aizatto··on How to communicate when trust is low without digging yourself into a deeper hole
I use "communication snippets" or "fillers"

for example

> Person A: “Hey, do you have any idea why this number is low? It’s a mystery … nobody I’ve talked to yet seems to know.”

is really long

I just say

> curious; why is that number low?

other prefixes I use are:

1. adding to the discussion

2. for discussion

3. low pri, no need to respond

4. neutral

5. nonactionable

6. sharing opinion

aizatto··on Lifestyle design from first principles
> Any recommendations on how to think about expected value when minimizing suffering?

I don't think it's about "minimizing suffering". There is things to suffer for, and there are things which you shouldn.t

I like to prefix my questions with "When should"

Therefore:

> When should I suffer?

and

> When should I not suffer?

I built a platform where I record questions I ask myself

Here is for the keyword "suffering"

aizatto··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
Not everything is important. Not all mentions, threads, conversations, channels are important.

Prioritize the most important ones.

Using Slack subsections I prioritize like so:

  1. P0 - Stakeholders and Peers
Includes my manager, and peers I work with regularly
    Includes announcement groups
    Includes leadership groups
  2. P0 - Adhoc Conversations
    Anything with a P0 individual
  3. P1 - Reports
    All of my direct reports
  4. P0 - Incidents
    Anything that needs my attention
    Alerts, monitors, etc
  5. P0 Engineering
  6. Almost everything else
  7. Guilds and Social
Hope it helps.

If something is important enough, it will reach you.

aizatto··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
This is a really cool idea!

edit: feature/request

Scenario, if I save a link from HackerNews, I like to save the submission of it as well. I wonder if I send a HackerNews link to forlater.email; it can parse the article and remind me I got it from HackerNews.

For example, I'd submit "https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31852384" and in the email, it'd contain:

1. HackerNews link (so i can review the comments as well)

2. Original article link and content

food for thought, but love your product idea

aizatto··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
I disagree with this article.

Higher resolution (to an extent) allows me to see more stuff.

4K on a 27" doesn't work for my workflow.

My workflow on a laptop is to put two windows side by side so that I can compare things/read documents/code against documentation.

Unfortunately most websites nowadays are designed for widths of 1280px, and anything less than that is sometimes treated as mobile or gives it a terrible responsive design. It frustrates me, endlessly.

On a 16" MBPr I can get 2048x1280, which allows me to put up two windows side by side at 1024px, which does work for most sites, but sometimes there are some sites which are just broken.

A big reason why I need larger windows is when doing side by side PR Reviews on GitHub, 1024px can only show 56 characters, 1280px can only show 78 characters. Personal opinion, GitHub has too much white space. I tend to have another window open to compare against documentation/etc.

I've compared it at

https://github.com/aizatto/character-length

https://github.com/aizatto/character-length/commit/bae8f00fe...

For desktop:

I'm comfortable is 27" 2560x1440. Two windows side by side at 1280px. Pixel pitch is 0.2331mm

Using 4k at 27" is too small for me. Pixel pitch is 0.1554mm . Without the correct dongle/cable MacBooks can't even push at 4k 60hz via HDMI. Tip: use DisplayPort.

I've settled on 38" 3840x1600 because it allows me to setup three windows side by side at 1280. Which works great for my workflow.

Which sometime tends to be:

- 1 window for source material - 1 window for my main focus - 1 window for a comparison material

38" 3840x1600 pixel pitch is 0.229mm.

I settled on the Dell U3818DW, because it can charge my MBP via USB-C. Only recommendation is if your laptop is asleep, don't leave your laptop plugged int. It likes to wake it.

The 1600 also gives me some extra room vertically.

If you can afford it, I'd recommend giving 3840x1600 a try.

aizatto··on Ask HN: What do you use to keep track of bookmarks/notes/snippets?

aizatto··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
I built Logbook for my own personal note taking.

Two key features for me:

1. Tagging notes works better for me than a directory structure

2. "Feed" style of notes allows me to go search more notes.

https://build.my/logbook

For sharing with public I use GitBook https://www.aizatto.com thought here are some short comings https://www.aizatto.com/why-gitbook . I personally like how it can output to Markdown, so that means I can have a copy of it anywhere

aizatto··on Things I Learnt from a Senior Software Engineer
I created something for myself to use https://www.logbook.my

I can both back date and future date entries.

I keep a tag called "Daily Entries" with a timestamp on the day of what I use, I can automatically add a timestamp with the shortcut "CTRL + T"

Future dating allows me to plan ahead as well.

