afhsfsfdsss88··on This girl in SF stole my MacBook Air
I'm 35 years old and can never remember the world being different that 'if you leave something out, it will get stolen'.

But still, somehow, there is a subset of commentators in this thread that aren't aware that it only takes ONE dishonest person to jack your shit.

In a coffee shop with 20 people that is 5% of the population. Almost 3% of this country's population is under correctional supervision at any given time. The odds are not in your favor. Carry a backpack for your stuff and take it with you to the bathroom. If you lose your seat it is a small price to pay for something that doesn't belong to you anyway.

As a hacker...Cool!

As a driver who will have to occupy space around people playing with this while driving...F#&*!

afhsfsfdsss88··on Show HN: InstaMotor – Taking the pain out of selling your car
Most dealer trade offers are so low because they don't even keep your car on the lot, they sell it at auction...at wholesale prices.

That is a lot different than individual sales...which is how this service sells your car. So yeah, you get a better price for your car, but the service still eats a good chunk of the sale price difference between dealer-trade and individual sale.

And "all the paperwork" amounts to downloading a bill of sale form and title transfer online with the DMV. It's not rocket science, nor time consuming. Certainly not worth hundreds of dollars.

afhsfsfdsss88··on WinJS: the Windows Library for JavaScript
Well they are having their annual dev conference right now so you know people are thinking about Microsoft stuff.
afhsfsfdsss88··on Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
Leave it to Microsoft to do the right thing once it has exhausted all other alternatives.
afhsfsfdsss88··on Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8.1 with personal assistant Cortana
How cool would a partially-intelligent virtual secretary be?

We could all focus more on the work and let VS handle the scheduling and minutiae according to our priorities.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Shutting down Ubuntu One file services
I imagine this service had a low adoption rate and is costing Canonical money at a time when Mark is putting all his eggs in the phone/pc convergence basket.
afhsfsfdsss88··on Windows 7 outgains Windows 8 in market share again, Windows XP still above 27%
My conclusion does not stem from articles. It comes from actually using it next to 7, doing the same user and admin tasks I usually do. Without third party software to reign-in Metro it dominates and cripples the experience for a PC use case.

The ONLY thing I wish 7 could steal from 8 is the task manager...

afhsfsfdsss88··on Windows 7 outgains Windows 8 in market share again, Windows XP still above 27%
If you are talking about built-in Defender being the tipping point to compel you to move to Windows 8 from Windows 7...

That is a non-reason, reason. MSE is 100% free and the same damn thing. The phishing filters and other BS is part of IE, which is also present in Windows 7, not Windows 8 specific. The ASLR, et al are in both versions.

There is really nothing tangible which compels an informed PC user to 'upgrade' to Windows 8 from Windows 7.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Microsoft Azure: Cutting prices on compute and storage
It would just feel so dirty running a *nix vm on a Windows Server host...DIRTY.
afhsfsfdsss88··on Is Google overreaching by forcing me to use TLS?
Google and others[Telecoms] are in positions to collect rents on your PI from third parties and G.O.'s. When they[Google] recently learned that the NSA had tapped their unencrypted fiber lines between data centers, they were pissed.

Not because they give a fraction of a shit about you, but because the NSA was stealing their product.

Now they encrypt everything with [very strong] SSL to force everyone to ask/pay for their info.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Amazon WorkSpaces
So the access providers will change their behavior on the basis of your serious doubt?

Will they add new infrastructure and absorb that cost without price increases?

Netflix's issues with ISPs is actually a counter example to my position?

As time goes on, we'll use less data rather than more?

Video[GUIs are video] require a lot of transfers even when you have good connections/protocols. I do remote work[a lot] and I have a typical uplink and it stinks. I use CLI/SSHFS as much as possible to avoid lags and it is still laborious.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Amazon WorkSpaces
The experience is laggy, as the top reply suggests. Your users which aren't doing much[should they even have their own box anyway? (No)] won't notice, but people who actually use the box[I was a quant in a former life] will hate you for it.

