ajma··on Olympian Jenny Simpson Says Her Running Career Is Over After Cardiac Arrest
The article says it was inherited. The first line in the wikipedia article you linked also says it was inherited.
ajma··on Abdominal fat predicts heart disease risk better than BMI
This is new? I thought they have been saying this for years
ajma··on Note-Taking and Personal Knowledge Management
Blue water bridge! Sarnia!
ajma··on China's open-weights AI strategy is winning
There are so many Chinese tech companies building models and someone there has to be managing the list of forbidden topics. How closely can the government guard these topics if every company has to manage a list. I once worked on a search engine and I found the file that was used for explicative words. I didn't understand more than half of what was in there.
ajma··on Dynamic Workflows in Claude Code
> It’s important to note that dynamic workflows consume meaningfully more usage than a typical Claude Code session
ajma··on Pro Max 5x quota exhausted in 1.5 hours despite moderate usage
I worked with Boris in the past and in my experience, Boris cares deeply about the customer. I'd vouch that Boris really cares about the issue people are running into.

ajma··on Ask HN: What would you do if you didn't work in tech?
Doctor. Still want to explore "systems" to diagnose issues and build plans for improvement.

When I was 45, I did briefly consider making the switch

ajma··on American Heart Association says melatonin may be linked to serious heart risks
I was scrolling around to see if I can find someone else that thought the same. In my usage of melatonin, it's only when I'm super stressed and can't seem to calm down enough to sleep.
ajma··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
That's the same move from the Ransom movie from 1996 https://youtu.be/haThIxPnYro?si=Jxu0elA-ylB5Z15q

ajma··on A deadly E. coli outbreak hit 15 states, but the FDA chose not to publicize it
Cook your food. I realize some people prefer it raw but from what I understand, cooking food kills ecoli. My family has eaten lettuce that has had ecoli reports but we usually thoroughly cook or vegetables.

ajma··on AMD's Strix Halo under the hood
Reminds me when I was Amazon, one of our tablets was codenamed Thor. We could ask the device what it's codename was and we special cases some functionality for the tablet we built. But it was the same code we used for the android app and it turned out some other tablet manufacturer used the codename Thor and all of a sudden the code was super broken on that device.
ajma··on Cuts to US national parks and forests met with backlash
> Long queues of cars were stuck outside Grand Canyon National Park over President's Day weekend, one day after the mass firing, due to a lack of toll operators to check people in at the gate.

I was there over Presidents Day weekend. The first day I went in (around 3pm) there was zero wait. The second day I went (around 10am), I had to wait 10 minutes. All the booths seemed open. I didn't find this matched up with my experience at all.

ajma··on I still don't think companies serve you ads based on your microphone
The argument I use to convince people is to ask them how long your battery lasts when you’re running any apps, I’ll then ask how long do you think your battery would last if the apps were listening all day long.

I can’t tell if my friends are convinced or if they’re too polite (or disinterested) to argue.

ajma··on Installed an open source garage door opener, and I'm loving it
My cars (2018 Odyssey) home link transmitter is terribly underpowered. I have to right up to the door for it to work. The $15 remotes from Amazon work fine from the street.
ajma··on Insomnia, but not lack of sleep, may hasten brain shrinkage: study
I started exercising (a lot) in the year and found that has helped me fall asleep faster. It doesn't have to be a whole lot either. 30 minutes of jogging or fast walking is enough to do it for me. I definitely feel it on days where I sit and do nothing. I have a harder time falling asleep.
ajma··on 91% of polled Amazon staff unhappy with RTO, 3-in-4 want to jump ship
I've always considered Blind to be a a source that's almost exclusively people unhappy with their company so the way I'm seeing this poll is "on a website of people unhappy with their employment, 91% are unhappy about the latest decision" or "in today's news, the sky is blue"
ajma··on It's Not Just You. No One Wants Kids Anymore [video]
In my tech crowd, I often have the most kids (four). Sometimes I meet others with 4 but it's pretty rare. I have a non-tech group of friends. With four, I'm probably more average.
ajma··on CrowdStrike global outage to cost US Fortune 500 companies $5.4B
But they apologized with a $10 gift card.

Soo. $5.4B - $10

ajma··on Kids Who Get Smartphones Earlier Become Adults with Worse Mental Health (2023)
I don't remember feeling negatively affected by social media until politics started to get into my feed.
ajma··on Deterioration of local community a major driver of loss of play-based childhood
Does families having fewer number of children contribute to this? The most local community would be children that live under the same roof.
ajma··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
I still have my icq number memorized and I think I always will
ajma··on Googlers paid so well paid it would take decades for ordinary people to catch up
There's a good number of googlers that understand the system is a game. They always vote that they want more even if they believe they are being paid more than most.
ajma··on Microsoft bans U.S. police from using enterprise AI tool for facial recognition
Not only are they remotely accessible. There publicly accessible (not all of them) https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/local-services/transit-transp...
ajma··on Jonathan Haidt blames teenage depression, anxiety on smartphones, social media
I was very much going to take a similar approach to help train a child to know what the right behavior is. I have four children and it turns out they're all very different in terms of varying amounts of self control. I can definitely with my second one to use it at appropriate times but my oldest is way too impulsive and doesn't have the self control to exercise good behaviors (this isn't just a smartphone problem).
ajma··on Should You Be Rinsing Your Plates Before Loading the Dishwasher?
My dishwasher sends the water into the waste disposal built into the sink. If the waste disposal has a lot of food that hasn't been grinded it up, it seems to slow the draining of the dishwasher so not all the food gets drained before the rinse cycle. So I learned to run the waste disposal for a couple seconds before starting a dishwashing load.
ajma··on Gas Trapped in Antarctic Ice Recorded the Mass Death of 56M People
I feel like this is a beginning of a movie where a terrible bacteria gets frozen for 40,000 years and then someone puts it into a martini and it causes a worldwide outbreak.
