ahoy··on Whole Foods employees are staging a nationwide 'sick-out'
the first rule of negotiation is to set your initial ask high
ahoy··on New York Governor announces 100% workforce reduction for non-essential services
Cuomo loves half-measures and taking credit for not doing much of anything.

There's no force of law behind this order.

Earlier this week he announced "mortgage relief," but its means-tested and difficult to actually navigate. It won't help.

A year or 2 ago he rolled out his "free college for every new yorker" plan. It benefits about 10% of the population.

Cuomo's only skill is talking a big game. He's exactly as bad as most other neolibs.

ahoy··on More bosses give four-day workweek a try
Sounds like labor organizing, and yes, its the best way to ensure you say some say in what your work-life looks like.
ahoy··on Beer Waste Saves Montana Town $1M on Water Treatment
They do not. Those sentences are about a different water reclamation facility facing different circumstances. You should amend your comment.
ahoy··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
I think you vastly overestimate the power of the r/childfree subreddit as a voting bloc
ahoy··on Why do so many bad drivers have luxury cars? A new study blames disagreeable men
I imagine wage disparity b/t men and women is part of it: I'd bet more men drive luxury cars than women b/c more men than women are paid enough to afford them.
ahoy··on The spine of San Francisco is now car-free
great, dont come to them!
ahoy··on Education and Men without Work
National Affairs is a publication of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. It's important to keep in mind their ideology when reading anything they publish.
ahoy··on Confessions of a lotus-eater
This is totally unhinged.
ahoy··on Uber stops upfront ride pricing in response to California worker law
yeah they could just not work instead!
ahoy··on For tech-weary Midwest farmers, 40-year-old tractors now a hot commodity
To the extent that my children depend on me to eat, yes, its bad for their livelihood.

I'm saying that technology is _bad_. I'm saying that losing your job is bad, and if your boss replacing you with a machine is what causes that you're right to be upset.

ahoy··on For tech-weary Midwest farmers, 40-year-old tractors now a hot commodity
US agriculture is also heavily subsidized
ahoy··on For tech-weary Midwest farmers, 40-year-old tractors now a hot commodity
Losing your job to automation is bad for your livelihood. It has been since we started automating things.
ahoy··on For tech-weary Midwest farmers, 40-year-old tractors now a hot commodity
There is an enormous body of law in the US that incentivizes a top-down corporate business structure and disincentives a co-op business structure.
ahoy··on Bloomberg just bought CityLab and put half its reporters out of a job
This story fits into a larger context of wealthy investors buying up media properties and gutting their staff. It's extra relevant b/c Bloomberg is outrageously wealthy and running for president.
ahoy··on California, and the US, shouldn’t be afraid of density and upzoning
If your city is dense enough that you live within walking/bus distance of your work and basic necessities (groceries, etc) you dont need to have every single person own a car. The cars are a big part of the problem and as long as we keep building to accomodate them and not people things aren't going to improve
ahoy··on California, and the US, shouldn’t be afraid of density and upzoning
You dont need NYC levels of density to achieve big improvements though. You just can't have a "city" full of single-family homes like you do in places like San Francisco.

I'd also posit that the culture changes follow, and are directed by, the density. That's my speculation though.

ahoy··on To motivate people, talk about the context of the work to be done
That is, unfortunately, how businesses are organized under capitalism.
ahoy··on U.S. opens a national security review of TikTok’s acquisition of Musical.ly
I didn't realize we were all on facebook's board of directors.
ahoy··on Dr Sarah E. Hill: ‘A blind spot about how the pill influences women’s brains’
Youre of course right. A slight edit to the headline would make this more inclusive.

"women's minds" => "the mind"

ahoy··on For the first time on record, the 400 wealthiest Americans paid a lower tax rate
> articles about politics that are neutral

That literally isn't a possibility.

ahoy··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
I'm on board with sweeping changes, but most US cities aren't built densely enough to take advantage of public transit even if we do build it.

It's not just a matter of building more transit (which we should be doing!). We have to move people back into urban cores and out of sparsely populated suburbs.

ahoy··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
I don't think you disagree. If new roads make driving more convenient, doesn't it stand to reason that building new roads also increases the number of miles driven?
ahoy··on Meeting online has become the most popular way U.S. couples connect: study
I've been with my partner over 9 years and we aren't married. I'd consider ours a "successful" relationship.
ahoy··on I was skeptical of unions. Then I joined one
>Collective bargaining means, valuing them about the same (a common agreement means the same outcome for all?)

This is a misconception spread by capital to make you think unions are going to hurt you.

The media company I work for recently unionized. I assure you the junior staff still makes less money than the senior staff. What the union bargaining got wasn't flat wages. What it got was a higher wage floor for new hires, better PTO, more flexible working hours, and a consistent yearly raise/compensation schedule, things like that. No senior employee's work is devalued.

The tradeoff isn't between senior and junior workers. It's between workers and owners.

ahoy··on I was skeptical of unions. Then I joined one
No, it isn't true.
ahoy··on 20th anniversary of José Bové’s 'attack' on a McDonald's in rural France
Surely you don't suggest that this is a uniquely french behavior?
ahoy··on Teenage Engineering has won over kids and professionals with a synthesizer
yep
ahoy··on July on course to be hottest month ever, say climate scientists
As it should. My point is that there are also wealthy families(and companies) in NY/Houston/DC/etc that know that climate change will cause wide-scale human suffering but purposefully spread misinformation and sow doubt because addressing that problem would cut into their wealth.
ahoy··on July on course to be hottest month ever, say climate scientists
There are an awful lot of educated people whose livelihoods depends on us not taking those steps. That's why disinformation and denialist propaganda like this study get funded.

Leaving those lies unchallenged would be journalistic malpractice.