Dual monitors are also somewhat common nowadays[vital for actual productivity], how the heck is that gonna do over Comcast lines?

When the day comes[never] that we have ubiquitous/cheap bandwith, this idea is nearly practical. Until then it is DOA for "real work".

afhsfsfdsss88··on Amazon WorkSpaces
The network is what kills this idea before it leaves the womb.

Everyday ISPs/Content Providers are constricting the pipes more and more.

All the physical equipment and meatspace savings from this will vanish[shift rather] and the network costs will take their place.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Steve Jobs's response after getting a Google employee fired.
The sociopathic CEO stereotype is affirmed once again.

I look forward to the coming Apple/Google/XXXX apologists vs. Lucid observer comment war.

NVRAM can be overwritten with a factory fresh BIOS image....
afhsfsfdsss88··on You’re in the front of a Linux computer, you need a root access. What do you do?
This is what came to me first. I have unrestricted physical access?

I probably own the machine. If the data on the storage is not encrypted, I own that too.

If I don't want to disassemble anything, I just plug in a liveUSB and it's all mine.

If the BIOS has USB/CD boot disabled? I pull the CMOS battery.

If that fails? The google probably knows the BIOS reset sequence for your board and soon so will I.

Physical security is important too and FDE is not optional. [Even if you have nothing to hide]

afhsfsfdsss88··on It Is Time For Basic Income
I want to live in a society of people who are working together to make human existence meaningful. What I don't want is the pseudo-free market designed to further despotism and self-interested behavior which we have today.

That said, I'm not for giving someone food, shelter, water, and health care for falling out of a uterus. You have to contribute in some measurable way. Also I believe that we should provide, specifically these things...NOT currency/income.

I've seen too many examples of people having children for well-fare checks.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Windows XP Will Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
People can still keep using XP for as long as they want as long as they keep the machine physically disconnected from the internet!

The big risk is remote exploitation[most of the time].

afhsfsfdsss88··on Drone Flies Into an Active Volcano [video]
From a hacker's perspective, this is very want.
afhsfsfdsss88··on SR-72
I am genuinely curious. Didn't satellites and drones make this obsolete as a concept?
afhsfsfdsss88··on Critical crypto bug leaves Linux, hundreds of apps open to eavesdropping
Can we all finally accept the fact that what is most needed now is not a new whizbang but a comprehensive review of all of the core pieces of software that we depend on as a base for making new whizbangs?

How many critical and ancient bugs still remain undiscovered?

Everyday there is a new Telegram, Cryptocat, etc. all presumably being constructed on top of insecure libraries. What progress can we make with such shaky foundations?

There has been word that the Linux kernel devs are considering slowing new feature adoption for a time while focusing on bug discovery and elimination.

PLEASE, EVERYONE ELSE CONSIDER DOING THE SAME.

afhsfsfdsss88··on Inside DuckDuckGo, Google's Tiniest, Fiercest Competitor
Facebook can only grow ad revenue by purchasing it's competitors[who ironically swore to never be Facebook] now. WhatsApp has a large pile of users to make money from before they jump ship after Facebook is done alienating them all.
afhsfsfdsss88··on Inside DuckDuckGo, Google's Tiniest, Fiercest Competitor
The bump was just a representation of what is sure to be a momentary[relatively] state change in the finite state paranoia machine of a few nearly self-aware 'puter users.

The less self-aware majority still have nothing to hide, and the other side is using Google via proxy.

afhsfsfdsss88··on If You Used TorMail, the FBI Has Your Inbox
Seize it all now and justify it[or not] later. Makes sense. Maybe we should all just go to jail now and wait to see if the government finds a 'lawful' reason later for us to be there.

"Strength through unity. Unity through faith."

afhsfsfdsss88··on Why is the American dream dead in the south?
The American Dream is a logical fallacy. It has but only outcome which is self-destruction. How can the normal distribution exist without mediocrity and poverty?

What's truly disturbing how conservative politics can flourish so predominantly amongst the least likely to benefit from them[the south].