I write an entry about a future event (ie a meeting) and prefill some information. Then when the meeting happens, I just open up the entry and start entering.

I've been using Logbook since 1st May, and personally now have 1139 entries, and 576 tags.

I've been recording:

- Recipes - Meeting notes - Shower Thoughts - Career timeline - Car maintenance - "Best Practices" on a variety of subjects - Many more

I also use timestamps a lot, and have a preference for how they are formatted so I created https://timestamps.aizatto.com

I hope some of these may help people here

aizatto··on Ask HN: Have you ever had an existential crisis?
Yes.

If by definition "Why am I here? What is purpose?", then yes.

I've spent a lot of time "soul searching" by asking myself questions, and also similarly asked people the same questions as well to try to learn from them.

I tried to by systematic and log all my efforts too.

I put together https://www.deepthoughtapp.com/ as a means to better understand myself and why I do what I do. Being able to look at past answers has been super helpful in understanding my behavior

Maybe some of these keywords may help you. Take the time to answer some of the questions yourself (on paper, in your own notebook/journal)

aizatto··on Commit messages guide
I have my own notes here: https://www.aizatto.com/engineering-code/commit-messages

I think what I really like Angular's Commit Message Guidelines that suggest you include a "type" (build, docs, feature, fix, refactor) prefix into the commit message to help organize at a quick glance what the commit does.

https://github.com/angular/angular/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING....

aizatto··on Ask HN: What are good resources for life advice?
What sort of "life advice" do you want?

I think for starters is to realize there is a lot of contradicting life advice. Then the other thing is wether people follow the advice they give others.

There is a Carl Jung quote:

> Only the paradox comes anywhere near to comprehending the fullness of life.

Personally for me, understanding life is understanding the pros/cons of every scenario.

The pros and cons of short term thinking.

The pros and cons of long term thinking.

The trade offs between both. There are trade offs in everything we do. Understanding them, and accepting them is important.

aizatto··on Redesigning GitHub Repository Page

Wanted to see see if others did too.

If your commit history is messy, then you have a different problem.

aizatto··on Ask HN: How are you getting through (and back from) burning out?
The short answer is: It's complicated, but doable.

There is a lot of good advice here in this thread.

I would begin by forgiving yourself, and by being kind to yourself.

I burned out almost two and a half years ago for the same reason.

My ambition didn't match my ability and I was beating myself up for it. It was an identity crisis for me. I wasn't able to perform as well as I previously had.

I spent the past few years observing my thoughts, and asking myself questions on why I was having those thoughts, and it helped me.

I funneled the energy into https://www.deepthoughtapp.com/

I think there are many areas to start, and even writing this list, can seem overwhelming.

- Be kind to yourself

- Forgive yourself

- Be grateful for where you are now

- Have realistic expectations

- Exercise

- Find/create other sources of fulfillment

- Practice mastery of your craft with a smaller project

- Learn how to empower yourself

- Find other activities where you can feel empowered

- Surround yourself with healthy friends

- Understand why you think what you think

- Understand what maintenance is needed to keep your engine going

- Have other activities where you can see progress in

- Define healthy boundaries

aizatto··on Ask HN: How do you motivate yourself to keep working on a project?
I've personally spent a lot of time examining my own motivation. I built a project called Deep Thought https://www.deepthoughtapp.com/en/keywords/motivation/

I have several techniques:

- Be kind to yourself

- Be comfortable with not finishing everything you need to do today

- Break down large tasks into smaller tasks

- I break down the small tasks using https://asana.com/

- Complete smaller tasks to gain motivation/momentum

- I try to use other smaller tasks (not related to the project) to build momentum

- Break up my day into time slices

  - Gym for 1 hour

  - Work for 1-2 hours

  - Lunch for 1 hour

  - Work for 1-2 hours

  - Some other activity for 1 hour
- I use my Apple Watch timer to trigger me to move along

- You can use a time tracking of sorts. I've been trying https://clockify.me/

  - I use tags to indicate what I'm doing:

    - Relax

    - Play

    - Planning

    - Research

    - Programming
- I set in my calendar times for

  - Breakfast

  - Reflection

  - Work

  - Gym

  - Social
aizatto··on Alan Kay: Is it too late to create a healthy future? [video]
I haven’t watched the video, but I’d love to know what other peoples answer to the question on is.

> Is it too late to create a healthy future?

Thoughts?

Personally I don’t think so.

Creating a healthy future, depends on defining what is unhealthy (within reason, this is also subjective).

Providing context and teaching people/our children why we think it is unhealthy.

Letting them decide on their own.
