aerojoe23··on Ask HN: Anyone else depressed by the relentless monetization and spying?
Sadly you'll have to checkout of more than just "online" life if you want to avoid "corporations trying to watch and make money from everything we do."

Newer model car's track your driving, and most manufactures sell it to insurance companies. I'm not sure I read it anywhere but I bet they sell your location data as well and not just driving habits.

For the longest time stores have loyalty discount programs to track your purchasing behavior.

The cellphone in your pocket...

aerojoe23··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
You forgot the advice of "don't run outside from a building." In the US, most buildings are going to be fine structurally; however, the facade of the building or glass, etc., may fall off.

In other parts of the world, it'll depend on the local building codes and their enforcement.

aerojoe23··on Ask HN: Does procrastination advice help you?
Hm, very little to go off here. If you can see problem with your behavior, and it sounds like you can't fix it, you should seek out real help.

A post on hacker news doesn't seem the place for it. There are probably better support groups/forums to ask in.

There are probably many questions to answer that would help you determine what it is. A few that come to mind:

  * Is this new or have you always struggled with procrastination?
  * Do you have (or have you had) other symptoms of ADHD?
  * How was/is school?
  * Do you have some subjects you thrive in and some you fail at, and nothing between?
  * Have you started a new job or role at work?
  * Do you like it?
  * Any other major life events? Fired, kid on the way, death in the family, my friend on discord stopped talking to me.
  * Does the procrastination apply to almost everything?
  * Are you doing something really hard, succeeding at that and can't make yourself do other hard things?
  * Are you saturating your brain scrolling on the internet and it doesn't have room for anything else?
aerojoe23··on Why are you so sure I'll lose?
There is competitive rock climbing. Rock climbing isn't all about physical strength, you have to pick your route. Eventually some military robot company will want to prove that its combat bot can out perform humans on any terrain. And we'll see best humans vs matches that can match and a few years later beat their performance.

Of course the professional competitors don't have to worry about competing against a human that's cheating using a robot; the exoskeleton would be obvious.

But it isn't unimaginable that, in some distant future, nanobots could be inject to infiltrate our muscles and tendons, and then assemble in to fibers that would assimilate with them and look normal from the outside. Competitions are won by incredibly small percentages.

aerojoe23··on Ask HN: Best practices for safeguarding master password in organization?
Good point about Bitwarden, and the more we can convert the better. I think we can catch more fly's with honey than vinegar.

What do you think about trying something like, "Good points about using a password manager. I think Bitwarden is better than 1password becuase it: is open source, it can be self hosted, and you could switch to a fork if they get shady."

Because you wouldn't be implicitly calling them ignorant this way, they're more likely to hear your message.

aerojoe23··on I Came Out as Intersex in Front of the Texas Legislature
Even if it is doubled or quadrupled, does it matter? If just 0.05% of the us pop is intersex I think her argument is completely valid.

I know you didn't say, "Well because they're so much less of them we don't have to protect their rights." But why say that numbers too big? What's the point? Are you trying to discredit the speaker?

Whether or not that is your intent it does seem to be.

Propaganda isn't to convince the critical it is to give the morally corrupt an excuse not to think.

aerojoe23··on Zoom Can Spy on Your Calls and Use the Conversation to Train AI
The point is they still could. As in the terms as written, after the push back, would allow it, but you have their word they're not going to.
aerojoe23··on [dead]
It didn't load for me.
aerojoe23··on Antarctica gained 600 Gt of ice during '09-'19 vs. a prediction of a 20k Gt loss
The ice shelves, not all of Antarctica, gained ice. I guess you could read the HN title and think, "see Antarctica must not be getting warmer if it gained ice." Where the shelves could have gained from the glaciers flowing faster off the land, and amount of ice could still have gone down.
aerojoe23··on Homesepot $44K pre-fab house
"... you'll need to complete ... such as doors, windows, electrical, plumbing and finishes."

