aharonovich··on Ask HN: Why can't we talk to each other here?
IMHO if someone hasn't added his contact information in their profile it would be safe to assume that they don't want to be contacted.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: My side project is ramen-profitable. What do I do now?
I'm an affiliate marketer. I would recommend that you either partner with an expert, or do the following yourself (that's what I would do if I was hired to monetize you) 1. Germany is a lean poc. You made your point. Move on to the real market- u.s. 2. Hire a cheap designer from fiverr/similar service. 3. Apply to all major related affiliate programs (eg amazon, cj etc) 4. Start making money. 5. Use profits to: 5.1 improve design 5.2 improve conversion 5.3 improve user value using a/b testing with different programs. 5.4 retarget your visitors with all said programs. If you wish to speak to me further about this I'm at aharonovich@gmail Best of luck
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Am I getting old?
IMHO it doesn't matter which is objectively better, which is more efficient. If people would go ahead and use tablets then so should you, or you risk getting out of touch with your users and general society, much like my grandmother who has a hard time getting to the bank since she doesn't get e-banking and physical banks keep shutting down branches.
aharonovich··on MIT Mathematician confirms: Israeli 10th-grader discovers new geometric theorem
In Israel, first grade is for 6 year olds, getting out of kindergarten and into elementry school, so if you want grade to age conversion just add 6, ie 10th grade = 16 yo
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate your European startup?
Interesting!
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate your European startup?
True. Sadly, that's where I must incorporate.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate your European startup?
AFAIK the extra taxes apply to your country of origin, not to Estonia.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate your European startup?
Yes, Normal corporate tax planning, while maintaining the simplicity of doing business within the EU.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate your European startup?
Why did you change your mind about Lisbon?
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Where would you incorporate your European startup?
thanks!
aharonovich··on Amazon Hires Homeless Workers, and Everyone Ends Up Disappointed
Sadly I think that if a company supplied housing for temp employees the media would shout slavery.
aharonovich··on Amazon Hires Homeless Workers, and Everyone Ends Up Disappointed
Totally. Leave it to socialists to attack someone who had actually tried to help the poor. The worst thing about homelessness is said to be that some people fall into poverty over bad luck, and if they would only get a break they can pull out. So that's what amazon did - have them a brake. Even with a seasonal job, I'm sure some of them pulled themselves out of poverty.
aharonovich··on I thought all anti-vaxxers were idiots. Then I married one
But do you want to live with this person? If I hold an opinion that's so sub optimal and I hold it because of emotional reasons I'd like someone to shake me out of it, not pet me on the head and smile.
aharonovich··on I thought all anti-vaxxers were idiots. Then I married one
Feeding children in a specific way: costly and complicated. Vaccinating your kids: just take them to where you're told. Free and easy. Even a monkey can do it.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Alternative tips for quitting smoking?
Embarressingly enough- "the easy way", e- cigs, declaring it to myself four months ahead of time & lastly doing it on the first day of a two week vacation.
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Why is HN not mobile friendly yet?
there's (at least one) great app.
aharonovich··on Solar City Project To Come Online Just As Subsidies Are Cut
Well, they did publish some guidance that shows they would manage to drive down costs by 2017 to be marginally profitable.
aharonovich··on Show HN: The platform used for the TechCrunch interview with Sam Altman
Cool project, does it support RTL languages like Arabic or Hebrew?
aharonovich··on SolarCity didn’t invent solar panel, but it invented something more important
The amazing part of it imo is that no matter the industry, a high tech company with the high tech standards of IT, customer service and efficiency will win, as long as it completes against classic industrial/commercial companies
aharonovich··on Ask HN: Would you buy Solar Bonds?
I agree, but counting issues (type 424B5) in Solarcity's SEC filings[1] I see >$150m in solar bonds, and that's excluding the $90 mio from SpaceX. I try to understand who is buying them and why, given all the good reasons you've just mentioned.
aharonovich··on Tesla Energy
oh but think how much nicer the cable looks without the bulky box of the transformer.
aharonovich··on Why Energy Storage Is About to Get Big – And Cheap
Wow, this is really a great system. Wish we had that in Israel.
aharonovich··on Why Energy Storage Is About to Get Big – And Cheap
but grid-edge storage does help a bit to resiliency of grid.
aharonovich··on Why Energy Storage Is About to Get Big – And Cheap
So who is covering the cost of transmitting to power from the wind farm to your city and the cost of distributing it all the way to your home?
aharonovich··on Why Energy Storage Is About to Get Big – And Cheap
IMO It only seems that way. They do their best to stay on top of all new technology, but as consumers are used to very high level of service (>99.99%) they can afford few risks if any.
aharonovich··on Why Energy Storage Is About to Get Big – And Cheap
My research has shown that while many utilities have purchased storage (SCE 250 mW in 2014[1]) it's still very experimental and they do it mostly for research purposes or publicity or because the regulator makes them. However, since the electricity business is slow moving, low margin and very capital intensive it's clear why everyone is very interested in any new potentially disruptive technology. Imagine owning a peaker power plant that you've paid for in full using debt and generates a little profit each year under the condition that it can be amortized for 15 more years - if someone built the equivalent of a peaker plant made of batteries, even in 2025, you'd still go under. Scary.

aharonovich··on Why Energy Storage Is About to Get Big – And Cheap
How lucky for me, I've just finished doing the same back of the envelope calculation for using a home storage system that would take advantage of Time-Of-Use rates, my conclusion was opposite - when he is concentrating on the gap between ~34c peak rate to ~15c minimum rate I've chosen to focus on the gap between the minimum rate to the ~19c standard tiered rate. the 3-4 cent difference means that you can only save, at the maximum, 3-4 cents per kwh consumed your storage. And storage is very far from this range. Nonetheless, I'm still very optimistic about other uses of storage and I am confident that I would find the right company to short, maybe a company that builds peaker plants.
aharonovich··on Four&me – Connect with great people and get together for amazing activities
this is a MUCH needed app. well done.
aharonovich··on Rooftop solar is now cheaper than the grid in 42 American cities
No, and there is a financial proof: you can get a PPA deal. If the snow makes the output lower you just don't pay anything and the company losses. So we can assume that either the snow just falls off or that they would come clean it.
aharonovich··on Rooftop solar is now cheaper than the grid in 42 American cities
You do know that PPA rooftop solar is zero $ upfront & cheaper than 'normal' electricity, right? Nothing stopping the poor from getting it. In fact, I would be very surprised to hear that PPA customers average income is lower than in the general population.
