aforty··on Poll: What is your level of education?
Dropped our of high school but got my bachelors in comp sci.
aforty··on U.S. FDA to phase out some antibiotic use in animal production
This. Would be nice to have some stats but I suspect you're right.
aforty··on Snapchat's Evan Spiegel: Saying no to $3B, and feeling lucky
A poster child for our 1%.
aforty··on Started a stupid company. Failed.
Ouch, hang in there. Go get a 'real' job until you get back on your feet.
aforty··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
Holy shit that's insane! I would report this pattern first the UPS upper brass and then, promptly, to the better business bureau.
aforty··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
Interesting! I will keep this in mind when I eventually move.

Curious, are there Amazon Lockers near where you live and if so, was there a reason why you chose not to use them?

aforty··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
A doorman can't really help when USPS brings a pick-up slip instead of the actual package.

Also not everyone can afford a building with a doorman. But good for you.

aforty··on Why I Canceled Amazon Prime
I live in Brooklyn too. Not sure if it's a regional thing but lately all packages have been delivered via USPS. I don't currently have the problem that the OP has but that's only because I live in a larger apartment building to which USPS sends a truck with all the packages for the day.

But I can definitely relate. USPS offices are usually in very unfriendly places as far as public transportation goes. Having to travel, wait on line and then carry your package home would be a deal breaker for me as well.

aforty··on Vegetarian/Vegan food finder for London
Love it! I'll use this when I come to London next time!
aforty··on Knockout v3.0.0 released
Great framework but are those all the changes in 3.0.0?
aforty··on DigitalOcean raises $3.2M Seed Round
I know them, great group of guys. Congrats!
aforty··on Ractive.js
Oh how I wish you had written that 6 mons ago. Learned those same lessons in a painfully slow way.

I've been using knockout for the last 3 years, mostly for small projects but the last one has been a big one. Growing pains but its working out great.

Knockout needs more love.

aforty··on The Great Google Goat Rodeo
Don't you know you get down voted for agreeing with the author?
aforty··on Futurama Canceled Again
There's definitely an argument to be made for that but I still loved that show immensely and I'm sad to see it go.
aforty··on PlaceIt by Breezi - Generate Product Screenshots in Realistic Environments
Seems like it's broken at the moment. I'll check in later. Neat idea and execution!
aforty··on Ask HN: As a programmer/developer/engineer, what title do you prefer?
"Being called a programmer narrows my skill set"

This. Also feel the same way about "developer" especially when I see people who only do HTML mockup being called "web developers."

aforty··on Ziptastic: Isn't a zipcode enough?
I love Twitter bootstrap but can people take a few minutes to customize the colors just a bit? Is that too much to ask for?
aforty··on Notch live coding 0x10c
Why do people care about this? I mean, the guy is coding, cool... but what's the big deal? I don't even think anything he has done is particularly great.
aforty··on Poll: What is your current Stack Overflow reputation?
I tried to answer some question once and it told me I needed reputation to submit an answer but it was not at all clear how I could acquire reputation to begin with. While I'm sure there's a relatively simple solution to this, I became frustrated and never looked into it further.
aforty··on Poll: What's Your Most Disliked Programming Language?
Wow... Java is winning! Would never have thought that many peoples hated Java as much as me.
aforty··on Apple Announces Plans to Initiate Dividend and Share Repurchase Program
I'd say that + overall market moving upwards + the anticipation of a stock buyback and/or stock dividend.

I don't think we can attribute all this growth to any one thing.

aforty··on TylerWM - a tiling window manager for OSX
Although more manual, Moom achieves the same effect. Manual means more flexible in this case, for me anyway.
aforty··on Zappos.com customer database compromised
I didn't get this notice so that means my information wasn't compromised? Wouldn't bet on it.
aforty··on Top Developer and Engineering Skills Employers Will Look in 2012
These are trends and while important a bit misleading.

Yes HTML5 has seen 350,000% increase (yes, I typed that correctly) in job postings over the years, but it is still only in 0.3% of all job postings. Meanwhile C# is in ~1.6% and Java in ~3.3% of all postings.

Not saying you shouldn't get some HTML5, MongoDB, Android or iOS knowledge but these are hardly the "most looked for" skills.

aforty··on What Makes Android Revolutionary
Sure, Rubin's definition of open ("mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make") would still apply today without the iPhone but let's be real: Android, without the iPhone, would at best be a Blackberry clone. One could argue the market would have ignored it because it would have offered very little new. It had wide adoption among hardware manufacturers were desperate because they needed to compete against the iPhone. Would the same have been true if they were still competing against Blackberry, a Blackberry clone and whatever Microsoft would eventually come out with?

Android is what it is today because of Apple and the iPhone.

aforty··on Show HN: My Zappos/Twilio hackathon entry
Ok, this is awesome!
aforty··on The Trouble with Bright Kids
Wow... That hit close to home for me. I've always felt this way and I'm afraid to fail. I overachieve always to try overcompensate for the feeling that if I fail then I'm not smart enough.

I never overachieved in school, I think I was mostly bored but was always told I was "smart" and "bright." Jebus, that really hit a nerve.

aforty··on Simple but Interesting Features of VS2010 and C# 4.0
A few of those features are ones that VB.NET developers have long been enjoying and yet VB.NET is still looked down upon when functionally it and C# have been equal for years.

Yes I'm a little bitter because I had to learn the disgustingly ugly syntax that is C# when I recently switched jobs.

aforty··on Helveticards - Minimalist Typography Cards for the Typophile, Gambler
They are on sale for $7.50 on Fab, until they were sold out that is. Says "Restocking Soon" and when they do, I'm buying two.

aforty··on End the Office? Students Want Right to Work From Home
Looks like the OP is just trying to plug his "blog." Very lame.
