afsina··on New Optimizations Improve Deep Learning Frameworks for CPUs
This seemed like an Intel ad.
afsina··on Derinkuyu: Turkey’s Underground City
Wow. How is your visit is rewarding a political figure? I am sure local people will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
afsina··on Is Trump mulling Peter Thiel for a top intelligence advisory post?
[1] Most libertarians agree with this.

[2] "Enforcement of Multi culturalism" is opposed by most libertarians.

[3] This shows he is supporting conservatives, not really far right.

Perhaps your definition of far right is not what I understand.

afsina··on DuckDuckGo vs Google
Most of those sources are search engines of some web pages, answer pages, cheat sheets and help documents. They even list tiny unit conversation services there. Give me a break.
afsina··on DuckDuckGo vs Google
AFAIK it is the second.
afsina··on A Coca-Cola plant in Mexico uses 1.08M liters of water per day as wells dry up
I think OP may be correct that people do this, but I am not at all convinced with the reasons.
afsina··on A Coca-Cola plant in Mexico uses 1.08M liters of water per day as wells dry up
>The water isn't safe to drink, and Coke can be cheaper than milk or formula, so many moms feed their babies Coke instead [1].

I find your reasons hard to believe and your reference #1 proves nothing. If water is not contaminated chemically, boiling is the solution like millions of people do daily. I also find it hard to believe milk is more expensive than coke as UHT milk is easy to import in large quantities and cheap.(A fast check shows milk is half the price in Mexico, water is even cheaper). Perhaps people do it anyway, but reasons sound dubious to me.

afsina··on Alphabet considers Lyft investment of about $1B
Overpriced is this: I can pay to a pirate taxi service 2-3 times less and he is still fine. For example, Taxi drivers here needs to pay money to medallion owner and prices are determined by their guild and government centrally. There is no competition or any concern of consumer expectations.
afsina··on Alphabet considers Lyft investment of about $1B
I am very supportive of small business. And dislike large corporations. And surely believe that large corporations are behind many regulations that makes small business bankrupt. They buy favors and pass laws favoring their stance. Government offers their service with a fee, they buy it. But, taxi business is by large enter to this territory. Entering business is very hard with historical or meaningless reasons. I do believe there will be independent taxi drivers using intelligent services that behaves differently than Uber. That of course may change when autonomous cars take over.
afsina··on Alphabet considers Lyft investment of about $1B
First, Uber will not be a monopoly, second Taxis are over priced already.
afsina··on Alphabet considers Lyft investment of about $1B
I will say good riddance, and I bet prices will be similar, even lower.

afsina··on Taxi Medallions, Once a Safe Investment, Now Drag Owners into Debt
People in US are doing just fine without special "taxi" training. You think Uber drivers does not know short cuts? Rating system is a far better motivator for drivers.

In Turkey and likely in other countries there are regulations for commercial drivers such as they need special health certificates etc but everybody knows it is turns to be just another paper you can buy. If Uber does not follow the regulations you mention, people has a right to choose anyway. The only regulation necessary is to make it deliberate in the cars. A sign telling "This driver does not have first aid training".

afsina··on A New Way to Learn Economics
They promote "anti government regulation". Otherwise for long therm success, voluntary market regulation by other market entities is almost always necessary.
afsina··on Taxi Medallions, Once a Safe Investment, Now Drag Owners into Debt
Agreed. In Turkey, taxi medallions are part of a terrible system. They are extremely expensive in big cities. In many cases, Taxi drivers do not own them. Different drivers work in two or three shifts and pays a predetermined amount to medallion owner (a hefty sum). Sometimes medallions are rented by a third party and he manages the taxi drivers and pays to the top dude.

Government does not allow Uber like systems. Also Taxis are very expensive especially in smaller cities. And no, many does not behave nicely. They are also reckless in traffic.

So we stuck to this monopoly and nobody questions. Why is driving a Taxi a profession in this age of technology? Anybody with decent driving skills can do this yet Taxi drivers are the first to prevent any competition. This pattern is quite noticeable in many other areas of industry. They make restrictions and regulations with good intentions, later it turns to a monster.

afsina··on NASA's plan to save Earth from a supervolcano
Or, maybe this is just another attempt from NASA to prevent budget cuts. And in a cunning way. Pump fear, look cool, create a long term very expensive very difficult project, keep money coming. IMO, moving money from war machine to risky projects is hardly justified. Both should be gone.
afsina··on Tampa Bay’s coming storm
Thanks for the detailed explanation. But still, the previous commentator's "Florida is just low-tax." does not hold at least percentage wise. However, when I searched the tax ration they say there is a 40% income tax in Switzerland. What is wrong here?
afsina··on Tampa Bay’s coming storm
What are the tax rates in both?
afsina··on Magnitude-8+ Earthquake, 87km SW of Pijijiapan, Mexico
Many people here in Turkey will think solar eclipse triggered this. Strong 1999 earthquake in Turkey also happened just some weeks after the full solar eclipse. I think it is just a coincidence though.

Edit: wording.

...by subsidizing with oil exports. Like Norway.
afsina··on Watsi launches universal health coverage, funded by YC Research
IMO, That's too high for a family with kids.
afsina··on Watsi launches universal health coverage, funded by YC Research
State sponsored health care is very inefficient, coercive, unfair and open to abuse no matter the good intentions. I salute Watsi and YCombinator for making this without direct state support.
afsina··on Central Banks Can’t Ignore the Cryptocurrency Boom
Perhaps easier way is to criminalize using it. So usage will be limited, control and money printing will continue.

afsina··on Google Critic Ousted from Think Tank Funded by the Tech Giant
No, What I said is, monopolies can exist for a short time in a free-market system. But they live much longer in state controlled-restricted markets. And I doubt there is any example in History a real monopoly lived as long as patent expiration time (no, Standard oil was not a monopoly.) even in a "mostly" free market economy. Examine the Phoebus cartel for an example. Patents are indefensible in my eyes after witnessing the damage it gave to the development of human kind (pharmaceuticals, tech, software etc.). Besides, IP rights is only one of state's monopoly generation tools.

Perhaps my wording was not correct. What I mean by "forced redistribution" is getting money from producers by force (via taxation) and distributing it to a arbitrarily selected people. This is required in all forms of Socialism and it violates the rules of free market (capitalism).

afsina··on Google Critic Ousted from Think Tank Funded by the Tech Giant
Free markets allow monopolies. Actually it is the dream of all producers, but in practice they cannot live long. Reason there are monopolies or very high barriers to enter some industries is the state granted rights (eg. IP rights), regulations and restrictions.

Also you are avoiding the actual "social" side of the Socialism. In Socialism, there is always a forced redistribution mechanism in the name of "exploitation of the labor class". Which makes the "free market" impossible.

afsina··on Google Critic Ousted from Think Tank Funded by the Tech Giant
That term is an oxymoron.
afsina··on Susan Fowler files amicus briefs to challenge class action waivers
There is no "we" unless there is unanimous decision. And practically it is not possible for nation states. You may suggest "As a society, majority have to decide.. " if you are a believer of Democracy.

Edit: I know this may sound just technicality, I just dislike use of "we" in politics.

afsina··on Monopoly was invented to demonstrate the evils of capitalism
