aifooh7Keew6xoo··on OpenAI deletes ban on using ChatGPT for "military and warfare"
yeah most "working cities" host air force munitions directorates actively engaged in researching psychological warfare on social networks too

if you want some entertaining reading go ahead and browse through Eduardo Pasiliao's research at your working city there:

I'll summarize it for you: computational propaganda with an emphasis on discerning and disrupting social network structure.

It is atypical for issues that affect elite bottom lines to be subject to political gridlock.

The gridlock is simply the manifested reality that legislation is fully pay to play, but if you're paying that's not your problem.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on US Pushed Dutch Maker of Chip Equipment to Block Chinese Sales Before Deadline
It seems to me like this whole Chinese lithography sanction deal is not really... working.

SMIC is generously 1-2 nodes behind Intel at this point and have only caught up since we've started utilizing sanctions?

Intel meanwhile has not had to compete in any other sense than process technology in decades.

They've been habitually humiliated by any competitor with access to any process no matter how dated for the simple fact that they're trying to compete not maximize monopoly extraction with that process.

They've abandoned numerous innovations simply because they weren't extractive enough compared to inferior alternatives.

I don't think any amount of tipping the scale with sanctions is going to save Intel from being savaged into a mist of blood and insolvency the moment a competitor enters the arena without a process technology disadvantage, and that much seems inevitable now.

It's simply not in their DNA to survive in that environment.

On the other hand, I suppose lobbying for sanctions and subsidies would be textbook Intel strategy.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on It's possible the universe is "running" as a black hole computer, here's why
The interesting implication of this particular interpretation to me is not that God has a PC but that everything running on God's PC has exactly the same PC (because it can also manipulate mass falling into a black hole).

I feel like the author doesn't really need to introduce the concept of black hole computation to draw an equivalence between simulation theory and interacting with reality to achieve an intended state, though.

In a sense any time you manipulate reality you are simulating a new reality in a computational subset of your prior reality, with similar implications whether or not any part of the computation falls into a black hole or involves digital logic.

I think at least some part of simulation theory must be true because it is trivially equivalent to having consequences in reality, and black hole computation as described would just be a limiting case where the mass-energy is potentially fully occupied by a single computation approaching infinite space and time complexity.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on Major pornography site blocks users in NC in response to new law
It should be pretty clear from the language what the intent is.

You need to pay their cronies the protection fee or something unfortunate might happen to your porn site.

With a side helping of pandering to the christofascist base, which laps up transparent corruption up as long as they flog the sinners a few times a session.

It is, quite simply, why I left North Carolina.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on Amazon allegedly resells damaged books
My understanding is that Amazon is not accounting for the royalties after they are returned from an author purchase and resold under terms other than the royalty free terms.

It's not that he wants to get paid for the unsold inventory, it's that he believes he doesn't get paid at all when they resell as new the used inventory he rejected and returned in quality control of his royalty free author purchase.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on America lost the chestnut, its "perfect tree"
I imagine it's going to involve a pulverization or grinding step to increase surface area and availability of whatever has caloric value in the plant matter (the equivalent biological processes all seem to), but I'm sure with the appropriate process you could make a soylent bamboo paste or something yeah.
aifooh7Keew6xoo··on NYU Student Owns a $6M Crypto Mine. His Secret Is Out
My understanding was that a US owner contracted aspects of the facility construction and neglected to pay the contractors, then sold the completed facility to the Chinese investors.

It sounds like the original owner's contractor is alleging that the Chinese investors are also not paying them for services at the mine, while the Chinese investors are claiming the contractor failed to deliver?

It's not really clear from the article who is even ripping who off to me.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on How many legs do ten elephants have, if two of them are legless?
Most LLMs that are being studied popularly have not been trained with significant emphasis on arithmetic accuracy or mathematical reasoning, and those subjects represent a vanishing minority of their corpus and consequently maps poorly to the tokenization.

