aharonovich··on Use a Fake Location for Cheap Airfare
I use TunnelBear
aharonovich··on Ello: You are not a product.
Would love an invite, aharonovich(at)gmail, thanks :-)
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Why are SpaceX's smaller space missiles being launched?
Ah, now this makes sense. Should have thought about that... Thanks :)
aharonovich··on Pseudo-satellites: A cheap alternative to satellites is starting to take off
We also lose knowledge as engineers age and die.
aharonovich··on High School Is Killing Creativity
I agree, but do not consider myself knowledgeable enough in the matter to actually think about a solution. Instead I think a lot about hacking this for myself (when I was in high school, back when we used to ride a t-rex to get to school) and for kids that I meet, friends' children etc. The optimal strategy that i've found is to challenge the child until the 7th grade with after curriculum activities, and then at 7th grade to start avoiding school as much as possible while still attending for the social benefits. this can be done by participating in special programs that vary from school to school but common examples are teaching the kid math after school that he may take the final exams by 9th grade and starting a university degree in a high school / university combined program. This way the student can avoid roughly 50% of high school while still getting the social benefits of making friends and getting used to being around people, yet get 50% of his time back so he can invest it in real education.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Do you use Facebooks' new family tagging feature?
They are not reflected. Let's say someone dad's name is David, when he tags @dad the tag would read 'david'.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Do you use Facebooks' new family tagging feature?
For me the benefit is obvious - Since I never call my parents by their names and only address them as dad\mom it's much more natural for me to @dad when I'd like him to see something. In fact, that's how I've stumbled upon this feature. Using FB when very tired and just accidently wrote @dad instead of @<his name>. Indeed it would be awesome if Facebook crowdsourced their road map, that's a great idea.

That bad?
aharonovich··on [dead]
I'd go with "leading a consultancy". It pretty much says it all.
aharonovich··on Bletchley Park – Google Search
It's true, but this sort of "engineering wit" caused me to look into Google to begin with.
aharonovich··on Bletchley Park – Google Search
Oh, I'm not a retail investor :)
aharonovich··on Bletchley Park – Google Search
I know it's silly, but I'm leading a huge purchase of google equity right now because of these things. Maybe I'm naive but I believe this is the trademark of a top engineering company and I have faith that they will deliver on some of their moonshots.
aharonovich··on Don't be a jerk
I wouldn't take it personally. It was kind of you to answer the question, but take into account that while you are (evidently) HN savvy, many are not and perhaps lack the skills to send you a personal note about them having to delete the question quickly.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: How do you transfer money internationally?
I do my best to stick to Paypal, since it has the majority of my international financial history it saves me the trouble of reconciling several accounts. If (when) they support Bitcoin/Ether it will be perfect.
aharonovich··on I'm 28 and frustrated – can I still have programming career?

aharonovich··on I'm 28 and frustrated – can I still have programming career?
Yes, I have some advice, I'll start by telling you what I did. I had my mind set on going into high-tech for the same reasons you've described. I met with a startup that was bootstrapping his BI product at 2008, and convinced them to let me do sales & PS for them - for free, meaning I would only get paid if I sold the product and managed to sell some PS hours. In return they supplied training on their BI tool, naturally I had to learn a whole lot by myself - basic things that were then new for me - DB, sql etc, but I didn't mind since I loved computers since ever. After a few months of not selling almost nothing (wow, great surprise) my funds were running low, but I was already a different person. I knew what is a product, I knew what is a DB and how to connect to it etc, so I've found a junior job at a Qlikview (another BI tool) PS company. I picked up QV very fast and became very good with it, and after one year at the job was already the company's lead on financial BI. After this year I already had the technical expertise to get a job that combined my new career with my old career and became an IT economist, no longer a junior, in charge of migrating the organization's financial systems to SAP and maintaining the existing systems until the change.

My advice - just get in IT. Don't mind starting from the bottom, in the grand scheme of things 2-3 years of reduced salary is nothing. Look for a job in the IT of your field, for example, since I had financial background it was easy for me to get a job in financial BI, but I could get a job in any financial IT system as helpdesk, PS etc. To get this job you might have to get into a course or even learn some new skills at home after work. If you want specific ideas you can write here or email me your experience.

Life is long and careers are very short nowadays. While it's true that a CS degree from IV league school and a hacker career in google is probably quite difficult for you I assure you that for the more common jobs it is much more appreciated by employers that you have the skills to learn new material alone. I am now 33. I've been working in the investment industry since I was 17 and only when I was 28 I've changed carrers - to IT. It was very easy for me since (much like yourself) I loved learning alone and was always fascinated by computers. Last year I've changed careers again - this time to tech investments. If employers won't give you a chance, don't give them the opportunity to decline. Be creative. For example, try getting work as QA in start-ups and then move to junior dev inside the company, or take on web projects for free, bid low on Elance etc.
aharonovich··on Panasonic and Tesla Sign Agreement for the Gigafactory
They plan to have capacity of 35-50 GWh at 2020 [0]. IMO they will not be able to produce so many cars, to use all the battery capacity in Tesla cars they would to make ~0.5 Million cars per year. This means that they do plan to sell the excess capacity.
