aforty··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
I think Meta would love nothing more than to throw a very large wrench into the works of OpenAI/Anthropic. Open models could mean one or both go bankrupt which is good for them.

Nvidia sells the hardware.

Microsoft sells the hosting.

aforty··on An interview with an Apple emoji designer
So cool to get the background story on this. I remember adding the Japanese keyboard here in the US just so I could get access to emojis.
aforty··on Layoffs at Block
Because it will go out today anyway on the investor call or later via leak so might as well get ahead of it.
aforty··on Why Real Life is better than IRC (2000)
Ah damn this brings back memories… shout out if you were on #windows98, #windows2000 or #windowsxp on EFnet circa 97-01.
aforty··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
Has OP tried emailing Tim Cook directly and pleading his case?
aforty··on Multiple Digital Ocean services down
Cloudflare outage.
aforty··on Steam Machine
Half-Life 3 when?
aforty··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
Really cool.

Only bug I noticed was that the command line output doesn’t scroll. This was on my iPhone with the keyboard up as I was typing commands and press return.

aforty··on CPU-X: CPU-Z for Linux
Nice but does it really have to look like the Windows version? Can’t we imagine and have better things?
aforty··on Era of U.S. dollar may be winding down
It matters because it’s the main reason why the US is able to borrow money so cheaply and why the US doesn’t get a junk bond rating.
aforty··on Windows 2000 Server named peak Microsoft
I loved Windows 2000 so much. I was a beta tester back then and they sent me a copy in the end. Was very cool for me as a broke high school student.
aforty··on Orbit by Mozilla
All this costs money though and the eventual question is if you aren’t paying for it then who is?
aforty··on D-Link says it won't patch 60k older modems
Something that supports OpenWRT.
aforty··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
We have this at our company too. I guess it’s useful but doesn’t really have a whole lot of time.
aforty··on Founder Mode
I guess what this blog post is about is that it only works if you have the ability to instinctively tell who those people are. Steve did and I know a few other people personally who do but I sure as hell don’t.
aforty··on Microsoft blocks Windows 11 workaround that enabled local accounts
So that means they fixed SMB folder shares with Microsoft accounts, right?
aforty··on California could ban Clear, which lets travelers skip TSA lines
Global Entry is only when you come into the country and have to go through immigration. It does nothing for when you have to board a plane.
aforty··on Why does an extraneous build step make my Zig app 10x faster?
There is general wisdom about bash pipelines here that I think most people will miss simply because of the title. Interesting though, my mental model of bash piping was wrong too.
aforty··on New exoplanets identified that could potentially harbor life
Well I think the problem is with how to interpret that word. The potential is there because these exoplanets are in the habitable zone near their respective stars. That’s the headline and the story: these planets could be habitable and neither the title or article make any claims that they could indeed have any life on them.
aforty··on New exoplanets identified that could potentially harbor life
What exactly is unclear about the title?

“New exoplanets identified that could potentially harbor life”

The word “potentially” setup my expectations perfectly.

aforty··on Apple Vision Pro available for pre-order
I remember people mocking it as the iPhone MaxiPad.
aforty··on Linux 6.8 Network Optimizations Can Boost TCP Performance by ~40%
Orinoco was my first experience with WiFi back in my college days. I remember it being incredibly bad, with buggy drivers, and an overall horrendous experience. That was with Windows of course.
aforty··on Beeper vs. Apple battle intensifies: Lawmakers demand DOJ investigation
So Beeper is piggybacking off Apple’s servers that facilitate iMessages and is charging $1.99 per month to users and they thought Apple would be okay with this?
aforty··on YouTube wants to get you watching more news from 'authoritative sources'
Unrolling Adblock detection? I finally caved and got YouTube premium but I’m still on the free trial.
aforty··on California governor vetoes bill that would have set a $35 cap for insulin
Agreed, there is no excuse to veto this just because some future project could potentially alleviate it later. Bring relief now.
aforty··on Austria rail operator OeBB unveils new night trains
Eurail is such a mess. I dealt with it and figured out all the reservations this past summer but it definitely wasn’t easy. Lots of work to be done on their end to improve that experience.
aforty··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form
You want people to not register and let the city know that they are residing there?
aforty··on When should you use the IN instead of the OR operator in Postgres?
When should you use IN instead of the OR operator?

Tl;dr;

Always.

aforty··on Why can’t you just roll back from a bad macOS update?
Do bad macOS upgrades even happen that often? Been using macOS full time since about 2007 and I can’t ever recall having a bad OS upgrade. I usually go entire hardware cycles without ever having to fresh install the OS.
aforty··on Machine Unlearning Challenge
Please don’t do free work for google. If you have a solution for this then you have lots of options.