Lol

aerojoe23··on Robotic arm made out of glass
Yeah, as someone who follows her and thinks she's a good role model for my kid, and having enjoyed the video the day it came out; it doesn't really feel like it needs to be in this space.

An industrial robotic arm made for chemical processing? Now that belongs here.

aerojoe23··on Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud (2021) [video]
Fire/ambulance/police are supposed to be exceptionally loud so they can get drivers attention and then they can get through. (I expect you know this already, but I'm making sure we're all on the same page.)

Over time cabins in vehicles have gotten more isolated with better sound systems. Outside has gotten generally louder. Both of these things mean the emergency sirens need to be even louder for it to get a drivers attention.

I'm not sure if it is because drivers don't hear/see them or if they just don't care anymore, but almost every time I see a firetruck with it's lights and sirens on lately, I see it have to come to a stop and wait, get on the even louder horn, before drivers start getting out of its way. This isn't down the whole length of the street or anything, just once or twice before it drives out of my view (several blocks). I don't think I ever saw in person this before 10 years ago.

aerojoe23··on Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud (2021) [video]
As I've already gone down the urbanest/transportation rabbit hole and have watch every Not Just Bikes video and other stuff in that space, I have a different perspective than you. I do think I would have shared some of your views a few years ago.

We don't need to come up with solutions. Countries around the world have already. Some of the larger cities in the USA have started making these changes and seeing results.

The solutions don't need to be comprehensive. While an accepted comprehensive plan maybe nice it does put all the planning up front and makes the projects take a very long time. Doing small things that push people to take other transport options doesn't need to take forever. As many cities demonstrated during the pandemic.

In the USA I think the biggest issue will be political will. But the one thing I'd like to see take off is cities removing parking minimums for new businesses or construction. The minimums were arbitrarily set and stop people from building small businesses. The parking minimums spread things out and drive the need to do something other than walk. Strong Towns has a video on it that does a better job than I can.

In short I believe comprehensive guide to being to reduce cars in cities exist at this point.

aerojoe23··on Porsche’s e-fuel burns just like the real thing
It isn't one person chasing two rabbits... This metaphor... It would be like a team of people, who have to work in the dark, trying to get food.

No one knows what their chasing, because they can't see it. Somethings are too fast but they will not know until they try.

There may not be enough lithium to power everything. Batteries may never be light enough for aviation.

aerojoe23··on Mexico’s subway drivers depend on WhatsApp to keep the trains running
It sounds like malicious (but not really) compliance would quickly get this solved.

This would go something like an open letter to management and the public.

"Dear metro users and management,

On X date we will compile with the rules. We'll all stop using our phones. If our radios aren't working we're required to run the trains even slower to maintain safety. (Hopefully that's actually a rule.)

We understand this will effectively shutdown the metro, but it needs funding to operate safely. We cannot in good conscious continue endangering the lives of our passengers and ourselves."

The public will demand funding.

aerojoe23··on Carta lays off 10% of the workforce
What about "We have the money to pay you but we don't want to anymore"?

No idea about this case. But often it seems they're cutting cost because they think they can, not because they have to.

aerojoe23··on PFC bans are going to change waterproof garments
Sadly it seems to be everywhere. It even lines the inside of microwave popcorn bags. It also lines the inside of disposable fast food containers very often. I haven't watched the movie you mentioned so I don't know if you know this stuff already.
aerojoe23··on America’s School Districts Are Too Big
The following is satire.

Tax revenue would get redistributed on a per car basis.

The real difference is the level of driver engagement and support, of which roads get maintenance.

Road districts want to retain good vehicles & drivers for the same reasons those people want to leave.

Rich drivers are dragged down by poor drivers, but poor drivers are dragged up by good drivers.

