ahbyb··on Ring used video captured on Halloween for PR
>People are annoyed that footage from their home was used, without their permission or any payment to them, by Ring for adverts. People are annoyed that footage from their family trick-or-treat session was used, without their permission or any payment to them, by Ring for adverts.

They should have read the terms of service. Really I'm tired of this argument. "X service should not exist because nobody reads the terms of service"? What about the people who read them? Why should they be deprived of using this service?

>People are annoyed that millions of unregistered surveillance cameras are being installed with few protections or oversight. They're realising that creating a panopticon might also need to include some protection for how the data is used.

People should be able to put whatever they want in their lawns.

Anyway I'm sceptical about this being actual footage from Ring; I'd say they recorded it with actors.

Of course Ring is always watching, that's why people buy those. I mean if I was a customer I would be pissed to know they are not watching
ahbyb··on U.S. opens a national security review of TikTok’s acquisition of Musical.ly

I'd rather see nudity censored than criticism of religion, to be honest, so thank the Lord it's not Europe using soft censorship.

I think it's a great and funny publicity stunt, I don't know what exactly I should be mad about? Or the "won't someone think of the children" argument doesn't work both ways?
ahbyb··on U.S. opens a national security review of TikTok’s acquisition of Musical.ly
Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang don't sound very Californian to me.
ahbyb··on Firefox to Discontinue Sideloaded Extensions
If you have to upload your addons to the internet before you can install them (even if it is to have them signed) that's hardly "local".
ahbyb··on Steve Jobs Is Dead
Is that a screenshot from iPhone where it says "5G"? I thought no iPhones supported 5G at all yet. What's going on?
ahbyb··on Firefox to Discontinue Sideloaded Extensions
That doesn't seem to show how to install an XPI file locally? Unless I'm missing something that's some web interface from AMO
ahbyb··on Firefox to Discontinue Sideloaded Extensions
Then it's not your computer. What I meant is "the owner of the computer installs (or uninstalls) mcafee at will".
ahbyb··on Firefox to Discontinue Sideloaded Extensions
It's not like you don't install McAfee on purpose.
ahbyb··on The FBI Is Tracking Our Faces in Secret, and We’re Suing
You don't need javascript to show some paragraphs of text with hyperlinks. You don't even need css. If that does not work, this is not a case of poor design, this is simply absolute crap.
ahbyb··on ‘Sexual’ use of eggplant and peach emojis banned on Facebook, Instagram
Female breasts are a sex organ, male breasts are not.
ahbyb··on NSO hacked WhatsApp to spy on top government officials at U.S. allies
Unless you're arguing that Facebook-owned channels are more prone to security bugs, I don't see how this conversation is useful. Let's not forget that whatsapp is end-to-end encrypted by default; they literally brought end-to-end encryption to the masses.
ahbyb··on Some Blizzard employees are dreading BlizzCon
You're arguing this in a Western, liberal website. You're fighting a losing battle. They know what you mean, they simply disagree.
ahbyb··on Spain will prevent “digital republic” in Catalonia
>A complete list would include the Basques

País Vasco = Basque Region

ahbyb··on Spain will prevent “digital republic” in Catalonia
>and the economic side is more on the "we get +50% of our money out and what comes back cannot even cover the most basic needs"

Then imagine how it is for the poor regions of Spain.

ahbyb··on Spain will prevent “digital republic” in Catalonia
Which strikes me as odd, because I recall there is a European law that says that personal data of European citizens must remain within the EU.
ahbyb··on Spain will prevent “digital republic” in Catalonia
It's something similar to north/south Italy: they are tired of sharing their monies with the poorer regions of Spain, which they regard as lazy and stupid.
ahbyb··on Spain will prevent “digital republic” in Catalonia
Translation: Spain will enforce the law that says that citizen data must be kept in servers in the EU instead of digital havens, which is what the Catalan government is doing.
ahbyb··on CleanFlicks
So it shouldn't be OK for someone not to watch something they don't want to watch? I don't understand or perhaps I'm misreading.
ahbyb··on Twitter to ban political advertising
It does not take a whole lot of courage to give a megaphone to someone who's making you millions.
ahbyb··on Is Stack Exchange in violation of NY labor law by using volunteer moderators?
>I run a forum and there's no shortage of people who would happily volunteer for a mod role.

There's no shortage of people who want to be rulers of a community. Of those, it is always hard to find the ones who are actually fit for that purpose.

ahbyb··on Nokia’s collapse turned a sleepy town in Finland into an internet wonderland
This is unfortunately very common in Nordic countries right now.

If this is not a serious public disorder, you'll tell me what it is.

ahbyb··on Spanish government orders GitHub to take down Tsunami Democràtic repository
Seems like an American point of view to see it like that. The government does not control what the judges rule, that's what it means.
ahbyb··on Notepad++ issues attacked by Chinese commenters
The devs of Notepad++ aligned themselves by naming a release "Free Uyghur" in the same way that a cop puts himself out there by signing up for the force. It's not like they have been gratuitously targeted.

They named a release in a way that they knew would piss off Chinese users. Now Chinese users are pissed off. Shall we say "mission accomplished"?

ahbyb··on Notepad++ issues attacked by Chinese commenters
This might be the equivalent of a street protest. Why is throwing rocks at cops good but writing "fuck you" in an Internet forum not good?
ahbyb··on Notepad++ issues attacked by Chinese commenters
So they should be ostracised for not thinking like the West wants them to think?

My issue with this is that some people think that all online supporters of the Chinese government are paid shills or just bots. It might surprise you to know that there are normal Chinese people, just like you and I, that simply like things are going in China. I see no reason to disrespect or ostracise them for their politics.

90% of 43% turnout = 38% of the population. You lost.
