ajma··on A South Carolina lawmaker is suing Instagram after his son died by suicide
isn't that basically what Apple did by using algorithms to scan for CSAM material. Even with the level of trust that Apple has, people weren't ok with this.
ajma··on FreeTaxUSA
Can you explain the mistake that turbox tax makes? I'm wondering if I did mine wrong too
ajma··on Home-schoolers dismantled state oversight. Now they fear pushback
Practically speaking, homeschooling will usually require one parent stay at home. That isn't a luxury that a lot of families have and will tend to be higher income families which usually goes with higher educated parents. Higher educated parents tend to have value education so I don't think there's a risk for them to get a poor education.
ajma··on New Amazon office in Holland is an old prison
Wasn't one of Amazons Seattle building an old morgue?
ajma··on Former Amazon engineer quits after stressful job
I've done this too at many FANG companies. I've put too many expectations on myself. And at other times I've managed my own work-life balance. It's possible but it takes some foresight to set it up.
ajma··on Sessionic: A cross-browser extension to save, manage, restore tabs and sessions
where does data get synced to?
ajma··on The male loneliness epidemic and how it affects fathers
This year, I found https://f3nation.com/ and it's been great. Very welcoming group of men and these group of men are each others support group. Many of them seem to have known each other for years. It's free so more approachable than some expensive gyms. The one I go to in Puget Sound also has a bunch of their kids show up and I've started to bring my 11 year old. For some of you that might be turned off by the part that might look religious, at least in my area, nothing seems religious but I'm told that's different in other parts of the country.
ajma··on Paper and bamboo straws contain PFAS chemicals more often than plastic straws do
I usually ask for no ice. You get more beverage that way too.
ajma··on Git-appraise – Distributed Code Review for Git
I know the main contributor to this. I'll flag him so he can answer any questions people might have.
ajma··on One third of Canadians fine with prescribing assisted suicide for homelessness
I'm not happy with the clickbait title either but the National Post is a reasonably big news outlet. Or at least it was when I lived in Canada 20 years ago.
ajma··on Kids who get smartphones earlier become adults with worse mental health
I'm still trying to read it in depth but I skimmed and didn't see anything about controlling for wealth. I've heard many people talk about when a family isn't well off and both parents need to work, there's a trend to give them a device because it makes for a cheap babysitter. We also know poverty has a big connection with mental health in adults.
ajma··on Sex traffickers used family safety app to control victims
Invest in ML to spot patterns. I don't know specifically how it was done, but I heard that Whatsapp had a hard time with spam after e2e encryption since you couldn't catch spam by examining the text. So instead they started looking for patterns and found things like an account that was less than a week old sending out thousands of messages a week. It's an outlier in usage pattern. I believe credit card fraud systems do something similar. Like if you suddenly make a purchase far far away or in a category that you never do, then it gets flagged. I'm happy to help brainstorm more ideas.
ajma··on Chronic exposure to synthetic food colorant Red 40 promotes colitis in mice
"Here, we show chronic exposure of AR at a dose found in commonly consumed dietary products exacerbates experimental models of colitis in mice. While intermittent exposure is more akin to a typical human exposure, intermittent exposure to AR in mice for 12 weeks, does not influence susceptibility to colitis."

The article plainly states that the exposure that's common to humans produced no results in mice.

ajma··on Ask HN: Laid off employees, did the company ask you to return equipment?
I was once at a company where the company was doing really poorly too. They still sent collection agencies after people who didn't return laptops and phones.
ajma··on A therapeutic church is an atheist church
This is not a consistently held view of Christians
ajma··on Write a note to your spouse every day
+1, I'd love to see your wife write up a similar post about how she feels about this exercise.
ajma··on Write a note to your spouse every day
Having kids close together is also a legitimate strategy for having closeness among siblings. Not a guarantee, but having them in a similar stage of development can help them play better together (older kids aren't always interesting in what younger kids are, also there are physical differences that can make sports no fun for older kids). There's a practical aspect here. Not for everyone and it also varies a lot based on the temperament of the children. The strong outside influence on my family to half multiple was that we were able to see a good number of examples of large (>=4 kids) families that were an example of what we wanted too.
ajma··on Covid spike protein induces cognitive deficit and anxiety-like behavior in mice
Good thing I'm not a mouse
ajma··on Ask HN: Have you ever sold a domain-name? How was your experience selling it?
I sold a domain years ago. I got a random email from someone asking me to buy it. Upon some research, it looked like that person was collecting domains names under the same topic. I did some initial negotiation but wondered if others would be interested. I was lucky and found someone else that was interested but the lucky part was that I had found a person that was the first persons nemesis. They had both tried to buy the same set of domains in the past so I think I stumbled upon two fierce competitors. I wasnt able to figure out how to negotiate between them over email so I just but it on eBay and let them bid on it through that. I ended up with at least 10x more than I was originally looking for.

ajma··on Against Dog Ownership (2020)
do you think it's the stage of life you're in? maybe cats fit your lifestyles/worldviews better before, but you're older now and a dog fits better?
ajma··on AT&T, Which Owns CNN, Helped Build Far-Right One America News

ajma··on Trolls convinced journalists they were “abortion bounty hunters”
The quote was from Mere Christianity
ajma··on FB messenger silently censoring links, claims they were sent
I just tried with the same url and there's a message telling me it won't send
ajma··on Signal outage is keeping messages from sending
I have friends still running into problems. They received my message but they had to reply to me in whatsapp
ajma··on Parents got more time off, then the backlash started
Another modern effect is that a lot of people don't live around extended family anymore which ends up affecting childcare options, especially with daycares in the state they are.
ajma··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
hmm... am I alone in being someone who likes the butterfly keyboard?
ajma··on Capgras syndrome gives us a unique insight into the digital age (2016)
Mentioning Facebook in the title is just clickbait. I'm willing to hear a scientist talk about disorders and how they related to social media but don't just use a name to get people to click on an article. It really discredits the writer for being deceptive.
ajma··on Ask HN: What are the typical work hours in Silicon Valley?
I think this depends on lot on the team's culture and the company culture. When a company serves lunch, teams tend to eat together and can get done in 30 minutes without rushing.