There is clearly a winner and loser to the arrangement, but it isn't because the road gets less tax revenue per car.

aerojoe23··on Alcohol death toll is growing, US Government reports say
I wonder if there could be a stand in beverage for crap like this. With the right color and frothy bubbles. Idk sparkling apple juice?
aerojoe23··on Natural gas is a fuel of the future
I thought H2 under pressure still embrittled metal. But it isn't an area I study, I'd like to read more about it.
aerojoe23··on Excess Death Rates for Republicans and Democrats During the Covid-19 Pandemic
I'm sure this was intended sarcastically. On the surface it would seem that wearing a mask alone in a car isn't going to help you at all, and while you're alone in your car it doesn't but there are scientific reasons it could have been logical to do so. Once you've used your mask you're supposed to throw it away, because there is potentially virus on the outside of it. You are even supposed avoid touching the outside of the mask when you take it off. The other reason that comes to mind is, it could just help the remember to have it on when they go from place to place.
aerojoe23··on Association between meatless diet and depressive episodes
I had a similar thought. Also I think a vegetarian is more likely to understand humanity's impact on the world, and just how helpless we seem to be to stop a negative impact that takes coordinated effort.

Though the ozone is getting better.

aerojoe23··on [dead]
I think the link is much more general. Take any act that today isn't a crime, for instance drinking alcohol, and at some point the government could decide it is against the law.

When thinking about this, try to pick an act you enjoy. For instance, practicing as a software engineer with out a license? I know it isn't a thing today, but as more software mistakes are blamed for more deaths it could happen.

Her argument is that having strong rights to encryption will enable us to continue to do these acts, write software w/o license, drink alcohol, have abortions, and be Jewish (see WWII), once they're no longer allowed.

She then argued that we should stop treating the US government as the good guys (by default) in conversations about encryption.

Encryption rights becomes another front in the war over any of these other rights.

aerojoe23··on Tell HN: Recruiters asking for current salary may respectfully fuck off
Range is an interesting thing to me. If given a range without information about how a person is placed high or low in that range couldn't they just bait you and always offer the low end.
aerojoe23··on The Hacker's Diet
I agree with you. I think the book is from January, 1991 so I don't think we can blame the author much as it wasn't as widely known. (I think)

I read the whole thing a while ago. To your point he wants you to weigh yourself every day and then take the weighted running average, while this works well for me when I want to diet, it would be a good way to get most people to have a disorder.

aerojoe23··on Against Pair Programming
As an industry we seem to think hard and make proclamations about programing. Where we should be thinking hard and making hypothesis and testing them.

Turns out some people have been doing this and some people put it into a nice book. They conducted systematic reviews of the literature around many software development questions.

The book (I know about anyway) is:

Making Software: What Really Works, and Why We Believe It

and Chapter 17 address pair programing.

It has been a while since I read it, and it is a little thick to jump in and read it to make sure I'm 100% accurate ATM. But the summary I took away for my work environment is that, you get the same productivity with 2 devs working by themselves vs 1 pair, with a lower defect rate. I'd like to quote things directly but I'm not investing that much time right now.

Pair programing IMHO is skill that needs to be learned, and it is a different skill depending on the type of pair you have at the time and what you're trying to do

aerojoe23··on Ask HN: How do you manage your companies knowledge base?
I like having a section in a project document titled approaches tried and why we're not doing that. It sounds like this maybe whole projects/products that have died. Maybe large titles that say canceled, discontinued, or whatever.

On the other hand if you have good version control over the wiki, and a way to search the version history as well, kill the zombies.

Just like killing zombies in your code, killing zombies in documentation sounds good. https://www.bitnative.com/2012/10/22/kill-the-zombies-in-you...

aerojoe23··on Why Not ZFS (2021)
Watched the video where Linus talks about it. Apparently they store all of the footage as a nice to have, and to have a use case to make the large storage content around.

All that to say yes they lost all that data, no it wasn't backed up. Not critical to the business.

aerojoe23··on Sweden clears snow-covered walkways before roads (2018)
Nice point. Made me think about people who have a choice to drive or walk. If the sidewalks aren't cleared they may choose to drive. This could lead to congestion for drivers. It could even be that people who can only drive benefit more when the sidewalks are cleared first.

Proving that ...