Essentially every obvious optimization here is currently bearing fruit simultaneously in smaller studies and incrementally larger models should continue to exhibit performance gains even without the particular focus on this area.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on Material made of carbon and nitrogen is nearly as hard as diamond
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitride

> Like carbides, nitrides are often refractory materials owing to their high lattice energy, which reflects the strong bonding of "N3−" to with metal cation(s). Thus, cubic boron nitride, titanium nitride, and silicon nitride are used as cutting materials and hard coatings. Hexagonal boron nitride, which adopts a layered structure, is a useful high-temperature lubricant akin to molybdenum disulfide.

Beyond that, when it comes to cutting tools in particular, there's often interesting solid phase and surface chemistry with layered gradients of oxynitrides forming at depth from the working interface that have similar properties to the base nitride and absorb energy through multiple phase changes and chemical dissociations before ultimate mass reduction, extending the life of the working surface

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on Material made of carbon and nitrogen is nearly as hard as diamond
I assume this is discussing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%92-Carbon_nitride but the article neglects to identify the carbon nitride compound and the journal article doesn't seem to be available.

And then you'd still probably die of starvation or some variation of malnutrition, for lack of the physical capacity to consume the 17 lbs of bamboo a day necessary to sustain 2000 kcal intake.

I'm not even entirely sure that the act of consuming it yields more calories from consumption than consumed in exertion for humans.

Most species that subsist on bamboo are sedentary and spend significant fractions of their time and energy simply masticating.

It's actually referred to as a bioplastic in the linked Wikipedia article and is a solid, polymerizing organic molecule with "plastic"-like properties -- and, apparently, known biological activity.

I think it's a valid question that its status as not being petroleum derived does not necessarily answer meaningfully.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on DIY ventilation heat exchanger (2010)
I've had good success adding various utility and ventilation feed throughs in rentals with sliding glass door inserts, including large ducts for various HVAC experiments.

I start with a board and cut/slot it so it fits neatly into the top and bottom tracks, then I move the latch receiver to the board, zip a few screws through the board where the holes won't be noticed.

The glass door opening becomes a bit narrower, and I can cut as many holes as I want in that little bit of wall.

If it's painted white it usually ends up looking better than most of the corporate maintenance work on the building.

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on DIY ventilation heat exchanger (2010)
I think the issue is that when the heat exchange occurs one way, the HRV is effectively a condenser.

Moisture builds on the heat exchange surfaces of the heat exchanger, particulates, spores, etc. in the air deposit nutrients and viable life in the crud, it thrives and multiples right into the incoming airstream for your residence.

When the window is opened the air mixes without a surface for condensation and there's much less immediate deposition so there's not an enriched medium to sustain accelerated growth entirely in the air stream, but it still probably occurs to some extent in a more diffuse manner that produces a significantly lower ambient spore/toxin/particulate load

aifooh7Keew6xoo··on A Cultural Critique of the Tesla Cybertruck
I'm not a big fan of the fire resistance of newer Toyotas.

They spontaneously combust frequently enough to merit multiple recalls and there have been a number of unexplained fires reported in the news and on forums outside the recall model years.

In most cases the source of ignition has been treated as the defect for the recalls, but I'm of the opinion that the design of the undercarriage of many of the newer Toyota trucks is simply a fire hazard waiting for an excuse to become an insurance claim.

It's essentially a forced draft chimney with a plastic gas tank at the end practically sitting on the exhaust, without heat shielding, inches from the suspension (confirmed cause of fire recall #1) and bearing the weight of the plastic bed (confirmed cause of fire recall #2).

Oh, right, and I almost forgot the bed! The bed sitting over the barely shielded exhaust and unshielded plastic gas tank is also plastic in most of the newer ones too... yep, they're pretty flammable.

Dave: How would you account for this discrepancy between you and the twin 9000?
HAL: Well, I don’t think there is any question about it. It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error.
Frank: Listen HAL. There has never been any instance at all of a computer error occurring in the 9000 series, has there?
HAL: None whatsoever, Frank. The 9000 series has a perfect operational record.
Frank: Well of course I know all the wonderful achievements of the 9000 series, but, uh, are you certain there has never been any case of even the most insignificant computer error?
HAL: None whatsoever, Frank. Quite honestly, I wouldn’t worry myself about that.
