ahbyb··on Sourcehut Q3 2019 Financial Report
Do you have plans to rewrite Sourcehut in a language that doesn't take 250 ms to generate each page? I'm afraid of what performance will look like when you get some serious traffic, and how your costs will scale. You may end up like reddit.

Other than that, great stuff.

ahbyb··on Intel: 10nm Product Era Has Begun, 7nm on Track
>If your workloads are limited by single thread performance you need better software.

Most of the time we don't get to choose which software we run. Hell, most core components of Windows get stuck in a single core still. I'll take single-core performance over multi-core performance any day. Maybe that will change in 10 years, but I live in the present.

>I don't know why the hype train is such a thing for the AMD crowd

Because AMD doesn't deliver constant good results. They just drop a bombshell every 10 years and call it a day.

"carrying heroin in a sock" vs. acting as a courier of heroin and hydromorphone pills, after having been convicted before of forgery for having used fraudulent checks and stolen credit cards.
ahbyb··on Addressing some misconceptions about our plans for improving the security of DNS
I was talking about defaults. Of course you can also change them on Chrome too. But defaults matter because most people stick to them. And the default of Firefox will send navigation history to Cloudflare.
ahbyb··on Addressing some misconceptions about our plans for improving the security of DNS
>The first claim is that Google is going to redirect user DNS traffic to Google's own DNS or another DoH-compliant DNS provider. That is incorrect. Because we believe in user choice and user control, we have no plans to force users to change their DNS provider. [...] We’re simply enabling support in Chrome for secure DoH connections if a user’s DNS provider of choice offers it.

Chrome will use the DoH frontend of the DNS server of the computer it's running on, respecting the user's choice. Instead, the Mozilla Corporation has decided that Firefox will route all DNS requests through CloudFlare regardless of user settings.

ahbyb··on Who does that server really serve? (2010)
Interesting... one does not expect the timestamp to be there!
ahbyb··on Who does that server really serve? (2010)
I suppose these articles aren't timestamped on purpose, but that is really annoying.
ahbyb··on Apple Developer Documentation Is Missing
Which would make sense since 99% of apps probably have fewer than 100 downloads each.

(Yes I know this is not your point, just a little joke)

ahbyb··on The Advertising Industry Has a Problem: People Hate Ads
In my experience the best information is always in websites with no ads. Like personal blogs, old pages, you name it. Seeing ads in a newspaper website? Why would I want to watch ads in exchange for being fed manipulating, half-true information?
ahbyb··on Due to the fires and power outages in California, oreilly.com is unavailable
It doesn't seem unavailable. It's online, innit?
ahbyb··on 900 Children Test Positive for H.I.V. in Pakistani city of Ratodero
That might not be the worst thing that could happen to Pakistan, though.
ahbyb··on Internet Archive Is Offline
Wayback Machine is always very very very very slow, it's usually not offline just very slow.
ahbyb··on Facebook is using the Menlo Park Police Department to reshape the city
I'm not sure what colour your "friends of colour" are, but if we assume black, I'm sure a properly dressed black person (which is what I'd expect from a Facebook employee) won't receive as much scrutiny as one that wears baggy pants.
ahbyb··on Hundreds shot and beaten as Chile takes to the streets
I see. I was suspecting something like this. I hope the government can resist this and democracy is preserved.
ahbyb··on Hundreds shot and beaten as Chile takes to the streets
"over the past decade"... don't they have elections to solve these issues instead of acting like monkeys? Or is this the usual case of a minority making a mess because they don't like what the majority of the country has chosen?
ahbyb··on CS:GO players banned by Google's new chat AI
Probably nothing you can't do with regular expressions.
ahbyb··on Google CEO says company genuinely struggling with employee trust
I am not a very new user, in fact by looking at your profile I have been here for much longer than you.

Older/active users are predominantly left-wing and use their flag power to flag right-wing points of view, because they deem them as trolling (charitable point of view) or because they want to silence them (uncharitable point of view). Then, mods come and ban those who amass many flags because someone who's got many flags is irredeemably a troll.

ahbyb··on Google CEO says company genuinely struggling with employee trust
Forgive me but I don't feel like writing too much about this subject, which is getting pretty old and tiring. So I'll type it here even if I get flagged.

The political compass can be separated in economical and social issues. Economically, HN is right-wing, as you say. It's full of libertarians. But socially, it's strictly left-wing. Things that get you flagged? Men and women are not the same, we should not turn the world around to appease to non-heterosexuals, perhaps people of different races/ethnic backgrounds/religions are fundamentally different (for better or for worse), all humans aren't worth the same, countries should have the right to manage themselves in any way they want without having human rights shoved into them by the west... Stuff like that cannot be discussed here.

And as I said, I don't know if it's a conscious effort by the mods, or those topics only incite flames so they have to be shut down. What I do know is that just yesterday we got https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21365411 on the front page (which is, quite literally, left-wing political propaganda) but something that criticised those points would be flagged in minutes.

ahbyb··on Google CEO says company genuinely struggling with employee trust
I don't know how/why it happened, but most users here are left-wing now. This means that, if you post a right-wing point of view, you are likely to attract lots of responses. Posts that attract lots of responses are always seen as flamebait, and flamebait is flagged. Many flags will get you labelled as a troll and banned.

Whether this is on purpose (a system used by the mods to keep the site left-wing) or not (just a consequence of the times we live in + a desire by the mods not to have flames all day) is another matter.

>The question is, do you want to live in a society where prices are set based on one's genes. I sure don't.

Those genes do clearly make us behave in different ways, so why not?

I'm not a feminist, but it would be fairer for women to pay less for the same insurance since they are less likely to get in trouble with their cars. Why should they pay more?

ahbyb··on No XBL Components Left in Firefox
>And now a major browser's UI is built with web components!

Proud that you need to use your HTML/JS engine to render your UI instead of using faster native code? I mean you have the opportunity of getting rid of XUL and instead you change it... for something similar?

ahbyb··on Facebook crawls links in PDFs you send in Messenger
What if I create a PDF with this content...

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3

and so on, until 10,000,000? Perhaps Facebook starts opening every link using 10,000 parallel threads. Can you really replicate that from your connection at home? Perhaps even the sysadmin of your victim site has whitelisted all Facebook IP addresses so their crawlers get a free ride.

ahbyb··on Facebook crawls links in PDFs you send in Messenger
That's assuming Microsoft didn't do things properly. Who's to say the amount of connections that could be opened, the bandwidth, or the max traffic that could be recv/sent wasn't limited?

Thinking that you can make an HTTP request using this method and that that means you can unleash a DoS is... worth a try, but not something you can take for granted.

"abusive language" is such a generic term.

I remember something like this was possible back in the day with Google Sheets. You could embed a URL as if it was an image in each cell of a sheet and it would make thousands of requests. I don't remember the details.

Most people don't care about this because mobiles for them are, indeed, throwaways. So, according to some, this should be written into law so we all are forced to care.
