answer from them: (and they were fine with me quoting them in a public forum)

Q: if I have an email account X and it auto-forwards email to an email account Y , will X be considered as an active account

A: “The short answer will be NO. Google considers an account active if there is a recent login to the account.”

ajonit··on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes
It’s a decade+ long problem asking for a solution. Not just this one site, Amazon, Google etc are littered with fake reviews and none of those companies are concerned.

If these companies don’t get their act together soon, I’m sure the Govt of various countries will compel them to do so.

ajonit··on 10% Anguilla's GDP this year comes from selling .ai domains
Similar case with .tv domains by Tuvalu.
ajonit··on Ask HN: Any LAN alternatives other than PowerLine or MOCA?
Fiber comes to my lower ground floor, from there there are several cat6 that runs across length and breadth of lower ground and ground floor. Provides excellent connectivity across the house. Just ensure there is minimal channel interference across various connected routers.
ajonit··on AWS Icon Quiz
This reminded me of AWS in plain English https://expeditedsecurity.com/aws-in-plain-english/
ajonit··on LANDrop – Drop any files to any devices on your LAN
I tried sending test files from ios to android and vice-versa.

Both the times it errored out with “it was not possible to establish direct connection with the peer”

Both devices are in the same wifi network.

ajonit··on Winner’s Curse: Negotiation Mistakes to Avoid
On the topic of negotiations, I would recommend a book “Never Split the difference” by Chris Voss a former FBI hostage negotiator. He takes you through his own experience of handling various hostage situations, salary negotiations etc.

Moderating something like HN is a very hard job. Gratitude .

ajonit··on Learn AutoHotKey by stealing my scripts
AutoHotKey is great.

Few years back, I made a video and published a free downloadable AHK template.

ajonit··on Upcoming .com and .xyz domain price increase
.com is not going anywhere.

Verisign sits on gold with the most popular TLD on the planet. Any registry, if offered a chance, will takeover .com in a heartbeat at any price.

Continuous price increase is unwarranted.

ajonit··on The Leadership Lessons of Steve Jobs (2012)
Nuggets of wisdom there. Worth re-visit even if you have read it earlier.
ajonit··on Chess is booming among teens
>>IMO if you're not paying I can't see why anyone would prefer chess.com over lichess<< For someone like me who has been playing for several decades now, it's the UI of chess.com/app.
ajonit··on Chess is booming among teens
It may sound weird but playing a game of online chess works as a way for me to unwind.

I have been playing for several decades now. Never picked up a chess book/video/tutorial in my life (after the initial introduction by a relative). Always played with the flow. I would admit sometimes I do wish I should learn some openings but somehow deep down I couldn't see myself learning chess through a tut. May be some day someone would convince me otherwise, who knows...

and I am in no way a pro, hover around 1600 rapid on chess.com. It says I am ahead of 98.5% folks. Not sure how will this 1600 translate to ELO ratings.
