airnomad··on Reasons Not to Use Google (2015)
RMS discovered SEO
airnomad··on Deconstructing Google’s excuses on tracking protection
Go talk to your marketing team and you would be amazed by level of tracking those guys doing or should be doing in order to win the market.

I work in a very boring niche for a small company and you'll receive email from us and we'll know what ads you clicked to find us 1 year ago and that we'll keep your entire browsing history and utilize it to tailor our messaging and that's just a begining of it. And our budgets are fraction of what huge online advertisers spend.

Modern digital marketing wouldn't be possible without tracking and that's just how it is.

If we make it harder via regulations, we'll just make it more expensive and that's all. Kind of similar as drugs - demand is so strong that supply is going to be there no matter what you do.

airnomad··on Deconstructing Google’s excuses on tracking protection
I find it amusing how commenters on HN are so privacy-sensitive while good share of software industry today supports, depends on or directly is involved in people tracking, this way or another.
airnomad··on Camera vs. Lidar
So we could have highways offering 100% automomy and small village roads offering 20% autonomy.

Investment wise it wouldn't be impossible since roads are already expensive to build.

airnomad··on Camera vs. Lidar
What if we have sensors/cameras/etc along the road and they feed data to whichever car is there?

And if we also have cars share their sensor data?

Would that speed things up in terms of achieving full autonomy?

airnomad··on History and Effective Use of Vim
Easier then ever maybe but still probably impossible to avoid. It's not that anyone wants to mess up with live, it's more like you don't have a choice.
airnomad··on History and Effective Use of Vim
You're quite green, aren't you?
airnomad··on What Happens After Amazon’s Domination Is Complete? Its Bookstore Offers Clues
Idk how closely you guys are watching but industry around Amazon affiliates is huge and getting bigger. Amazon is basically outsourcing discovery to third party which means their AI can't keep up. I believe Amazon could be disrupted by niche player who do discovery and quality right.
airnomad··on Why Google+ Failed
It died because Facebook was better. As simple as that.
airnomad··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer
That's because our tools are not good enough so what we lack in tools we compensate by individual developer quality.

I spend a lot of time within WordPress ecosystem and I've seen people coming to me with 20K products shops they've built and maintain without a single line of code written.

I've seen companies operating online without having any developments either on contract or in house.

Because for certain simpler scenarios, there's UI based tools you can run your business on.

Sure they come to me because eventually they need something they can't do with tools they use but those are becoming more and more high level jobs.

Web development is pretty much figured out problem. You have legions of repleacable low value developers churning out pages and you have subset of highly paid specialists who can do more advanced things.

But those gazillions web pages are doing their job, they drive sales, improving information quality etc. so I could say digital workers are factory workers of our time.

On certain jobs line is blurry - designers can do basic WordPress but they also can set up MailChimp because machine needs to be humming.

airnomad··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer
Developers are new factory workers. Pay is good now because industry is expanding and there's not enough of us but it won't be like that forever. And bottom line work is already being commoditized (WordPress ecosystem etc).
airnomad··on TSA-style body scanners are coming to public spaces
...which means this is primarily US board.
airnomad··on What I gained, lost and learned while working for Microsoft
I'm not sure what is so wrong with politely telling someone that you want to have sex with her or him. I mean I want many things but that doesn't mean I'll get them.
airnomad··on Tim Cook: Apple doesn't donate to political candidates and PACs shouldn’t exist
How little money FAANG spend for lobbying is a compliment to US political system.

Few millions a year for companies doing 10s or 100s billions in revenue, that's really rounding error.

And they would spend more if ROI is there but obviously it is not.

airnomad··on Handshake Donates $300k to Debian
How we ended up here? Many of us make $100K+ per year yet important projects we use every day get little to no funding. It's Debian! And I'm as guilty as the next guy for not donating.
airnomad··on Popular dark-web hosting provider hacked, 6,500 sites down
Would it be possible or feasible to compile a site into a single binary? Within binary there would be, say 1GB encrypted file system and embedded SQL lite could write data to it and embedded http process would be able to serve and store static content.

On startup you'd enter password and decrypt a baked-in filesystem.

I guess this would still be possible to break into as long as the app is working since decryption key would be saved in RAM but as soon as server goes offline data would be inaccessible.

Then you host this, say, in Russia or China and you should be safe from USA authorities.

airnomad··on SpaceX just got FCC approval to launch 7,518 satellites
Why do they need approval for this? It's not like Space is owned by anyone?
airnomad··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2018)

airnomad··on GitLab Made $10.5M in Revenue with Every Employee Working from Home
I lived in an area where a lot of people were contracted to work for the US Army in their bases in Afganistan, Iraq, etc. for support roles (kitchen work, IT maintenance etc) with 6 months deployment, then a month free and 6 months again.

It was kind of a work that attracted many people from many different nationalities and their pay level was adjusted by average income in their home countries. So their expenses during the deployment were the same but the amount they would bring home was as much as 3x different for the same role.

airnomad··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2018)
Location: Spain Remote: yes Willing to relocate: No Technologies: full web stack + strong Linux knowledge Resume: senior web dev looking to architecture things Email: hi@mtomic.com
airnomad··on iPhones are hard to use
I think the big part of the problem is that people don't know what their device or software can do and what is possible to do with it.

Once you show people how to use a certain feature they get on quite easily.

Insane amount of productivity is lost because a lot of people don't feel comfortable with their digital tools and think they have to live with whatever default settings are.

airnomad··on Pregnancy Discrimination Is Rampant Inside America’s Biggest Companies
"WE had twins so SHE wasn't going back to work anyway"

I'd say you were discriminating her way more than Google.

Kids are ruinous for women careers but only partly for practice like one described.

The other reason is that we as families, partners and society in general accept that kids are, essentially, a woman job.

I'd say CSS is part of a stack for a long time now.
airnomad··on Firefox 48 Beta, Release, and E10S
My biggest issue with FF is Firebug - it just can't compete with Chrome dev tools. On the other hand, FF has one huge advantage - Pentadactyl.

airnomad··on Parents with annual family incomes below $125,000 will pay no tuition
I wonder what chances you have to get into Ivy League in the first place if your parents earn less then 125k.
airnomad··on Dell XPS 13 Review
I just don't understand why vendors limit max memory nowdays. I mean, I have 8GB in 8 years old T61.
airnomad··on A Critique of “Don’t Fuck Up The Culture”
Corporate culture is fancy word for lowering wages by hyping up a company and thus shifting bargaining power from employees to employer.

I mean, I'm all for that, but let's call things for what they really are.
